The January 20 edition of “Time” Magazine has an interesting cover story. It suggests that since abortion was legalized by the 1973 Roe v Wade decision, the abortion rights groups have been “losing ever since.” I’m sure it’s an interesting piece. I say that because I still have not read it. Frankly, I don’t read a lot of pieces like this one because I can predict by now what they will say. And, in this case, I’m just not sure how one can make the determination that we are “losing.”
If you are just looking at the hard numbers, such as the number of abortion clinics in the country, you might think we are losing because there are fewer clinics. Indeed, the pro-choice groups always harken to that statistic which says that 78% (or thereabouts) of the counties in the country have no abortion providers. So, yes, there are fewer clinics, especially in some rural areas. But let’s think that through a little. The fact is that the number of women seeking abortion services has also slowly decreased over the years and fewer patients mean that some clinics will not be able to survive. That’s just plain ole capitalism. So, if the number of clinics is decreasing does that mean we are losing? I’m not so sure. Indeed, I consider abortion a very specialized form of medicine and, unlike chiropractors or dentists, there just isn’t an abortion clinic on every corner. In some rural states, women do have to travel to get an abortion but does that mean we are losing the battle?
The “Time” Magazine piece will no doubt discuss the thousands of anti-abortion bills that have been introduced on the state level. Yep, there is a lot going on and by this time just about every state has some kind of law requiring parental consent, a 24 hour waiting period and other insulting measures. And, sure, these are “victories” for the anti-abortion movement but keep in mind that their ultimate goal is to outlaw abortion and they are nowhere near that goal. In fact, they couldn’t even pass that “Personhood Amendment” in the friggin state of Mississippi. It also failed in Colorado. Also on the national level, keep in mind that the anti-abortion folks control the House of Representative, meaning they control what bills they will consider. And John Boehner and his crew would never, ever think of bringing up a national “Personhood Amendment” for a vote because they know it would never become law. And why make your own members walk the plank voting on such a controversial issue when it’s not going anywhere? Also, on the national level keep in mind that with Obama’s re-election, he will certainly have a chance to appoint some more pro-choice justices who will further enshrine Roe as the law of the land.
I’m sure the piece will discuss the polls and how support for “choice” has dwindled a bit over the years. But I’d be really interested in looking very closely at those polls. How was the question asked? Who conducted the polls? I cannot prove it but I still believe that a majority of people in this country, if engaged in a dignified honest conversation, would eventually say that they support some access to abortion services.
So, yes, over the years we’ve taken our hits and access to abortion services might not be what it used to be. But, for the most part, if a woman in this country wants to get an abortion, she can get one. Does that mean that the pro-choice movement is “losing?”

Another, more holistic approach to abortion from our friend and colleague Tracy Weitz
“To say abortion is an individual woman’s business absolves us of our obligation to create a more just world. A focus on privacy cannot address the stigma of abortion. It cannot reshape our economic policies so that all people can parent with dignity. It cannot get us what we want. The future demands that we do more than simply shift away from polarizing language and instead begin to transform our culture, institutions, and policies so that all people can make the sexual and reproductive decisions they want to achieve the lives they deserve.”

Tracy Weitz, PhD, MPA, is the Director of the Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH) program and Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, both at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). ANSIRH’s mission is to ensure that reproductive health care and policy are grounded in evidence. Dr. Weitz has a master’s degree in public administration with an emphasis in health care from Missouri Southern University and a doctoral degree in medical sociology from UCSF.
Dr. Weitz’s passion is for those aspects of women’s health which are marginalized either for ideological reasons, or because the populations affected lack the means or mechanisms to have their concerns raised. Her current research focuses on innovative strategies to expand abortion provision in the U.S. Included in her research portfolio is a demonstration project of the use of nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician assistants as providers of abortion care in California, several studies of abortion regulation, and a national strategic plan to secure access to later abortion care.

Great article as always, Pat! I felt like before the election women’s rights to have SAFE & LEGAL ABORTIONS was in the fast lane at the “sewer line dump site at the campground!!
Dr.K8theBloggingfem…I am with you…praying that we are able to see President Obama appoint to the Supreme Court several Justices that will be able to understand women must he able to have control over their “reproductive health care”…Even more important than President Obama appointing Supreme Court Justices lets send “Praise to Cheezus” that the Republicans don’t hold these appointments up!!

Now, we have to remember that since Obama’s in, some of the older could-die-tomorrow liberals (Ginsburg) might resign so he can get another more younger appointee. So, in that regard we would just hold our own (unless he appointed a “stealth” candidate who turned around and screwed us all). And, of course, the older conservatives will not resign. They will wait to die in their chairs before giving Obama an opportunity to increase the numbers for Roe….

Great Article!
Also, Private Doctors have increased their use of the Abortion Pill for their patients.
This is a difficult metric to follow. However it reveals, in this one circumstance, that for some women, access to abortion is easier, although the public does not necessarily see this aspect of abortion care.

Pat your article was great.
The TIME piece I feel was also very well done.
I believe people that are attacking it are acting out too viscerally.
The author is clearly Pro Choice and is simply trying to relate an opinion based on the facts observed.
Instead of attacking the TIME article we should work to solve the issues that were brought up.
I think the answer is to keep working hard to elect legislators that will make intelligent laws.

Once again mainstream media’s version of ethical journalism is different from mine. The article is misleading and the way it was presented is annoying, just like their awful presentation of their article on parenting/breastfeeding on demand. Time Magazine is as worthless as Newsweek was and we all know what happened to Newsweek.

All print media is adjusting to the difficult switch to the digital age.
The problem is digital media has yet to find a method to monetarily support hard care Objective professional investigative journalism.

Thou shall not take the name of the Lord they God in vain.
Romans 1:18, 21-22, For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of men who by their wickedness suppress the truth..,for although they knew God THEY DID NOT HONOR HIM as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking and their senseless minds were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
What does it mean that their ‘minds were darkened?” Persistence in sin has damaging effects on the human senses: the mind generally darkens to a point of intellectual blindness, and the heart gradually hardens and grows cold to the love and laws of God.
The beginning of wisdom and knowledge is the fear of the Lord. Turn from the sin or abortion and being an enemy of God into an adopted, obedient son/daughter of God. All of you baby killer supporters – REPENT and be saved.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The former Wichita clinic of slain abortion provider Dr. George Tiller is expected to open in the next few months with one full-time and two part-time doctors amid heightened security and community outreach efforts, its new owners said.
South Wind Women’s Center will offer prenatal, obstetrical and gynecological health care services as well as abortions, said Julie Burkhart, founder of the Wichita-based Trust Women Foundation Inc. The nonprofit purchased the building in late August.

Berkeley Law Launches Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice
Berkeley, CA…. On the eve of the 40-year anniversary of Roe v. Wade, UC Berkeley School of Law today announced the formal launch of its new Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice (CRRJ). Founded by Professor and Pulitzer Prize nominee Kristin Luker, it is one of the first research centers to study the legal, economic, and social impact of reproductive laws on women, families, and communities.
In the four decades since the Supreme Court decided Roe in 1973, a backlash has led to a constitutional right to abortion so laden with restrictions that it has been rendered out of reach for many, said Luker. In the past two years alone, lawmakers across the U.S. have passed a record-breaking 135 new laws restricting abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
“Because of these restrictions and other financial and societal barriers to access, the formal legal right is often not enough for poor, young, and rural women to get the abortion care they need,” said Luker, the author of five books, including Abortion and the Politics of Motherhood. With this in mind, CRRJ is supporting a bill to increase access to abortion care in California by expanding the number of healthcare professionals who can provide it.
“As the nation is mired in a politically-charged debate over abortion, larger issues of women’s and family health services have been obscured,” said Luker.
“We’re examining the courts, legislation, and regulations, as well as how the laws play out in everyday lives,” said the center’s Executive Director Jill E. Adams ‘06. “What is needed for all members of society to obtain access to resources necessary to determine their own destinies related to reproduction?”
The primary reproductive concern for many women and men is the ability to have—and raise—the children they want in safety and dignity. The struggle is particularly difficult for welfare participants in California who are denied aid for a newborn under the Maximum Family Grant (MFG) rule, according to Adams. CRRJ is supporting an effort to repeal the MFG rule, in collaboration with the East Bay Community Law Center and ACCESS Women’s Health Justice, among others. Adams says the rule often interferes with family planning decisions, punishes parents, and hurts children.
Welfare regulations aren’t commonly regarded as reproductive rights issues, but the center is trying to change that. “Part of our work is to impress upon people that these aren’t fringe issues experienced in a vacuum, but widespread experiences that are integral to individual wellbeing and to the realization of economic justice, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, and more,” Adams said.

Lynn M. Paltrow, J.D., is with National Advocates for Pregnant Women, New York, NY and has published in the American Journal of Public Health an alarming article that has potentially harmful implications for all women of childbearing capablity.
Roe v Wade and the New Jane Crow: Reproductive Rights in the Age of Mass Incarceration.
All pregnant women, not just those who seek to end a pregnancy, have benefited from Roe v Wade. Today’s system of mass incarceration makes it likely that if Roe is overturned women who have abortions will go to jail. Efforts to establish separate legal “personhood” for fertilized eggs, embryos, and fetuses, however, are already being used as the basis for the arrests and detentions of and forced interventions on pregnant women, including those who seek to go to term. Examination of these punitive actions makes clear that attacks on Roe threaten all pregnant women not only with the loss of their reproductive rights and physical liberty but also with the loss of their status as full constitutional persons.

Abortion numbers are lower because of many reasons like birth control, undocumented Plan B use, not to mention the difficulties women face if the do want an abortion and cannot get one or choose to self-abort. Self abort is far more common in minorities communities than most might imagine. I find that particularly frightening and deliciously progressive—frightening because it’s dangerous to women’s health yet deliciously progressive because women don’t have to worry about the pain the arse protesters stomping on their rights, invading their privacy.
