I wanted to take my time today to say goodbye to an old friend.
Many of you have no doubt heard of Doctor Susan Wicklund. Susan is a long time abortion provider who for many years travelled throughout the upper Midwest to serve women in need. She generally spent most of her time in Minnesota and North Dakota. What made Susan unique is that she was, as far as I knew, the first abortion provider to go public about how anti-abortion terrorists were stalking her, her family and her colleagues. She “came out” years ago in a “Sixty Minutes” interview that shocked many people who did not know that anti-abortion zealots were following doctors like her through airports, sitting on her front porch at night, calling her home at all hours and terrorizing not just her but her daughter.
After the “Sixty Minutes” episode, the public – including the Clinton Administration – was suddenly much more informed of what was going on out and how a campaign of domestic terrorism was being waged against these doctors and their staff. Unfortunately, not much was done because the Administration and their lawyers said there was no federal jurisdiction over these kinds of activities and that it was up to local police to enforce the laws – which they didn’t do. Only until Doctor David Gunn was murdered did our friends in the Administration start to pay attention and it still took the assassination of another doctor, John Britton, a year later to get the Congress to pass a law giving the federal government jurisdiction over such crimes.
But Susan was the first one out there.
She really didn’t fit the role. She is not a rabble rouser. Yet, she was suddenly thrust into the limelight and became a reluctant spokesperson for the pro-choice cause. Her soft, Midwest demeanor took people aback but her words and her experiences were terrifying.
Years later, Susan wrote about her experiences in her book “This Common Secret.” I’m not sure how well it sold. And I’m thrilled that she has promised to autograph her book for me.
But now Susan is leaving the field. A few years ago, she opened up the Mountain Country Women’s Clinic in Livingston, Montana. She was the kind of doctor who would take the calls herself, who would come in after hours to help a woman in need. She kept her prices artificially low to help women. And that probably hurt her. She often lived paycheck to paycheck.
But, true to form, when she called me the other day to tell me she was closing her office her major concern was who would take care of her patients once she was gone. She was dismayed that they will have to travel a lot further to find reproductive services and that the fees will be higher. But because of personal reasons, she has to shut down the clinic and stop practicing medicine for the time being. She is 59 years old.
I plan on staying in touch with Susan but I want to thank her personally for what she did for my family one Sunday night many years ago.
My late father was a good ole Irish Catholic. He didn’t wear it on his sleeve, didn’t go to church much. But he was a believer. And for many years, while I was running the National Coalition of Abortion Providers, he didn’t say much about my work. Indeed, his silence was deafening and I always had the feeling that he was uncomfortable about who I was representing.
The day Susan gave her interview, we watched the show together in his Myrtle Beach condo. As Susan talked about the terrorism, my father didn’t say a word. He was mesmerized. When it was over, he turned to me and said “I had no idea this was going on and I can see why you want to help these people. Good for you.”
Thanks, Susan.
You’ve touched many people in more ways than you know.

Dr. Wicklund…so sorry to hear that “women” have lost another OB/GYN doctor that provides “abortion services”! I didn’t want to “just” describe you as an “abortion provider” because you are/were so much more!! I pray that you have safe travels where ever you may go…you have helped so many women continue to live their lives…I pray that you have “eternal peace” for that enjoy your “retirement” from the insanity of this life so many of us chose…providing SAFE & LEGAL ABORTION SERVICES THROUGH BERY DIFFICULT TIMES!! Thank you Dr. Wicklund!!

Thanks for chiming in, Lorraine. You better than anyone remember what Susan went through in those days. Of course, you went through the same things. The terrorism was real but you and Susan and others persevered, much to the benefit of thousands of women.

Thanks, Kate. Susan is a cut above. I could have written about her for hours. The torture that she – and her daughter – went through was hard to imagine. But just think about what it was like for her to get up in the morning and have dozens of anti-abortion kooks sitting on her front porch. She could barely get out of her driveway at times. The problem, of course, was that the police didn’t give a rat’s ass about Susan so they let the antis have the run of her property. Then there was the movie about abortion with Cher playing a doctor – can’t remember the name of the movie – and Cher’s character was based on Susan. And Cher gets killed in the clinic. I’m not sure how Susan felt about that….

I agree, Helen. In fact, every March 10 there is an “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day” where people send thank yous and other kudos to those who work in their local clinics. That day, in 1993, Doctor David Gunn was the first abortion provider killed for the work he performed. So, dont forget to participate on that day at least!

No doubt the reference was to Sally Heckel’s surpeb film version of A Jury of Her Peers . If you go to the Links page of this site, under Member Sites, Resources, Publications you’ll see two links, one to Sally’s web site which describes the film, and another to Women Make Movies, which distributes the DVD you or your school can purchase it from there. I’ve used it many times in class and students invariably get a lot out of it.

I have not heard about Doctor Susan Wicklund before, but I’m very happy to have done so now. It reminded me, in a way, to someone else that might have gone a bit under the radar Doctor Denis Mukwege, who escaped being shot at, but bravely enough keep on working his cause.
Everyone has their limits, and Wicklund has reached hers for the moment at least, and it seems to me that she did a very good job along the way and that her heart was in the right place.
Fanatical ‘pro-life’ zealots act totalitarian in their hopes of bypassing and crushing the democratic process and often claim to do so in gods favour. This behaviour is dangerous for many reasons and it’s very good that Wicklund has spoken out about it and raised it to public awareness.
I wish her good luck and safety in her future pursuits.

Craig is right. You cannot get rid of the protestors. Indeed, I would defend their right to protest within certain limits. But the reason why we’re getting creamed in the state legislatures is because the right wing concentrated on getting their folks elected in these “minor” races (versus the Presidency) and that’s where the real power is. And, yes, Craig and his folks have done a great job up in Washington!

Kind words, Jimmie. I dont recall a Doctor Mukwege and I thought I knew them all, including those who were shot at. Was he one of the Canadian doctors that James Kopp tried to kill?

The Cher movie is “If These Walls Could Talk” 1996, HBO
It looks at three women in different eras – 1952, 1974, 1996 (Cher is the Dr in the 1996 case).

She taught me so many lessons but the biggest was to listen to patients, and give them ALL the FACTS. An educated woman will make the best choice for herself. In the words of. I live on the West Coast and we had an abortion provider living in our community. They lived in this gated community for their protection. Yes, many years ago, when they first moved here, there was a huge protest for several days outside the gates of our community which made its way into our local news. And, yes, I’m one of the “pro-life nitwit zealots” which you describe. However, I would NEVER wish harm on ANYONE in their private lives. WE ALL deserve to feel safe in our homes and communities. I may disagree with what he did for a living, but I do not advocate for harassment and bullying.
