September, 1993.
Six months after the assassination of Doctor David Gunn.
I was sitting at my desk in the offices of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers, thinking about the memorial we were going to hold in Pensacola, Florida in March to commemorate the first anniversary of David’s brutal murder. We had decided, with some trepidation, to have an open air event with our doctors and clinic staff at the site where David was killed earlier that year.
We knew it was going to be an extremely emotional and solemn event and those who had decided to go were clearly on edge. I’ve always had a flair for the dramatic so I started thinking about something I could do to make this event one that they would never forget. So, I picked up the phone and called a friend of mine who worked at the White House.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, I said “Betsy, we’re doing this event in March of next year and I think the President should send our folks a message of support.” You could hear a pin drop. You see, at that point it was clear that President Clinton was pro-choice but to ask him to actually acknowledge the work of abortion doctors was taking things to a whole new level. No president had ever even mentioned the doctors and staff who worked in our clinics. It was the same old story: you could say you were pro-choice but no politician would actually talk about abortion, especially the President. So, I knew I was pushing the envelope.
“Are you out of your mind?” she asked.
I then went on for another few minutes and, at the end of the conversation she said “let me see what I can do.”
The conversations went on for weeks but to me the good news was that they were still going on. By December, no one in the White House chain had said “no.” Then, in early January, Betsy called me and said “I still cannot promise anything, we’re going back and forth on this but why don’t you draft something up for us?’ Within two hours I had drafted a letter from President Bill Clinton praising the doctors and staff for the work they performed. I gulped and faxed it over to her.
Several more weeks went by and I heard nothing. By now, the details of the event were all set. We planned on having the outdoor ceremony at the site of David’s murder and, after some remarks by staff people who worked for David Gunn, I would give a speech. It was my hope to start it off by reading this first of its kind letter from the President of the United States.
A few days before we were going to fly to Pensacola, I still hadn’t heard anything. I kept calling and getting no response. I figured it was done. Then, the day before my flight Betsy called me. “We’re talking to him today about it.” HIM? As in the President? Yep, she said casually. My heart was in my throat. And then I didn’t hear from her the rest of the day.
The next day my flight was scheduled to leave at 2:00 p.m. At 10:30 Betsy called me and said “he approved the letter.” I seriously had tears in my eyes when I asked her when it would get to the office. “We just sent it by courier.” Literally about 30 minutes before I had to leave, the letter in a White House envelope was in my hands and it stayed with me all the way down to Pensacola.
On the day of the event, as about 100 abortion providers sat outside in the Pensacola sun, I opened up the ceremony and announced that I “had a letter from a friend.” Without identifying who the letter was from (no one was in on the secret except my staff), I started reading the letter which congratulated “those of you who offer abortion services to thousands and thousands of women each year.” One person later told me that she thought I was going to announce that the letter was from some “lame pro-choice congressman.”
Then, towards the end of this wonderful letter, I read the last paragraph which started “So, Hillary and I want to extend to you…” I could barely get the words out and the crowd collectively gasped. I have the tape of this event you can hear one person say out loud “Holy Shit!” I could see people actually crying as I (barely) finished the letter.
The President of the United States had finally recognized them. In the years that followed, the President used other occasions to congratulate our group but by then it was “old hat.” It was getting him to do it for the first time that took all the work – and it was worth it.
Today, the letter hangs on my wall.

It is not about Franklin calming down.
How do you know Franklin is not calm anyway? Rhetorical – you have no idea.
The point is, you cannot answer a question, ever.
It is annoying apparently to everyone that tries to discuss anything with you.
You keep talking about literacy?
When it comes to dialogue you are not up to par.
You make this site very boring.
Why don’t you answer questions?
And don’t answer with your egotistical, lofty typical answer about how you are more literate than others. That is a long boring festival of stupid comments that everyone is tired of reading about.

Harriet, you have to accept that what the most vociferous so-called “pro-lifer” here does supports the movement’s agenda. Note:
1. He constantly and consistently trots out the sanguinary imagery which is key to the dysfunctional self-help movement’s public relations: “torture,” “killing,” “innocents” “murder,” “arms and legs,” “heroes,” “braver than I,” “defense of life,” and so on.
2. He attacks where other so-called “pro-lifers” dare not tread, using an armamentarium of half-truths and outright lies, unafraid to be called out and skillful enough to allow himself to be thought stupid rather than be held to account for either his facts or his logic.
3. He represents the deep underside of the movement, giving vent to their repressed rage, helping them to project their flaws and failures (as they perceive them) onto “pro-choicers.”
4. He protects the better-monied, better-mannered and equally duplicitous leadership by drawing attention away from the fact that they too are peddling the same snake oil.
The only way you can counter him is to show that you personally care for human life far better than he does: Adopt a few children; donate 8% of your gross annual income to the direct betterment of a child whose family can’t or won’t take care of him; spend 600 hours a year as a public school classroom volunteer, a Big Sister, a family court guardian ad litem, an after-school mentor. Show him what being “pro-life” really is all about.

she is kind and compassionate to others, even if they have opposiung stances.
she found out about how badly my own experience with abortion affected me and she reached out and offered and urged the emotional and spiritual healing that she knows is sometimes needed.
our own personal experiences with abortion affected us differently and so we have different stances.
i know for a fact that she has stopped women from having an abortion.
i would easily venture to say that your behavior has led them to have one.
she is pro-choice, but she encourages me to continue in my stand for life as long as my tactics are motivated and acted out in love and compassion.
she has been stalked and terrorized by lunatics that employ tactics that you applaud and use yourself, yet she finds it in her heart to be concerned for me for taking strangers into my home.
she is a better catholic than i am because she is a better person than i am.

Even though I disagree with Past President having sex in the Oval office it has nothing to do with the discussion. Especially when one compares a stupid thing like sex in the Oval office to a two term president bush murdering 100,000s in a preemptive war that has devoured our nation.
Still has nothing to do with the main topic of this page.

Pat, where can we read the whole letter?
It would be great to have a look at it.
Sadly, the situation in my country is very different: whatever you may call an “abortion clinic” is run by anyone but a doctor, in unhealthy conditions.
Last presidential period a Reproductive Health Law was passed and approved by the Parliament (including articles on the legalisation of abortion, which would be provided by the Public Health Care system for free, by a doctor and in safe conditions), but those articles were vetted by the then President, on the basis of his personal beliefs.
However, the current President, who has openly stated to be pro-life has also stated that if and when the Abortion Law is presented again during his legislature and approved by the Parliament he would not dare to vet it, on the basis that the Parliament is the sovereign in a cause like this one and that he cannot put his personal beliefs before those of the people.

Paola: the letter is not on line anywhere (I dont think Al Gore had even invented the Internet by that time). It’s floating around my house somewhere. The situation in your country, however, is a “good” reminder to people in this country what abortion could be like if we made it illegal again.

Pat,
Thanks for sharing an amazing story about a president who supported women and men/women who supported women with their reproductive health care needs.
On another note, yet related to something you said in the comments, there are those who continue to make disconnected remarks (as in disconnected to your article) usually directed at John Dunkle. What those of us at Abortioneers and thenotsodailyherald have recently learned, after ignoring him over and over, is that Mr. Dunkle has stated he is giving up with our respective blogs. Perhaps, just perhaps, if you ignore him, he will go away here as well. The silent treatment is his Achille’s heel.

I hear what you are saying, Kate, but I think it’s a dyke that we cannot plug. What I see are some pro-choicers who just constantly feel they have to tweak him and, of course, he has to respond. I have a feeling that as long as John reads my blogs, he will always be around. Indeed, I am often disappointed that when I write something the comments immediately degenerate into inane, unrelated comments about John. Can folks comment on my friggin blog (like Kate just did) or ask follow up questions or voice opinions on what I am saying? Where are the prochoicers out there when I criticize the pro-choice movement? I think I ask legitimate questions of both sides and half the time the response is “Oh, Dunkle is so dumb he should be called Dumbkle”. Well, that’s just as dumb…

Really,
As I read these pages Dunkle is the person who has written most the inane coments.
I agree, it’s good to show the public how a pro lifer cannot create a solid statement to support their position.
I believe me talking about Dunkle dumb comments is adding to the conversation to show something very important about ProLifers.
The Dunkle inability to express a belief well is well documented so in that sense, I wouldn’t mind if you kicked him off.
I also read prochoicers making good comments routinely, and I find the ProLifers do not respond.
It is all over this blog, the more I read.

Have you noticed the more you try and exert some control, you impotency is revealed by more people revealing what you are?
In impotent old dinosaur out of touch with modern times who often speaks out on issues you have no knowledge,
Like your Salpingectomy comment.
This why I think you should leave. You interior the flow of good commentary with you ridiculous meaningless comments and lies.
Now that is boring!

OK, Anthony, I fixed the first paragraph. Now work on the others.

Actually, I think it’s important that he be heard. He is, contrary to the protestations of his ilk, a very, very good representative of the entire movement– passionate, driven by illogic in so many ways, unable to deal rationally with contradictory truths, incapable of pursuing arguments to determine truth, unable to care for real human life, yet so compelled to act out an heroic role he has defined for himself, no matter what the cost it might incur on real children and their other family members. He represents what you find when you lift up the rock of the so-called “pro-life” movement– its aborticentrism.
By the way, just in passing (since I can’t find the thread with the topic), I have to apologize for guessing that Dr. Slepian was a midget who was murdered by a shot fired from two miles away. He was actually a typical sized American, and if he’d been standing at home plate, his murdered would have shot him with an assault rifle from first base.

Now you know why I love Chuckles in spite of his gobbledygook (see paragraph 2 above). But he frustrates me constantly: now he’s back to implying that the people I am trying to protect are “unreal human life.” Turn my head and he reverts.
