A short while ago, the Divine Mercy Care Pharmacy opened up in Chantilly, Virginia. They proudly announced that they are “pro-life” and would not offer birth control pills, condoms and other items. Yesterday, they announced they are closing because of a lack of business.
I am not going to gloat. Instead, I want to talk about pharmacies that refuse to offer certain items because they do not support what those items represent. We’ve all heard, for example, how some pharmacies are not offering emergency contraception because they consider it immoral. In many states, they are passing so-called “conscience laws” which allow pharmacies to refuse to sell certain items.
I gotta tell you. I have absolutely no problem with these conscience laws.
Let’s say I open up a little convenience store in the town of Hartsfield, Montana (Pop: 1,200). I am gonna sell the usual things: groceries, newspapers, those nice smelly things that you can hang on your rear view mirror. But I don’t want to sell cigarettes. Sure, I could make a nice profit if I did, but, darn it, I do not want in any way to be part of the spread of lung cancer in this country. So, I’m gonna make a statement and tell folks to drive down to Pete’s Diner and get your cigarettes there.
Or say the Grand Dragon of the local KKK comes walking in. He is dressed in full KKK regalia, looks like he’s going to the monthly meeting with the boys. He wants to buy a few donuts for the Board of Directors. Well, darn it, I just don’t want to sell my stuff to his kind. I refuse to take his money.
What am I missing here?
I am pro-choice and think that contraception should be as available as possible. But if a pharmacist is pro-life and the thought of even handling that packet of birth control pills is repulsive to him, then why should he be forced to offer them?
Now, if a woman goes to a hospital for an abortion and a nurse refuses to help, I have more of a problem with that one because that woman might not have any other options. That’s a tougher one for me.
But the Grand Dragon can go down the street and get his donuts elsewhere.

I wonder, they refuse to sell birth control because they say to be pro-life, but if birth control do not allow women to get pregnant, how come that is a pro-life thing??? I don’t get it! And now they run out of business… DUMMIES… I will help them a little bit… birth control pills + women taking it = no ABORTION… duhhh
Why is so hard for people to be rational about such a simple subject…
They are so pro-life but they probably did sell cigarrets and alcohol, which are in high demand even around teens now in days, and as far as i can count to 5 (we don’t need to go far than that) the statistics are high about dying off of cigarrets and alcohol, so why this people doen’t stop selling that as well??? Hummmmm let me se…. tic tac tic tac – ohhhh because that is a majority on sells and a good profit… ohhhhh i get it now they don’t sell birth control pills because they are pro-life, but somebody who is already a grown up they don’t care about they’re lifes…. SURE!!!!
Wake up people, educate your kids so there will be no need for abortion… so they won’t use drugs, cigarrets or alcohol in a matter of status of grown up… and when havingsex girls with 14, 15 years old won’t get pregnant and so they won’t need abortion… EDUCATION… OPEN CONVERSATION WITH TEENS…
When we stop putting a blind fold in our eyes and see the problem with open hearts we will be able to start a new way of living in peace!

I can’t believe John is agreeing with me!
And, Sonia, you are absolutely correct. Birth control stops abortions. DUH….. But the Catholic church is against birth control. They think that everyone will just abstain, which is a nice thought but not very practical….

Why not? It was good, except for paragraph 8. If a Catholic nurse helps to kill an innocent, unborn person, she is excommunicated. Not so if she helps to kill an innocent, born person.

Hey Pat, of course the church thinks that everybody will abstain (but they are not included right!?)
I won’t even get on the Catholic, Presbyterian or any other religion issue because this blog is not for that, i will only say that instead focusing on how much every religion person will donate to the church (in general) why they don’t focus on following what they pray; for example:
“do not :fornicate: outside of marriage, that way we won’t have problems about abortion… am i wrong???

Bernad, are you an unrecovered Catholic? Have you followed the Bristol Paliin (“No sex until I’m married” vow at 12) saga? Is there a drive in your life stronger than sex which has not given yoiu a BMI of 40-plus? I admire your principle, but I’m not going to entrust my children to your church…
BTW, beehaitcher John– you haven’t yet got back to me on the other thread about how much you’ve chipped in to support the babies you wanted born. Just saying. . .

LOL – Funny to read all the comments and to realize that either people don’t watch TV or they just don’t pay attention… at the end we uncover ourselfs behind this monitor where we can say whatever we want or wish without being recognized outside this 4 walls… have anybody watched the news where AN ADOPTIVE MOM returned the poor child!? So now just for a second step out of your pretty castle and put yourself in the little boy shoes… I BET YOU he might be thinking that he wishes to have died before he was born and under so much disappointments, so much pain, for sure the abortion for him will be a first option in case he grows to be a father someday… so PRO-LIFE people, why don’t you go to this woman’s house and explain to her that you are a pro-life and that she should NEVER have done what she did and that was horrible… let me guess, YOU PROBABLY DON’T CARE he was not an american child right!? But guess what, that child can become things that i don’t dare to say here… so that takes me back to the other posting where i told to the pro-life people to read what happens to a child that is raised with hate, or in between foster homes and now with a return label on his forehead! IS THAT FAIR??????????????
ADOPT, IF YOU DON’T LIKE SEND IT BACK – 30 DAYS WARRANTY!!!!

Well, a “beehaitcher” is a baby helper! I guess I judged you wrong, if you haven’t pledged anything of the $180,000+ it takes to get a kid successfully through to the age of 18. Personally, I’d rather use the money on a Lamborghini than on those little bustards.
However, I’ll keep referring to you as a beehaitcher every time you remind me that I’m a kayhaitcher. No sense in just one of us being wrong!

Sonia, we’ve had two cases in my state where the adopted kid– almost from birth for both of them– killed one or both of their adoptive parents. In one, the young man killed his father, a pillar of the community (being of the dad’s generation and knowing his type, I think he deserved at the very least a kneecapping). In the other, the girl talked her boyfriend into doing it. I remember he got the dad, and I think he got the mom as well.
But, Sonia, you’ll get that silly muddle out of your mind by repeating, “ADOPTION IS AN OPTION ADOPTION IS AN OPTION ADOPTION . . .”

I know that are cases that unfortunately that happens, and i do feel for those “kids” but let’s think for a moment here, a few days ago i wrote and attached a link about what happen when a pregnancy comes to its terms after a rape, incest or some horrible situation, i don’t know of course if that was the case for those kids, but as far as i know being in foster care is no easy task! They go under a lot of bad development and the anger they feel grows in an alarming way; when you just pay attention to a feel minutes of a talk with those kids you can have a feel that they are having trouble adjusting. Of course is not a excuse, and I am not trying to excuse their acts, but if abortion is no longer legal, just an example, what will happen? The pro-lifers says that they should have the baby and put it for adoption, but all the hate that the biological mom had during her pregnancy went towards the baby, and as I said there are studies in different parts of the world that describes situation of babies that were unwanted and wanted… So instead forbidding abortion in US, make it more expensive for those who just didn’t take precaution before having sex (just an example ok) and for those cases where the girl was raped by stranger or family member, than make it more affordable… you know that when our government wants they find a way of doing it… I don’t agree of having abortion for free, that is my personal opinion, and I also don’t agree with irresponsibility of women that have the option of an abortion and so for that do not care about preventing…
I can be wrong of course, all of us can be wrong sometimes…

Well, so-called “pro-lifers” have been known to call them “unborn angels,” which implies that they have a potential to fly, just like baby bustards. I thought the analogy apt.

So-called ‘pro-lifers’ could benefit from reading Alice Miller’s “For Your Own Good: Hidden Cruelty in Child-Rearing,” which goes into great detail about what Sonia touches on: How children for 300 years of German culture were abused and manipulated in order to make them “good.” The neuroses they developed were so great that they had to somehow work them out. As parents in their own turn, society gave them permission to dump all their rage and work out all their issues on their own offspring. And of course when Nazism came along, then the government gave them permission to work out their psychological problems on those they defined as “sub-humans.”
The way they raged against Jews, Romany and Poles (among others) matches in its intensity at times the rage so-called “pro-lifers” exercise against pregnant women and our medical institutions. It leads one to believe that those people are working out their own issues and neuroses. If that’s the case, then it explains why they can’t care for real human life as much as they say they care for the fetus.

I think to the original point of the post.
A pharmacist is a licensed health care professional.
They are different than other kinds of occupations. They have a special license under rule of law, and oath. They must abide by it, or give up the license, or it will be taken away.
They are mandated by their license to perform competently. There is no wiggle room for their own moral objection or injection in others medical privacy.
If they want moral objections, than they need to choose other professions with that luxury.

As well,
It was sort of dumb about the Birth Control Pill thing. It is used for so many other things besides birth control, they were also denying treatment for many other medical problems that the person often has no desire or need for birth control.
