In the very near future, the fate of President Obama’s healthcare bill will be determined by the U.S. Congress. And the issue of abortion could determine whether or not the bill passes.
In November, Congressman Bart Stupak got an amendment added to the House healthcare bill that barred federal funds from being used for abortion. In response to this action, 64 pro-life Democrats voted for the final bill who, without that language, otherwise would have voted against the overall measure. Then, the Senate followed suit and inserted language that, while not exactly the same as Stupak’s, was acceptable to a number of pro-life Democratic Senators.
On the Sunday talk shows, however, both sides of the issue were debating whether the final healthcare bill contains language that would allow people receiving government subsidized healthcare to obtain an abortion.
For example, this morning, Rep. Jason Altmire said that there is a block of Democrats who voted for the Stupak amendment who now say they will not vote for the final bill unless they tighten the abortion language that’s in the Senate bill. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman, Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.) said that the Democrats were continuing to work on Stupak.
This one is going to come down to the wire…

Some should amend that amendment to provide a lump-sum payment to the woman denied an abortion, the amount being equal to the cost of raising the child to adulthood– $280,000, college not included. I think we’d see the so-called “pro-life” amendment eliminated from the bill pretty quickly.

I absolutely agree with Senator Stupak. Abortions can not and should not be funded with tax dollars. It is just not acceptable. If that happens many women will relay on that as a fall on method if they get an unwanted pregnancy. Women should the have the right to choose but at their own expense.

Thanks, “Anonymous.” A lot of people in this country agree with you, that it’s okay to have legal abortion but they dont want their tax dollars used to pay for them. What bothers me, however, is that we pay for Viagra prescriptions. Also, if a woman is on Medicaid and becomes pregnant, if we paid for it she could go to the clinic right away. If we dont, that means she has to struggle to find the $400 or so. That could take weeks and could result in a late term abortion. Of course, we all want the abortions to be earlier in the pregnancy if possible.

Anonymous, I’d appreciate seeing where your balance point is between caring about fetal life and caring for that same life once it’s developed to the point where you could take responsibility for it.
The reason I’m curious is I have a hard time understanding why “pro-lifers” don’t have a higher rate of adoption than the average population, nor a better record for caring for children not of their social class, family circle or church. It makes me think that maybe they are focused so much on the “unborn child” that it actually interferes with their ability to see children in need and even in pain.
So, could you tell me: 1) What percentage of your gross annual income goes for direct support of any of those children? 2) How many unpaid hours a year you freely spend working one on one with them as a Big Brother or Sister, guardian ad litem, public school classroom volunteer, judicial juvenile rehabilitation worker, Parent-Child Center staffer or social services volunteer?
If you don’t reply, it’s just going to make it even harder for me to see where you’re coming from. Thanks!
By the way, you can link to my video of a whole demonstration that did almost none of that– except for the rich guy…

I think “anonymous” up top is actually pro-choice. He just doesn’t think that taxpayers dollars should be used for abortions. Every poll taken on that issue shows a clear majority against using tax dollars for abortions.

Pat, I’ve changed my “name” so you can link to The Baby Store to find out why I assume “Anonymous” is a so-called “pro-lifer.”
“Women should have the right to choose but at their own expense” is in the company of other possibly well-meant but flawed opinions such as, “We seniors oppose using taxpayers’ money for other people’s health care,” or, “Why should my tax dollars go for some kid’s breakfast at school?” Superficially sensible, they are extremely flawed– Medicare and school performance statistics show why (I’m not going into detail.
So it is with abortion. The Baby Store (I compare it with the Abortion Store so beloved of the dysfunctional 12-steppers) shows what statistically will happen to every born baby (“statistically” means if it doesn’t happen to your kid, it’s sooner or later going to happen to someone else’s).
All but two of these horrible outcomes are primarily the result of parental incapacity in one form or another.
So, when a woman feels that she should have an abortion because she has reached the limit of her care for children, she deserves that help– and it is in society’s interest to support her in her decision. When society does not, bad things happen– not only to the children themselves, but often to society in the life of the adult. For example, 95% of the 19-25 male prison population were low birthweight babies (that’s on another page, there).
And sometimes the really bad stuff makes the news: 600 women a year kill their baby while in the grip of post-partum psychosis. Or women like Susan Smith kill their children for love, or like Andrea Yates drown them because nobody notices Mummy is insane.
But most of the time you just have an overstressed mom who projects all her anger onto one of her children, who then grows up learning the role of the “problem child,” who usually becomes the “problem adult.”
In my business, the slogan is, “You can’t take care of the child if you don’t take care of the mom.” Empower the woman to be the caregiver she wants to be, and she will be the better mom she wants to be. For this reason, it is good policy to use taxpayer money to fund abortion.
If “Anonymous” is not a so-called “pro-lifer,” then at the very least his statement shows how well the movement has demonized the word, “abortion.” Take your pick. I haven’t heard back from him yet.
