On December 30, 1994, an anti-abortion zealot named John Salvi walked into two clinics in Brookline, Massachusetts and killed two abortion clinic workers. He wounded five others. There had been other murders, of course, but this one was different because Mr. Salvi went in not necessarily targeting the doctor. It was just a random massacre of people who were there to help women.
As a staff person for the National Coalition of Abortion Providers, I was at the Baltimore Aquarium when I got the call about the murders. On an empty tank of gas, my younger son and I sped back to the office in Alexandria and we started the drill. We gathered as much accurate information as possible (not an easy task) and issued a broadcast fax to several hundred clinics across the country. We got them the information because they needed to be prepared when their local media showed up at their door for comments. I was never presumptuous enough to suggested talking points. These folks were in danger every day of their life – they knew what to say.
I gave a few interviews as well. The one I remember most clearly was when I was flown to New York City to be on Good Morning America. Things were crazy for a while, even though they caught Mr. Salvi rather quickly after he unsuccessfully tried to shoot up one of our clinics in Norfolk, Virginia.
About a week later, an agent from the FBI called and asked to meet with me. He came to the office a few days later and he expressed concern that this latest shooting spree was something different in that it targeted “ancillary personnel.” He added that it might inspire another terrorist to “up the ante” and go after others that were peripherally involved in the abortion issue, like pro-choice advocates. My first reaction was that high profile advocates like Eleanor Smeal with the Feminist Majority Foundation and Kate Michelman with the National Abortion Rights Action League certainly deserved protection. But, although I was a relatively low profile advocated, the fact that I had been on Good Morning America caused the FBI some concern. I started envisioning a federal marshal sitting in my office every day and going with me to the local book store. But, instead, the agent just said that “you need to protect yourself.” I wasn’t sure what he was talking about and when I asked him directly he said “you might think about getting a gun.”
Now, I am totally anti-gun. If I could I would take every one away from every American, the NRA be damned. So, when he made the suggestion, I just had to laugh. Ultimately, however, they frightened me enough and a few days later I walked literally across the street where there was a small little gun shop. Hey, I live in Virginia, what can I tell ya?
I walked in and told the crust ole guy behind the counter about my situation and he calmly started talking about twenty twos or twenty threes or whatever, how certain guns feel in the palm of your hand, how you intend to use them, firing power, cost. My friggin head was spinning. Then he suggested I try holding a few guns just to “get the feel.” When he handed me the first one – a real live gun – my hand started to shake and I started sweating palpably. It’s one thing to play guns as a kid, using a stick as an imaginary AK 47, wiping out the bad guys. It’s another thing to hold a weapon that, once loaded, can actually kill a person. I imagined how I would actually use it to defend myself, where I would have to keep it on my person. I thought about having to be so aware of my surroundings that if a would-be assassin crept up behind me, I would be able to calmly turn around, whip the gun out of my pants, cock the pistol, aim and shoot before he shot me. In a more likely scenario, I visualized walking down the street at night and having an old school buddy tap me on my back to say hello. Oh yeah, I’m cool enough to tell the difference between a prolife assassin and my ole baseball buddy!
I dropped the whole idea pretty quickly. My family and I, however, did take precautions. When an unidentified box was delivered to our office one day, I called the police, they brought the dogs and after watching it for an hour, they opened the box, only to find a bottle of wine. And when Doctor Bart Slepian was later killed while standing in front of his window in his home, we kept all of our blinds closed for months and remained very aware of who might be outside in our wooded lot. In a way, it was good for me to go through these exercises as it reminded me what our abortion doctors and their staff were going through on a daily basis. They have to be aware of the cowards who might sneak up behind them or who might be stalking in the woods. These pro-life assassins should only have half as much courage as these doctors.

Yeah, that’s what happens, Pat, when you think some folks are killing or helping to kill others. I think that, of course, but I don’t act on it because I’m a coward.
And by the way, I gotta say good-bye again on “comments.” I used to think it was Elena who was erasing me but now I believe it’s LDM. I just entered eleven comments. All erased. The two I’ll include here kind of sum it up:
“When someone wrote something stupid, Eric, I learned during my long teaching career to avoid telling him it was stupid. I learned simply to repeat what he said. Lots of students, not everybody though, learned then to avoid writing stupid stuff. “You’re a jerk,” or words to that effect, are simply stupid. Get it?”
“The stupids are beginning to take over this blog. Oh well, I knew it was too good to last.”
Funny, until a few days ago, not a single one of my comments had been erased after I’d returned to give it another shot.. And then I guess I just got to her.

actually, pope john paul 2 apologized for the atrocities committed by the catholic church throughout history.
the rcc is currently undergoing a purge of those who have used their authority in order to abuse innocents.
we are likely to see new cases arise in the near future, not because there are new episodes, but rather because old ones are being uncovered.
as a practicing catholic, i WANT these atrocities to be uncovered and the accused given due process, and the victims to be given the justice that they deserve.
i am not as concerned with how things LOOK in the church as i am with how they ARE.
the next thing the church needs to work on is sexual equality.

There is no Censorship.
Obviously there are SPAMers that we get every day by the thousands to millions across the websites, they have to be denied access as they create Christian Criminal Denial of Service (DOS) attacks, among many other illegal Christian activities.
John Dunkle has been told specifically in the past several times that just repeating what is written to him, and changing out a few words without meaningful content also is a form of SPAM and will not be tolerated. That is not censorship. It is enforcement of Anti SPAM Terms & Conditions.
If he continues to break the most simple rules of the SPAM Act, and these are criminal activities, he will be banned.
Otherwise NONE of his hateful, misguided comments are censored in anyway whatsoever.
He appears deluded when he speaks of being censored when he is allowed the broadest range of lunacy.

OK, OK, so how ‘bout this. Somebody writes something stupid: ”It is sickening how many Catholic Anti Abortion Terrorists are lurking in the woods, on the protest lines, and on the blogs, trying to find their next victim of their demented Catholic terrorism.”
The most effective way to show it’s stupidity would be this way: “It is sickening how many Jewish Pro Abortion Terrorists are lurking in the woods, on the protest lines, and on the blogs, trying to find their next victim of their demented Jewish terrorism.”
Or when somebody else writes something like this: “Dunkle” you are “such” an “ignoramus”. “You” need to “go” back to “school” to learn “something,” the most effective way would be, “Why” “do” “you” “say” “that”, “LDM”?
However, according to both LDM (Lorraine Dennis Maguire) and EC (Elena Carvin) I can’t do that – something about the machine not accepting spam or their not their not liking what I write. Whatever . Anyway, according to them that’s why I’ve been getting erased.
So I’ll do this instead. Whenever anyone posts something stupid, I’ll just respond, “stoopit.”
A long time ago, Pat, you asked the illiterates to refrain from attacking me personally. You said something like, “Ask John one question and he will answer it. Don’t use this blog to score debating points.” And I think you added that when you see a response with lots of exclamation points and question marks, you skip it. I think we have a new group of illiterates now and I think they could use a similar message.

And, by the way, as usual, Kate twisted Swift’s message 180 degrees. The English then were helping to kill the Irish by starving them to death — even more slowly and painfully than Kate is helping to kill young people today.
Swift’s way of combating this is to pretend the absurd is rational — the Irish should eat their young before the English get to them.
Swift would be shocked today, though. We really do “eat” our young. The argument goes that since we are dispatching them anyway we might as well get some benefit from them.

And all they were doing is desecrating the temple! Guess what he would have done if they were pulling the arms and legs off young people.

Pat, Your article about guns and being careful reminds me of how disturbing this how anti crowd can be. In the Lehigh Valley, the protesters seem to delight in calling out volunteer escorts or clinic staff when they see them out of context.
While I’ve not had the pleasure of encountering one anywhere, many have including
#Joyce telling wretched lies about a very sweet 84 year old escort to a clerk in BJs (a warehouse store
#Don proselytizing in a frame shop to a security guard till the owner told him to leave
#Mary (aka Linebacker) saying “Hello, Lucy, remember me from the mill?” in a store
I’m sure there are more incidences but these are ones I recall off the top of my head—these antis seem to eat, sleep and live this ghoulish way of life, spreading their nastiness like cochroaches leaving droppings and infesting everything that crosses their path.
Then there is John Dunkle who thinks protesting at doctors and directors homes works. Like many others who have been subjected to this B-rated drama, the neighbors have always sided with the doctors and directors, believing the protesters are inappropriate.

But to go to some ones home is entirely different! I myself would be afraid to go on to someone’s property and protest at their home!!…There are laws in the U.S. that say if someone comes on your property and you fear for your life…you can “Kill them”!! I think that these “radical anti-choice terrorist” are really taking it too far terrorizing people in their homes!!
When they protested in my neighborhood…all they accomplished was the people “hated them” they did NOT hate “Me”!! Although most of my neighborhood seems to be “in the “RED” shade” they still feel that your home is your “castle” and that protesting there is stepping over the line!!

Interesting research:
How women anticipate coping after an abortion
Diana Greene Foster , Heather Gould, Katrina Kimport
Contraception,Volume 86, Issue 1 , Pages 84-90, July 2012
Abstract
Background
There has been some study of women’s emotional and psychological well-being after an abortion but no research into women’s expectations, at the time of seeking an abortion, of how they will cope after the abortion.
Study Design
We abstracted counseling needs assessment forms of 5109 women who sought an abortion at a clinic in 2008.

The most common emotions that women anticipate feeling after their abortion are relieved (63%) and confident (52%). A significant minority anticipate feeling a little sad (24%) and a little guilty (21%); 3.4% anticipate poor coping. Women with fetal abnormalities, women who do not have high confidence in their decision, women who have spiritual concerns about abortion, women with a history of depression, women who feel that they were pushed into having an abortion and teenagers are more likely to anticipate poor coping postabortion.
Conclusions
The vast majority of women expect to cope well after their abortion. A small number make the decision to terminate their pregnancies even though they anticipate difficulty coping after the procedure.

Can’t we stop posting others who agree with us? Each side has an endless number of those. Boring. How about if we just read them ourselves and use them to speak with our own voices. So much more interesting.

The above said by a man whose response to ad hominem criticism is to repeat it rather than address the critic’s underlying issue and who has dumped chunks of his own blog here. Both are examples of the desire to be a hero with the minimum expenditure of energy; in other words, being a hero on the cheap.
Kate’s excerpt is not the posting of someone who “agrees with her.” It is a professional paper which counters the claims of aborticentrists and thus compels him to mischaracterize it in order to maintain the integrity of his belief system.
If he ever grants the truth of even one “pro-choice” argument, it would put his entire structure at risk for crumbling. Lacking the intellectual breadth to accommodate contrary input, he must continue as the sort of person whose argument makes people say, “Huh?”

pat, last year during harassment that i received, some friends suggested that i might want a gun.
but i am afraid to have one in the house and with a baby having been on the way, even more so.
so i am pretty anti-gun as well.
but it is also terrifying to know that doctors can be killed at church by people who aren’t scared to have guns.
so i can hardly find fault in a clinic worker who owns a firearm for protection.

I never thought that I would carry a gun either “Roggie”! But when things here got so bad that the CPD met with me and said…”We can NOT protect you from this women!! She is a whack-O…and suggested that I carry a gun!! I like Pat..really had to think “long & hard” but ultimately decided that i had NO other choice…but to carry a gun!!
But my “terrorist” left me NO choice…she came to my home when she know I was at work…rand the bell and tried to get my “95 y/o grandmother” to let her come in…but luckily she didn’t!! But she did at some point go into my yard and look into all of my windows….then when she was at the clinic would describe the inside of my home!! She or someone in her group followed me and went into small businesses that I used and strongly suggested that they should NOT do business with me…because perhaps they would be picketed/protested against!! Many of them told me…but NONE of them caved in….
She knew enough of my personal story….the rest she embellished upon it took MANY years…F.A.C.E. Laws and Stalking laws for me to finally put an end to her “reign of terror” She was finally convicted of Stalking!! But I continued to carry the gun…why??…because it gave me some sense of security…BUT I did pray that I would NEVER have to use it
I have been wanting to say this for days…but we have all fallen into “Dunkle’s” trap and spent a lot of time letting him derail the conversation with all his “childish crap”!! He got to laugh at us everyday!!
To quote “Dunkle”….stopit…stopit…stopit…”Dunkle” if you have run out of original things to write about!!!

what i dealt with was VERY shortlived in comparison to what you dealt with, lorriepoo.
and too, i was the only one targeted. i didn’t have to deal with knowing that my family was targeted like you , todd stave, and so many other people have had to deal with.
i can’t imagine the hatred that dwells within someone that would allow them to target children in order to get at their parents.
SHAME!
i am SO impressed that todd stave used his experience and turned it around into something that would help others, yet still respect the rights of everyone involved.
if i had been in his situation, i would have been so upset, i don’t know how i would have reacted.
i am anti-gun, but i can sure understand why someone who lives under a constant threat of terrorism would have one.

All you poor ol’ killers’ helpers, so afraid someone is going to track you down that you simply have to pack. Know how many of you have been tracked down since you got your way in 1970 and child killing became legal? Seven, that’s how many. Know how many you’ve tracked down? Seventy million, that’s how many.

Ibrahim,
John Dunkle was interviewed about five years ago saying he respects everyone. Well, here’s a great example about his pathological lying. He doesn’t respect you enough to use your proper name. It’s no different than John calling an African American man “boy” because he “likes it better” than using the man’s given name

NICE, YOU SAY. Having Kate take video as she and Ellen go round and round the block. Posting same videoes on You Tube. Guess that is some of the things we have encountered, will add more later. Almost forgot, Jihaddist, and Terrorist were common lingo amoung them. Signs ripped and stolen , by Kate to name one as she readily admitted to when the police were called. It was in their dumpster so she could not hide.

Oh, yippee, I guess we’re reaching some of the pitiful pearls who whined about being disrespected to the Human Relations Commission, who cried to the police officer that it wasn’t fair when counter protesters made fun on them, or who filed and lost a frivolous lawsuit about some imagined conspiracy to thwart their rights and having the unmitigated gall to ask for $200,000 in compensation for their emotional distress. But did they ever consider the emotional distress they caused with their tyrannical invasion of women’s privacy? No, Nope, Nada. Why? Because they don’t have a “nicety nice side.”
As for the names, I rather liked the names, myself. I cannot take credit for the names, however. Linebacker and Pan Face came from one of the male escorts because he thought she was a guy. Of course, after the nickname circulated, the protester showed up all dolled up with makeup, nail polish and curly hair. Show she looked like a linebacker in drag.
As for the Walrus, I’m guessing that came to mind because the trough-feeder spent too many days at McDonald’s.

Last time I left a comment, my name, “David” was somehow changed to “Anonymous.” Imperfect system. Don’t throw away the Spam filter, even if JD gets pissed.
Ibrahim: John likes to insult people.
Anonymous and John: If someone called me a killer, I might be inclined to call that person, if overweight, a Walrus. Ibrahim simply challenged JD with some questions; his decision to insult Ibrahim by distorting his name was (and is) inappropriate.
Ibrahim: You insult Catholics by, in effect, calling them all mass murderers. Your “one true” religion has had its far share of murderers, the most recent being 19 men on planes killing several thousand, some of whom were Muslims, all in the name of your God. Catholic Church BS has all kinds of bad stuff, but the vast majority (JD not included) of Catholics (and Christians, Jews, Hindus, etc.) are like the vast majority of Muslims – good people just trying to get by. Really, not different from a desperate woman seeking an abortion. It is true that vast numbers of innocent (non combatant) people have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, but, sorry to say, that’s what happens in all wars. Need I remind you 6 million non combatant Jews died in WWII? Total world wide, 40 million died of hostilities during WWII, the vast majority unarmed.
If I were an escort and I met an anti away from a clinic, and they addressed my in the ways mentioned above, I might react badly (which is why carrying a gun might not be a great idea, unless JD happened to be that person).
Now one question for JD, who thinks it is OK to protest at people’s homes. I’ve asked this before, and JD has not answered. Suppose someone stood just outside his property with a sign “A Terrorist Lives Here” with a large picture of bloody bodies torn apart by a bomb, would John be happy if an 5 or 6 year old relative (daughter, granddaughter, etc), were to see that? Extreme, yes, but I’ve seen that dismembered fetus picture held up by many protesters, and that’s not what actually happens in the clinics you protest, so the poster I’ve suggested is a similar distortion.

This should be a back and forth venue, Dave. Monologues should be out. You’ve got a lot of good stuff here and I hope you present it bit by bit, and let others respond.
Now to the question. If you asked it before, you must have buried neath a heap of dodo cause I always answer legitimate questions, and this is legitimate: Would I want my 5 or 6 year old relative to see a graphic poster. The answer is yes.
Matter of fact I used to show graphic posters. Occasionally someone would say, “Hey, kids see that.”
My standard response was “It’s for the kids” — “why” — “I want the kid to say,’Daddy, who pulled that baby apart!’ ”
You see, Dave, we are a brainwashed generation. Anybody who can get upset at a picture but not as the reality is brainwashed. Kids are our only hope.

David, There are always two sides to every story. Why not check in with one of accused to see if the stories match up. My guess would be, just like in any other case, a slight variation giving their version a rose colored description. Just saying, that’s all. You said that John was distorting a name, so is calling someone with a God given name, walrus acceptable? This is a test of your character by the way.

Gloria Steinem spoke at a Women’s Leadership Conference at Cedar Crest College recently. In protest to her presence, to feminism and, of course, to abortion, this rag tag bunch re-purposed their abortion clinic signs in a pitiful display, all captured and narrated for your viewing pleasure.
