Fear.
The great motivator.
A few days ago, I received an “alert” from a national pro-choice organization asking me to send them money to help protect some abortion clinics in New Mexico. It seems that the powerful, anti-abortion group known as Operation Rescue is holding a series of protests against abortion providers in that area and this pro-choice group was concerned that this would “incite violence.”
Okay, I will admit that anything could happen. Yes, someone could go nuts, start shooting, run into the abortion facility, accost a woman seeking an abortion. Shit happens and you can’t control everyone out there. And I certainly appreciate the desire of this pro-choice group to protect the clinics but let’s get real here. (I always feel like I’m saying “let’s get real” in these blogs).
First of all, what can this abortion rights group do to stop this possible “violence?” If I contributed one million dollars to them right now, just sat down and wrote a check and couriered it over to them, what would they do with it to protect the clinics? I guess they could buy some bullet proof vests for the workers, but the would-be murderers now know to aim at the head. They could pay for some more rent-a-cops, but will that really help? I mean, c’mon folks, what do you need money for?
Second, this abortion rights group is giving Operation Rescue a lot more credit than they deserve. In its hey-day, Operation Rescue was a force to be reckoned with. They got thousands of protestors to surround Doctor George Tiller’s clinic in the early 1990’s. They could get hundreds of people at a moment’s notice to block access to abortion clinics. They were all over the national news and they literally struck fear in the hearts of abortion clinic workers and owners.
Then, the Congress passed a federal law protecting the clinics, the bullets started flying giving Operation Rescue and other anti- abortion groups a bad name, OR started broadening their agenda to include things like opposition to gay rights. As a result, their movement, and particularly the organization, started dying. I do believe that Operation Rescue is still headed by Mr. Flip Benham, who is based in Charlotte, North Carolina and, yes, he still causes problems for one clinic down there every Saturday. But Operation Rescue is nothing like it used to be. I mean, it’s a joke.
So, I imagine that Flip put out his press release recently, saying that they’re going to New Mexico to do something exciting but I will tell you that they will not get a lot of people to attend the event and they’ll just gather around the clinic, sing songs and pray most of the time. And, I would add, they have a constitutional right to do just that.
Meanwhile, however, the pro-choice groups, no doubt hurting for money because we have a pro-choice President and everyone believes abortion is safe for the future, are using the specter of “violence” to fatten up their coffers.
Just frighten people and they’ll respond. George Bush taught us that lesson well.

LET’S GET REAL!!!!
Your phrase could not be more appropriate for this post Pat.
That is something that I really think about, they ask for money so they can provide what? Security? Police enforcement?
I don’t think they can do much honestly, because if we think for a moment here we know for sure that any security in this world won’t be able to protect any of this doctors because they don’t know in the first place where the bullet will come from!
We are in 2010… XXI century and what amazes me more is to see that stupid people still live in the 1960’s with a mentality that is hypocritical.
Abortion is a very complex subject because each and every one of us knows what is our own situation so NOBODY can really give a real opinion about it.
I will repeat myself, I am either pro-life or pro-choice, and there is a fence here that from time to time I feel like more towards pro-life… but I did learn in this life that pointing my finger won’t do any good and getting violent will even less…
The doctor who practice abortion will die because a stupid non-thinking person think that he is doing this for a cause, a worker of the same abortion clinic feels afraid of going to work because she might be the next target but at the same time she needs that work for surviving… maybe she doesn’t even agree with that, but like all of us she needs to survive and provide for the family right!!!
I said this before and I will repeat myself over and over on this, pro-life people, you don’t agree with abortion, OK, you want to do or participate of a protest, OK… but PLEASE do not end your life just because some stupid non-sense person told you to kill somebody… It is just like those dumb that send people to the war, but they are safe at home right!!!!
Anyways, hopefully one day people will realize that being pro-life or pro-choice is only a matter of a personal opinion…

I work for a major pro-choice organization and I dont know who this Pat Richards is, but I find her comments insulting. Operation Rescue is a terrorist organization that has been associated with so many violent acts in the past. They have blocked clinics, terrorized abortion clinic owners and engaged in all kinds of shennanigans. My organization will raise money to provide the the clinics with much needed security. Who are you to suggest that we would be wasting valuable contributions? Whoever is sponsoring this blog should be ashamed of themselves for giving this Pat Richards this forum.

Alice,
no offense intended as you are correct (in my opinion) that some anti abortion groups are terrorist organizations.
I am not informed or educated on the topic really.
Will the FBI not help?
I mean if there are real threats (and I do not doubt that for a moment), one of the very first duties of our governance is to protect it’s citizens.
The Abortion blog as I have read it is for open discourse. I agree with you, but have found the open discourse to be a beneficial form of communication. I would not get offended, I would just support your position to persuade. Post your organization, you may get donations.
None of us will agree on everything, although most of us agree on a lot of things.
Violence is never tolerated, and never should be. A subset of prolifers have been terrorists. Doesn’t the FBI handle this stuff? If they do not, what are they doing?

Abortion should be protected by government agencies, I agree, it is legal. And there are threats out there.
Abortion is legal and if threatened, it is admirable to raise funds to protect yourself, but you should not have to.
The government should rise to the occasion and protect us from terrorism.

Lots of stuff to clear up here. First, Operation Rescue is now headed by Troy Newman. After Tiller was terminated, I think they moved to Carhart’s area. Second, there are no prolife organizations advocating the use of force. About every five years God raises up an individual, like Paul Hill, Jim Kopp, or Shelley Shannon, who employs force, but all the pro-life organizations turn against her. Third, Alice Reilly, keep talking. The longer you killers helpers misread and denigrate your only eloquent spokesperson, Pat Richards, the better for us prolifers.

Tiller was murdered.
By definition.
And a court of law found the same supporting that he was murdered.
Dunkle, why not use the word instead of terminate? Too much dissonance?

I didn’t know that Troy Newman took over, thanks for the clarification John. I never thought Flip Benham was a good spokesman for you folks, way too slick, all tanned, somewhat of a womanizer. Meanwhile, there was a group that said that it was “justifiable homocide” to kill a doctor called “Defensive Action,” if i remember correctly. Father David Trosch (?) was with them, it was a list of about 20 people who said it was okay to kill docs.

Be real.
For decades there have been many people of position that said it was OK to Murder abortion doctors.
I even remember Donahue having several shows with different people in organizations stating the same.
They are a subset of the prolife crazies, but they are out there in droves. Again Dunkle your facts are just wrong. As are you.

Lisa, I know I said I wouldn’t talk to you (and Todd and Charles)in public, but I’m changing my mind. Your first comment makes sense. I use the word “terminate” to try to show killers helpers like yourself what the word really means when they say “terminate a pregnancy.”
And Pat, I never heard of that organization; I’ll bet the feds dissolved it. And sure, there are thousands of people who agree with me that if someone attacks us or others, we may use defensive force. I can speak only for myself, though, when I say I have not the courage to act on that belief.

John, the feds did not dissolve Defensive Action. They basically fell apart after Paul Hill was executed. Frankly, I was involved in the conversations with the feds about the group and it was determined that they could not do anything because they were not making direct threats, just using inflammatory language. I defended their right to do just that, as much as I didn’t like what they were suggesting.

I will not give the name of my pro-choice organization. I will tell you that the feds are watching this even very closely, they know what Operation Rescue is capable of doing and things are particularly tense since the assassination of Doctor Tiller. The money that we raise will be spent to buy metal detectors for the clinics, to conduct security training for the staff, to have people on the ground monitoring OR’s activities. We have to put our staff in hotels, feed them, provide them with walkie talkies, etc.
We cannot let our guard down! These are domestic terrorists who will stop at nothing and we will not let them deny women the right to choose!

WOW – TERMINATED
Really??????????
I am discussed to read that post of yours John, usually I laugh a little on your posts because it is somehow funny to see how somebody who sometimes show to be so smart can still think the way you think… but we live in a FREE country so you do have the right of SPEECH correct???
A cell that it is just there, trying to become a life, after the 12 weeks of cell multiplication to form a fetus and than when is born it becomes a baby!!!
Different of MURDERING a doctor, who was born years ago, went to school, college, marriage, family, etc… etc…
I just lost a little bit of respect for the pro-life people after your comment… oh well!!!
Alice – On your first post I was kind of scared the way you approach the whole post by itself, but on your second one, you made it clear the need of the money for those specifics expenses… training is for sure one of the things that it is most needed, specially when dealing with people that do not see anything besides what they want to see it…

WOW, John you are beyond out of it.
How dare you say God raises an individual…
That proves that people like you (fanatics) need to be watched out for. I can not believe that people like you have the courage to say such a thing and use God as an excuse for those terrible acts.
People who think like you are no different than the terrorists we have overseas.
