For many years, the anti-abortion movement, in particular the radical group “Lambs of Christ,” vowed to try to close the only clinic in North Dakota, the Fargo Women’s Health Organization. The clinic was owned by my good friend, Susan Hill, who passed away last year and was run by another good friend, Jane Bovard. In addition, their primary doctor was Susan Wicklund, who was actually the first abortion doctor to talk publicly about anti-abortion terrorism in an interview on “Sixty Minutes.”
Hoping to make North Dakota an “abortion free state,” the anti-abortion groups were merciless. This little clinic, which looked like an old house, was truly the last bastion on the lone prairie. At times, there were literally thousands of protestors at their front door, the clinic was the target of numerous physical attacks and the staff was terrorized on a regular basis. Ms. Bovard, who lived right in Fargo, was the target of incessant stalking, death threats and protests at her home. Still, the clinic survived. And, ultimately, Ms. Bovard went off on her own and opened up the Red River Women’s Clinic. Because of the small population base, the town could not handle two clinics and the FWHO closed. So, today there is still one clinic in North Dakota and, knock on wood, things seemed to have quieted down considerably in that state.
Over the years, the effort to save or close the only abortion clinic in North Dakota was a cause célèbre for activists on both sides of the issue. Whenever anything of interest happened out there, the fundraising letters started flying. Remember, when things are quiet, it’s very difficult to raise money.
And now we have Jackson, Mississippi. For many years, there has been only one clinic in the state, the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and it was owned by, you guessed it, Susan Hill. It was (and is) an absolutely beautiful clinic and it has been serving women in that state for many years. But it is now in danger of closing – and not because of anti-abortion terrorism.
No, it seems that the Governor of the state, Phil Bryant, is ready to sign a bill into law that would require doctors who work in abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at a local hospital and to be board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Diane Derzis, the new owner of the clinic, said its physicians are OB-GYN certified but only one has admitting privileges. That’s because most of her doctors live out of state because they have been stalked and threatened and most hospitals will not grant such privileges to out-of-state physicians.
Of course, anti-abortion advocates are saying these laws are necessary to insure the “safety” of the women. How kind of them! And then they discover that – oh look – I didn’t know that getting privileges was so difficult. Gee whiz, I guess that means the clinic will have to close. What a surprise!
This is
not about making abortion safer. It’s about politics – once again – and it’s about claiming bragging rights for having the first state in the nation to have no abortion clinics. But, of course, we all know that the women in Mississippi will continue to get abortions because the desire to NOT bear a child is so strong that a woman will go to extraordinary lengths to terminate her pregnancy. Oh, yes, for some women, especially poor ones, this will be yet another obstacle to overcome. But as history has shown, that woman will scrounge up a little more money for the bus trip to Louisiana or Alabama. They will find an abortion provider and do what they have to do.
Meanwhile, however, the legislators in Mississippi thump their chests and crow about how they are now an “abortion free state.” Abortions may no longer be performed in Mississippi, but women in Mississippi will continue to get abortions.

I am really sorry to hear about the loss for the women of Mississipi. It must be hard having a much needed healthcare service being provided for you in your home state and then just losing it like that. I live in Ireland where women are forced to travel overseas to England to get abortions, so I can empathize with women in similar situtations. Travelling to get such serious medical procedures done and then travelling back home (most of the time in the same day) is an awful thing to have to go through. Exhausting and stressful…
How can any anti-abortionists pretend they actually care about women?
They are so deluded it’s terrifiying..

There are similarities. I will note that the clinic has not yet closed. Indeed, it is possible that the law might be challenged by the clinic or the ACLU. Or maybe there are other ways around it. We’ll just have to see what happens.
And you are correct. The anti folks care more about the friggin fetus than the woman…

It is sickening in America, a state like Mississippi can give the finger to the federal government and deny civil rights to women.
We’ll see how this plays out . . .

I dont think those in Mississippi would say they are giving the finger to the feds. They would just claim “states rights” and to a great extent that is true. They do have the right to make changes like this.

Hello Alexandra,We can definitely help you in craniteg an archive page for your website on Thursday. On a side note, if you take a look at the under the RSVP for Clinics section, you may notice that we actually have a separate post for each clinic date for the upcoming two weeks. In the future, if you could leave us a comment on the post labeled with the specific date that you would like to visit, it would help us make sure that we do not lose track of your comment. We hope this clears up the sign up process and we’ll see you on Thursday.Regards,Aleksandar

And everybody thought the so-called “pro-lifers” would have a more difficult time ramming their agenda through in an Obama presidency!
This has a lot to do with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), which for the last two decades has been very quietly co-ordinating wingnut legislation and campaigns state-by-state. Pay less attention to the dysfunctional twelve-step movement that calls itself “pro-life” and pay more attention to where your state’s Republicans are coming from.

Interesting, Charles, I had never even heard of ALEC. But in a strange way I have to tip my hat to them because they are dedicated, fixated and organized. Taking legislation in one state and basically xeroxing it for others is a good strategy.

I come across more good news on the pro-death abortion.ws blog than I do in most prolife writings. This week, 4/8, for example, I learned that Mississippi will soon be the first state to end legal child-killing. May many more follow.
As honest, and as forthright, and as open to dialogue as the writer over there, Pat Richards, is, though, he is unable, when it comes down to it, to talk straight. This terrible inability causes most literate pro-deathers to become embittered. Pat is very good at hiding it If he is indeed embittered; if he’s not, I pray to God he doesn’t fall into that pit.
Here’s Pat not being able to talk straight: “Of course, we all know that the women in Mississippi will continue to get abortions because the desire to NOT bear a child is so strong that a woman will go to extraordinary lengths to terminate her pregnancy.”
Talking straight would be this: “Of course, we all know that the women in Mississippi will continue to get abortions because the desire to NOT bear a child is so strong that a woman will go to extraordinary lengths to kill that child.”
No pro-deather is able to be that honest, not even Pat.

Mr. Dunkle, as soon as you can show me a fetus that can converse, I’ll believe that it is a child independent of the pregnant woman’s belief that it is so.
It is because of the difference in kind between a fetus and a child that you steadfastly refuse to consider what it takes to make a fetus a child– i.e., you don’t want to know why feral children are feral and not fully human.
And it is your complete avoidance of responsibility for the upbringing of even one fetus you want to “rescue” that seals your fate as unable to care for human life. The only question is how completely uncaring you are.

You know, he was a Catholic school teacher, which means he probably got screwed on Social Security like all the nuns did. Which would also mean he has had to depend on his wife’s income to eke out his retirement. Just a thought for all those times she answers the phone and it’s a “pro-choicer” for him…..

Because i was sure that “whoever” works inside a clinic providing abortions IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN OB/GYN at least, i have no idea what this “admitting privileges” means, but the OB/GYN i know.

The Jane Group of pre-Roe days were civilian saints who developed an underground abortion service for early abortions. Their system was far more involved using more instruments. It’s much easier now thanks to suction. You just need to know how to be safe and know your limitations. No reason trained personnel can’t do early ABs.

actually, before there were laws in the US against abortions, nurses and midwives performed them routinely.
the laws against abortion in the US were a backlash against the suffrage movement, and not even based on moral views, muchless concern for either the baby or the mother.
laws vary from one state to another as to who can and can’t legally perform abortions, and it isn’t necessary in all states for an ob/gyn certified doctor to perform them.
it is also my understanding that a bill was recently introduced in california to allow nurses and midwives to perform them, although i am clue-free as to what happened to the bill after the introduction.

Admitting privileges translates to a doctor having the right to admit patients to their hospital. And not all docs in AB clinics are GYN docs.

It is routine in the US that doctors do not have admitting privledges, yet if they do an office based procedure and there is a complication they have covering doctors at the hospital.
How many dermatologists do you know with admitting privledges(?) and they do major skin surgery and flaps and Moh’s right in their office.
Procedures much more complicated with higher danger than a simple first tri mester abortion.

Not all abortion doctors are OB-Gyns. Indeed, Doctor George Tiller, who did late term abortions, was a family practitioner. As for admitting privileges, it just means that if a doctor has an emergency he or she can bring the patient to the hospital where he/she has privileges to practice.

I’ve seen a Pediatrician set a cast on an adult.
Family Practitioners to Liposuction.
Dentists injecting Botox . . .
A license to practice medicine pretty much allows the Doctor to broadly practice medicine. Although they better be trained, competent, and adhere to the community standard of care.
The main problem of earlier years, was that doctors were not taught how to perform abortions in Medical School or Residency. So many learned almost as an apprenticeship.
Doctors, as a matter of routine, learn new procedures over the years by attending workshops and Continued Medical Education.
This is the norm.

I wonder what would have happened if the anti legislators just said “we want to require admitting privileges because we know that the docs at that clinic can’t get them and that would result in the closing of the clinic.” I dont think that would have made a difference in MS, but perfhaps in other states where there might be some moderates voting, the “we care about women” approach is a little better…
