Over the last few days, Court TV ran the trial of Scott Roeder, the man who killed Doctor Tiller while he served as an usher in his church. Roeder says that he killed Tiller to “save babies.” That got me to thinking.
A number of doctors who provided abortion services have been killed over the years, but does anyone really think that murdering an abortion provider will “save babies?” I think not.
A woman makes an appointment to have an abortion. Probably ninety nine percent of the time, they have no idea who the doctor is. After all, for the most part they will only see him or her for a few minutes during the procedure. Let’s say a woman has an appointment on a Tuesday and, on Monday, the doctor is killed. Does anyone really think that that woman will change her mind about having an abortion? No way.
What the woman will do is go to the Yellow Pages or the Internet and look under “abortion” and seek another abortion provider. She will then make an appointment and ultimately have her abortion. That “baby,” despite the murder of the original doctor, will not have been “saved.”
Sure, if the doctor was in South Dakota, where there is only one doctor, then it means the woman will have to travel further to procure her abortion. But, as we learned when abortion was illegal in most states, women will go to incredible lengths to terminate their pregnancy. There was a time when women were flying across the country to states like New York or California, spending thousands of dollars, to find a doctor who would perform an abortion. Or, worse, women resorted to self-induced abortions, oftentimes resulting in serious health problems or even death.
The fact is that abortion providers exist because there is a need for abortion providers. These doctors are taking incredible risks to help women. They should be congratulated every day.

Pat, I agree with almost everything you said, but Congratulated? not so sure. If they could find an “easier” way to make a buck, I have no doubt they would. They do it for the money. I think abortion doctors have desensitized themselves to the fact that they are “baby killers” (which they no doubt are). I’m not so sure that “Congrats” are in order.

Actually, Pat, as long as there is a “choke point” at which abortion services can be offered, there will be a high risk for preventing women from having control over the number of children they wish to nurture. There will always be a demand, but unless as many people learn how to provide the service as there were people to provide alcohol during Prohibition, it will be an easily-throttled service. James, you have been sold the “we-are-heroes-because-abortion-is-murder-because-we-say-so” aborticentrism line. Reflect on how much you would like your neighbor’s child to grow up to steal your car, much less to kill 65 women like Ted Bundy did. I’d check out “aborticentrism” if I were you and then provide me some feedback on it.

James: Maybe “congrats” was the wrong word. Good point. About the money, however, in the early days when women were flying all across the country seeking abortions and there were few clinics, I have no doubt that the doctors were making money. Today, with so many clinics around, that’s not the case. Indeed, the average cost of an abortion is about $400, which is basically the price that they charged in the 1980s. Also, there are clinics that will provide discounts or even perform an abortion for free in difficult circumstances. Finally, many of them could practice other, more physically safe, kinds of medicine as most of them are ob-gyns or family practitioners.

An insanity to have this discussion in 2010.
Simple, you are not allowed to kill a doctor because you do not like the legal procedure they do.
Women have the right to control their own bodies.
We are not in the 50’s.
What is going to die is the insanity of the conservative anti abortion movement as they get old and die. It is starting to happen right now, just as many of the racists and bigots are slowly dyeing.
Just a few more years. Discussion does not help with these imbeciles.
We are a notion of law.
We all deserve the right to live under the rule of law. The law is simple, you cannot kill a doctor, and women are allowed to have abortions.
Simple.

I cannot agree that those who oppose abortion are all “imbeciles.” Many of them are well intentioned. I just think that there is so much hype, so much misinformation, as there is on any major issue of our time, and we spend so much time screaming at each other and often lose sight of the facts. It’s easy to get caught up in the rhetoric on both sides of the issue.

I think Larry Joe is pretty close. Those who chose to deny the liberty of another person are for the most part imbecilic in their perspective, and action.
One can see it right here in the comments. Most prolifers sound pretty darn uneducated to the individuals that beleive in individual freedoms and liberties.

They are not imbeciles; they are driven by the need to address their own fear of death. They impute to the fetus all the virtues they feel would earn them life everlasting; they characterize abortion providers with all the worst they see in themselves, and then every time they “rescue” a fetus or kill an abortion provider, they act out their own rescue. It’s a dysfunctional twelve-step program.
