I first want to apologize for being incommunicado for the last five days. My spouse and I slipped out of town to spend some “quality time” together. We actually had a wonderful time not talking about the kids or about our mortgage payment. Geez, I don’t even recall having one serious argument!
And now I’m back in the Washington, D.C. area and all anyone is talking about here is the upcoming election. You just can’t avoid all of the debates, the talking heads on the cable shows, the campaign commercials and the political predictions. Of course, the group that is probably getting the most attention is the now-famous “Tea Party.” I’ve written about these folks before. I’ve talked about how I really have no idea what they want and what they would do if they got elected. All I can gather is that they are angry at everyone and they think it’s time to “clean house.” Well, that sounds all well and good and it is a very simple phrase that appeals to a lot of folks in this country who are too lazy to think about the real issues that confront our nation. Still, there are enough yahoos in the good ole USA that some of these Tea Party candidates actually have a chance of winning.
So, let’s take a minute to think about what would happen if a “Tea Partyer” is sent to Congress in January.
The first thing that he will be asked to do is to vote for the Speaker of the House (the position currently held by Nancy Pelosi). There will be two people running for that position, one nominated by the Democratic Party and one by the Republican Party. There will not be a nominee from the Tea Party, so from the very beginning this new person will have to cast their lot with one of the established parties. And, of course, they’re going to vote with the Republican Party.
Then they have to try to get on a committee that will be of great relevance to their district. If the Republican Party takes over the House of Representatives, as is predicted, the chairman of every committee will be a Republican. So, that young, brash Tea Party person, who may have spent some time during the election bashing both parties, will then have to make an appointment with the chairman of the committee they want to be on and perhaps have to explain to him why they spent the election season bashing his party. Now, won’t that be interesting?
Then the Tea Partyer will start voting. One of the most important matters they vote on first is the budget. Generally speaking, Members of Congress get to vote on two versions of a budget – one offered by the Democrats and one by the Republicans. So, the new Tea Party person will have only two options. Oh, sure, he or she can put together their own budget on behalf of himself and the maybe 3 other Tea Partyers in the House. That budget might have suggestions like cutting all federal support for public education, eliminating the Medicare program and reducing the minimum wage. The final tally on that proposal would be in the neighborhood of 4 in favor and 431 against. Now, that is really shaking up Washington!
So, what it will come down to ultimately is that these Tea Party folks will
wind up voting with the Republican Party 95 percent of the time. Oh, sure, they’ll go to the floor of the House and give a fiery speech about the “special interests” and the old ways of Washington that need to be changed. They will then make thousands of copies of that speech and mail it to their constituents to show how they are “fighting” for the common man. Their constituents won’t know that when they gave the speech there was no one else on the floor or in the galleries except for an intern or two.
They will accomplish nothing. They will vote with the Republican Party. But their constituents will have no idea. They will just be thrilled that they sent a “fighter” to Washington, D.C. to shake things up!
Is this a great country or what?

I think you’re wrong here, Pat. If those guys win, the regulars will become just like them. This is politics.
As for myself, even though I’m a liberal, I always vote against the baby killer. Or, I should say, since all of us except the dozen or so in jail are baby killers, more or less, I vote against the one who is more of a baby killer.

Don’t agree, John. The Tea Party folks will just become like the others. Indeed, the Senate nominee in Nevada, Ms Angle, said she would do thing differently. The minute she got the nomination, she hired a Wash, D.C. consulting firm to help run her campaign. Absolutely nothing will change.
Meanwhile, you’re a liberal???

Yup, give me an issue.
You’re probably right about the tees becoming more like the regs. You’ve been right about almost everything else.

You win. Give me another issue.
(Even so, this gets hairy. The theory behind no gun control is the citizen must be able to protect himself even from his own government if it goes bad. However, should a citizen, then, be able to buy a tank, or a nuclear weapon?)

i firmly believe that a two party system is bad for the US.
i am all about 3rd and even 4th parties. other western nation don’t have only two parties, and the more choices voters have, the better.
but the tea party????
i would imagine they would introduce bills for tax breaks for protesters who can misspell the most words on their signs.
tax breaks for yosemite sam mud flaps.
but imagine the scandal when there are charges of nepotism because his daddy/cousin/nephew, cletus j. padgett, who is also his campaign manager as well as yard feller, is indicted for campaign fraud when he tries to cash a check from a constituent at the piggly wiggly to buy coldbeer ( one word ).

I dont know if the two party system is “bad” for our country, Rogie. I know other countries have more than two parties, but are those countries any better off than we are? The funny thing is that there weren’t too many complaints when the economy was rocking along and stocks were through the roof. Now that things are tanking, people are looking for scapegoats. The problem is there is no one magic answer.

it’s hard to define who is better off than whom.
there are so many factors to consider, not just the economy, even though that is what people are focused on right now.
but i have always believed that a two party system limits the ability of the voters to determine the government that they want.
i definitely believe that estado unidenses need to realize that the US is not the only nation in the world, and that the rest of the world sees her differently than she sees herself.

i agree that there is no magic answer.
that is why people need to realize that when president obama took over, he had a mess to clean up.

You’re right that Obama had one mess on his hands. But people have very short memories, especially when they lose their job. Obama saved this country from going into a depression, but that’s like trying to prove a negative and it’s not sexy. I was at a congressional meeting once and we were told that we were literally within a month of a total economic collapse in this country when Obama just came in. And remember when the stock market was at about 7,000? Oy Vey

i agree 100%!
i may be against his stance on abortion ( but then again, a lot of pro-choice groups think he isn’t strong enough in his stance ), but i have no doubt that the economy would be far worse if he had not come into office.
this crisis was bound to happen because of the mess made before he was elected.
i offer intentions for him in rosary everyday.
may the god of mercies guide him.

I do not understand the people from this particular movement. They say they want the spending to stop, but stop where?
Where are we spending all that money? They cry and cry about the stimulus but that is what is keeping the economy some what in place.
I believe they are just about noise. They keep referring to the founding fathers and what would they do. Please be real, this is not the 1700’s.

You’re right, Madeline. People want better gov’t services, better response time, etc., but they want to “cut government.” It’s like the folks who decry “socialism” but they sure as heck are going to take their Medicare and cash their Social Security checks!!

exactly!
but it is for medicare and social security, and other social services that we pay taxes to begin with.
times are hard right now for everyone.
i don’t mind tightening my belt a little more to help with social services for those who need them.
that doesn’t mean that i’m a socialist. it means that the world doesn’t revolve around me.

Did you notice, Lorraine, that yesterday the “Our Rent is too high” guy acknowledged that he is paying only $800 a month to rent??? That is an outrageously low rent for NYC.
