I recently read about an abortion doctor in Philadelphia who apparently is going to be shut down by the state because he is practicing bad medicine.
We all know there are bad apples in any profession. There are bad politicians, police, teachers, and priests. The same goes for physicians, including physicians who provide abortion services.
Of course, one’s definition of “bad” is subjective but we do know that there are abortion doctors who prey on minorities, whose clinic does not provide adequate counseling, who will quote a fee but forget to inform you that there are “add-ons” once you get into the clinic. There are some doctors who have had deaths in their facility, although even the best doctors can make a mistake or have something go wrong that it totally out of their power.
The message here is if you are considering an abortion, do some homework. Find out the name of the doctor and Google him or her. You may find out something about them. See if the clinic is a member of the National Abortion Federation (which has standards for its members) or the Abortion Care Network.
If price is a consideration for you, be careful: cheap is not always the best. Indeed, if there is a clinic in your area that is charging $50 less than their competitor for a similar procedure, you might be a little careful. They may be cutting corners somewhere, like not paying for malpractice insurance or having inexperienced staff people.
If you discover that the physician has been the subject of a malpractice lawsuit, don’t take that at face value. For years, an anti-abortion group brought a number of frivolous lawsuits designed to harass abortion doctors that ultimately were dismissed.
The bottom line is be smart, shop carefully. Like any other medical procedure, you want to make sure you are getting the best care possible.

Teri hasn’t yet replied to your first question (of several weeks ago) about using birth control, Pat, and you’re just as unlikely to get a reply on this one.
I’m just noting again here how the so-called “pro-life” movement is using the issue for an attempt at self-therapy: Instead of engaging in a dialogue, Teri brings out a variation on a market-tested meme: the fetus as a baby in mortal danger.
To respond to you would arouse the insecurities which compel her to seek resolution in the so-called “pro-life” movement. She would be submitting to an exploration of where she’s coming from, which is far too risky for her to undertake.

A woman has the right to control her own body across the reproductive spectrum. If she chooses Abortion as the best thing for her, then that is her right.
All the other very appropriate details count. Even in their absence Women still have that right.
It is the inalienable right to liberty of self determination that is… a pillar of our Republic as Hamilton and Madison wrote extensive volumes. Hume, Adams, Jefferson, Monroe, Franklin, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and all the great thinkers were of this disposition. From the begging of The Enlightenment to this very day.
This is a lofty way to view the issue, and is levels above the legal medical procedure of Abortion. And it is the basic principle why Abortion must, absolutely must be a woman’s choice and no others’. Otherwise we do not have a free Republic, and we should choose another form of governance.

Well expressed, Kate. The practical concern here is how to eliminate the image of abortion as the quintessential evil. To any so-called “pro-lifer” and to a whole lot of uncommitted or uninformed people, you have just come out passionately in favor of the slaughter of innocents, which does not help secure women’s right to determine how well they will take care of the children they want to nurture.
It is very important to link the words “pro-life” and “aborticentrism” to start people thinking about why somebody so fervently in favor of protecting “unborn humans” does so little to care for them once they’re born. They are not all truly sick people, but they are dealing with an underlying neurosis which cripples them. For the most part, the public does not understand that the chasm between what they say and what they do (check out the website) indicates that their characterization of abortion is simply deceptive.

Thanks for the compliment, jl2. While I firmly believe in a woman’s right to choose, I have learned over the years that the arguments are not always black and white. The problem is the national organizations that represent both sides hunker down in their own rhetoric and dont want to say anything that they think will harm their cause. IT’s almost like the Rep and Dem parties these days. It’s just dueling press releases, no one is actually talking to the other side so nothing gets done.

Speaking of bad doctors, there are approx 70,000 people who read this blog every day – have any of you had a bad experience with an abortion doctor? Or, for that matter, a good experience?

Our town’s recently retired after at least 30 years of service (his arrival here predates mine). We are still reeling from the loss. Except for one minor picketing event, he was respected by all in town all those years.

If you go to Springfield, Vermont and ask around, they’d tell you. I won’t name him here because of the possibility of lurking loonies. By the way, if you want to see “pro-lifers” in full-fledged cognitive dissonance, the local demonstrators’ last performance is here:

Why do you suppose it was the last one?

Okay, I’ll repeat it: I won’t give his name, because there are probably some loonies lurking around here, but check with the right people in Springfield, Vermont, and you can find out.
