I was floating around the blog world yesterday and a person who opposes legal abortion screamed at me that “THE ABORTIONISTS ONLY DO IT FOR THE MONEY!”
Abortion became legal in this country on January 22, 1973 (the same day LBJ died). Prior to that, there were a handful of states (NY,CAL) that allowed abortion under certain circumstances and there were a few abortion facilities in those states. So, women from all over the country were flying to those clinics and the staff was working seven days a week to meet the demand. And, yes, with so many patients to care for, the physicians and clinic owners made a decent living. That’s capitalism, right?
Once abortion was legalized more clinics started opening up but, still, because of the incredible demand for the service, those newer clinic were turning a profit as well.
In the early days, the average cost of an abortion was about $250. Here’s the kicker: today the average cost is only about $400. If inflation were taken into account, the cost would be well over $1,000.
Think about that for a second. A woman goes to a clinic, spend several hours doing paperwork, taking medical tests and getting counseling. She then has the surgery from a licensed physician and is given as much time as she needs to recover. She is free to come back and discuss any issues that may have arisen. All of this for about $400 (in some cities, the prices are as low as $230). Meanwhile, the clinic has to pay for staff, security, compliance with state regulations and medical equipment. Geez, Louise, you can’t get a root canal for $400.
The fact is that the doctors and staff who work at these clinics have kept their prices artificially low to make abortion accessible to as many women as possible. They talk to the women, they understand their circumstance and, well, most of them are just plain ole “softies.” I know some physicians who have gone without a paycheck because their prices are so artificially low. Indeed, there are clinics that will perform an abortion for free if they feel that the woman is in a truly desperate situation.
Everyone is entitled to make a living and the workers at the clinic deserve the same. Yes, in many clinics they are “making money,” albeit not a lot. And, while they are making these sacrifices trying to serve women, they are also living with the possibility that when they are handed that paycheck, a bomb could go off.
These doctors, nurses, counselors and others could make a better living in a safer environment.
They are to be applauded for their sacrifice.

I have worked in two abortion clinics. One of these clinics was a non-profit, and the other was not, but both offered sliding-scale fee schedules. The clinic that was NOT a non-profit had the funds to allow that sliding scale to go all the way down to $0. That clinic also sometimes would pay for out-of-towners to spend the night somewhere in town the night before or after their abortion.
Although the folks I worked for at both of these clinics were progressive and believed in workers’ rights, they never had enough to pay us a truly decent wage. In several years of work, I never had a break of longer than 15 minutes in an 8-10 hour shift. But many of us stayed because the work was so rewarding, to be able to help women through a difficult yet often empowering experience. Unfortunately, the non-profit clinic I worked at some years ago eventually closed because it just could not survive any longer. This clinic, which was open for over 30 years, lost money on each procedure that it performed because the insurance reimbursements just did not cover the cost of the abortion. I can assure anyone who believes that “abortion providers are in it for the money” that they are completely mistaken.

That is really good nformation, “Eugenia.” Thanks for chiming in. Also, thanks for all of those years of working at the clinic.
If you stick with this blog, you’ll see that I ask a lot of interesting questions that sometimes stump the pro-choicers. I hope you’ll continue to chime in and even chime in on some of the previous posts.

It is a calling for most people that do work in offices that perform abortion.
I laugh when I hear the money issue brought up. It shows the ignorance that people will mOe claims with no information.
Where is the study that supports that belief of prolifers? It o lt side tracks away from the reality that women have the right to choose.
As well the people working have the right to make a living.
Prifers are smart enought to present better arguments for their cause than thAt. . . . We’re waiting . . .

I had an abortion, the post author and comments are accurate.
no one would work like that low wage, and risk their lives, and be harrased endlessley for a meager wage.
Most of that $200-$400 goes to pay for the office and staff. Then malpractice insurance takes the rest.

You make a good point, Hilly, about the clinic/doctor having to pay malpractice insurance. Then, of course they pay a lot for building insurance because the spectre of violence is always present.
As Susan said, it is a calling for most of these people. Good for them……

I understand that women should have the right to choose, and i do understand that women who were rape dont want to raise a baby from a rape. but let me say this i was raped when i was 16 and i know it is a hard thing to get over and carring a baby from a rape would be very hard no I did not get pregant but as a mother WHY in the world would a women want to give up a innocent life someone who never did anything to them. that baby didnt rape them, that baby didnt ask to be brought into that sitution. that baby just wanted to be brought into this world and to have a fighting chance. to do something great in this world. and to be love by anyone. and i am sorry i dont agree with the rest of the people but i believe that every life should have a fighting chance, if they didnt want to raise the baby they could have gave it up for adoption. i cant believe that anyone would want to KILL a innocent life an innocent creation a wonderful and beauitful miracle i hope that other people know that there are women in this world cant have babies and would give anything to have them and if i had the money i would adopt each and every babies and kid is in adoption center and love them as my own and every kid in this world whos living on the street or in homeless shelters i would open my heart my home and my love to each and everyone of them. and thats what i think.

Thanks for chiming in, Jessica. I really appreciate your thoughts.
Every woman is different. None of them, I mean NONE of them, wants to be in a position where they have to consider abortion. That is because they know that there is something living inside of their body and that if they dont’ have the abortion, then they will have a baby. But, for millions of different reasons, these women made the sad decision to abort because they felt it was the best thing at the time.
You mentioned that, if you had the money, you would help the children born into difficult circumstances. That is a wondedrful thought and I hope you win the lottery! But, even if you offered to help one woman raise that child, it still might not be enough.
Abortion is ending some kind of “life,” however you choose to define it. I choose to trust the women who are making a difficult decision. Thanks
