Someone in the Tennessee legislature who has absolutely nothing to do has introduced an interesting bill. It would require that abortion clinics post “anti-coercion” signs in their facility. Ah, you tax dollars at work!
In Tennessee and in most states, it is alreday against the law to “coerce” a woman into having an abortion. Makes sense to me. But the author of the bill says that some women may not know about the law and suggests that the sign would simply inform women of their rights.
So, let me put it out there right away. There are money grubbing clinics run by money grubbing doctors whose offices should be shut down. This should come as no surprise. After all there are bad apples in every profession. Indeed, while we have our sleaze balls, the pro-life side has priests who have molested children and protestors who have bombed clinics and killed doctors.
When I thought about this legislation, my first reaction was that no one will read the sign. I mean, c’mon, when you sit in a doctor’s office are you reading the signs with the small print? Do you read the fine print when you see a commercial on TV or when you sign for that home equity loan? I think not.
Then I started thinking a little more…
On one hand, I think it is insulting to women to suggest that they can be “coerced,” that they are weak, that they cannot think for themselves. On the other hand, there are those who might not be that mature or educated who might be influenced by a bad abortion provider. And I’m thinking that, if they saw the sign and ultimately felt like they had been “coerced,” they might take some action against that bad doctor. On the other hand, it might encourage some frivolous lawsuits.
I dunno…this is a tough one for me.
Anyone have any thoughts out there?

Will “Crisis Pregnancy” centers have to post signs saying that they are coercive, manipulative places established to scare women into having their babies? Wouldn’t you love to see that sign posted in waiting rooms of CPCs??

I tend to agree with you, but then I think of some of those bad docs who might “persuade” a woman to have an abortion……

That’s a good point, Eleanor. I dont know if there is still a Tennessee NARAL, but I’ll call them and make the suggestion. That would be a great amendment to be offered by a pro-choice legislator…

Coerced?
Another example of abortion being cherry picked out for stupid legislation.
Are pro Life centers placing up coercion signs?
They threaten people with eternity in hell.
Good example of serious coercion.
People that stand outside offices where abortion is performed. Should they place on their signs, warnings about their coercion?
When one goes to a lawyer and is in dire need of their services, and they are handed a retainer agreement (a contract) to sign, should there be a coercion warning on it?
When a President says that a war mission is “Mission Accomplished” should the TV, place a warning coercion subtitle?
Back to medicine, what about a prescription that is non generic, coercion? When a generic exists at 1/10 the price?
Catholic Hospitals if they follow their doctrine do not deliver assisted reproductive technologies, birth control, allow a tubal ligation, allow a proper work up of ectopic pregnancy, or many other essential services to women. Should they have gigantic signs placed all over them.
Warning, Catholic Hospital, All Women BeWare, Coercion, as we cannot provide for your needs.
Well, maybe the last there should be.
The idiocy of Abortion singled out for stupid legislation is never ending.
James, can you make any sense. Support your opinion? Those comment types reveal the lack of any education behind the position.

You’re absolutely right about the crisis pregnancy centers, Lisa. They should definitely have signs. Indeed, I need to write a good blog on these centers which still advertise under “abortion services” and mislead women. Talk about coercion…
