Since we are celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King weekend….
A short while ago, Republican Congressman Trent Franks announced that he would soon introduce legislation that would, among other things, prohibit women from having an abortion if it was because of the child’s race. The bill is called – take a deep breath – the “Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act of 2011.” Not sure why he didn’t throw in the name of Francis Scott Key, but that’s between him and his maker.
Franks noted that abortion is the greatest cause of death of African Americans and he added that this “will be the civil rights struggle that will define our generation.” What a guy! Then, the ever-present “Concerned Women for America” chimed in saying “it is horrific that in America today babies are being killed based on their race…” Finally, and here’s the real kicker, Pat Mahoney, another anti-abortion leader, added “you can walk into a clinic and get an abortion if you find out your child is African American.” Think about that statement for a second.
The facts: according to the pro-choice Alan Guttmacher Institute, the abortion rate for black women is almost five times that for white women and for Hispanics. I don’t know why that is true, but it is. And, of course, our goal is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies amongst all races.
But, the first problem with this legislation is that it makes a big assumption (something the anti-abortion advocates do a lot because they have never been inside a clinic). It assumes that when women are counseled before the abortion, they are asked why they are having it. That ain’t the case folks. Unless the woman brings the issue up herself, the doctor does not know why the woman is aborting. Yes, if a woman volunteers that she is aborting because the fetus is black, then the doctor will be prohibited from performing the abortion. But, sorry Mr. Franks, but you ain’t gonna “save any babies” because the woman, now aware of the law, will simply go to a different clinic and just not share the reason why she is aborting.
Mr. Franks and others like to suggest that abortion clinics are “targeting” the black community and engaging in “black genocide.”
Puleeeze.
The people who own and run abortion facilities are trying to help women. At the same time they are running – dare I say it – a business. They incorporate, they pay taxes, they hire people, they buy equipment, they advertise, they do everything that the local burger place or dry cleaners does. And, if they are smart they locate their facility in a spot that has enough population to allow them to pay the bills. And some locate their facilities in predominantly black areas.
But it’s not what Mr. Franks thinks. In 2008, 63 percent of abortion clinics — defined as providers of 400 or more abortions annually — were located in predominantly white neighborhoods while 12 percent were located in neighborhoods where one-half or more of the residents are Hispanic. Only 9 percent were located in predominantly black neighborhoods. So much for the “campaign” to wipe out the black population.
And before anyone tells me how Margarget Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was out to wipe out the black race, don’t even go there. She may have made some very unfortunate comments at a time when racism was still very rampant in this country, but don’t tell me that today when a Planned Parenthood staff person goes to work, they are quoting Margaret Sanger and looking for pregnant black women in the hopes of convincing them to abort. How silly. .
No, Congressman Franks is just playing the race card with the hopes of convincing African Americans that the Republican Party cares about them.
What a bunch of horse-hockey.

How could any Republican claim with a straight face that abortion is the greatest cause of death among African Americans, that abortion is a form of black genocide? Much of the ideologically motivated actions of the Republicans arguably are direct attacks on the health and welfare of African Americans through budget cuts to TANF, Title X and WIC. And let’s not forget that we shamefully lead the world in incarceration of our black brethren or that MLK’s legacy is unfulfilled as evidenced in schools, jobs, neighborhoods and government. But I digress.
Let’s take one example. Look at the House of Representative’s basic mathematical lunacy to strike all funding for Title X, funding for family planning. The Guttmacher Institute found that “unintended pregnancy costs U.S. taxpayers roughly $11 billion each year” yet if funding were cut, “the already steep cost of unintended pregnancy would balloon by about 60%, to $18 billion a year.” And while “the Senate blocked the House’s move, funds for the program were eventually cut by $17 million” (Guttmacher, 2012).
Undoubtedly generalizing, I’d argue that Republicans like to stand on their ideological soap box to wave the anti abortion flag and cry black genocide rather than worry about the real lives of born African Americans. Let’s face it, abortion is an ideologically useful rhetorical device for Republicans. Abortion is about certain and immediate death of a few cells. Food insecurities, incarceration, hunger, homelessness, and unintended pregnancies can be the slow death of accummulated indignities foisted upon the marginalized and neglected by politicians’ and corporate persons’ greed.

i find it VERY confusing that so called pro-life politicos are so quick to cut the funding that many families need to properly raise their children.
it is contradictory to oppose abortion and then turn around and eliminate the programs that will help lower income families to choose life for babies.

Not disagreeing with you at all, but as I fiihensd reading this, my mind turned to that oft-overused phrase What Would Jesus Do and it occurred to me that I really don’t know what he would do. The Romans were probably 10x worse than the Chinese, and were not above an atrocity or two to get the day started, but you never hear about Jesus picketing Pilate or anything. Was his method (surely more effective) to work from the other side in, by sharing his promise of eternity with the people and letting them provide the pressure?Interesting

Nowadays, it’s like no one thinks about an issue. Just about every friggin organization now “rates” the members of Congress based on their votes. The higher the rating, i.e., the more you agree with them, the more likely it is that you’ll get money from them. Of course, every member now strives to get the “perfect” score so they can get the maximum $5,000. It’s really as if the interest groups – all of them – are running the show….
Indeed, I remember years ago perfectly pro-choice Congressman Jim Moran actually voted to ban the “Partial birth abortion” procedure. The next year, NARAL didn’t give him any money. They forgot that he had actually run pro-choice commercials when he first ran for congress. Hmmmmmm….I hear a blog coming on!

We think the Pro-life argument can appear to be disingenuous if the only concern is to simply end abortions without responding to the broader needs of health care and education for black communities. I’d ask any prolifer who foolishly thinks abortion clinics have a marketing plan that reads “Black Genocide” to remember a few ugly facts.
Whites have long held myths about black sexual licentiousness. Law professor Dorothy Roberts writes about blacks being treated more like animals who “didn’t have the intellect to control their bodily drive” and who were in need of regulation for “such things as family caps for welfare recipients, forced sterilization, and the distribution of risky birth-control medicines such as Norplant and Depo-Provera to poor black women” to control their population.
The reality is that whites judge African Americans. And now white prolifers, like Trent Franks, are sitting in judgment again, sitting on a throne of self-proclaimed intellectual and moral superiority to warn the unwitting black population about black genocide.
What a bunch of horse-hockey, indeed.

My good friend Pat Richards of “abortion.ws” addresses one of our charges – legal child killing is African-American genocide. Of course Pat denies it but look at what he writes:
The facts: according to the pro-choice Alan Guttmacher Institute, the abortion rate for black women is almost five times that for white women and for Hispanics. I don’t know why that is true, but it is.
In other words, “Sure, it’s black genocide; we just don’t know why.”
Here are seven pro-death denials listed according to their frequency of use: 1) A young person is not killed in an abortion, 2) The young person who is slowly pulled apart feels no pain, 3) Legal abortion is not black genocide, 4) Some people kill others not for money but out of the goodness of their hearts, 5) Killing someone is humane because it saves her from an unhappy life, 6) After Roe the “back-alley abortion” did not move to the front of the alley, and 7) Our economic plight has nothing to do with the fact that we kill each other.
There are eight more. Can you name them?
To send money to the federal Prisoners, those with eight digits after their names, make out a postal money order to the Prisoner’s name and number. Then send it to Federal Bureau of Prisons, PO Box 474701, Des Moines, Iowa 50947-0001.

To much stuff to respond to at once, John! As for the term “black genocide,” I did cite the statistics. There’s no denying them. But, to me, the term “genocide” means that, like the Nazis, someone is out to wipe out an entire race (Jews). The abortion doctors that I know are not out to “wipe out” any race. They sit there, the women – including the black women – call the clinic and make the appointments in the desire of terminating THEIR pregnancy or to use John’s terminology, to “kill THEIR baby.” The docs dont hang out on the street corners encouraging folks to come in for the casual abortion.

from Summit Centers on Roe v Wade anniversary:
“We know that women have always chosen abortion when they feel they cannot have a baby.We know that most women choosing abortion are mothers struggling to house and feed their current children. We know that women choose abortion because their health depends on it. We know that women choose abortion because working wages and child care options are often impossible. We know that women choose abortion because of unsupportive and/or abusive partners. We know that women choose abortion responsibly. We know that women choose abortion, because naturally and instinctually, they have always been the bearers of life. We know that women are the only ones who can truly know when it is time to bring new life into the world.”
And when the word “women” is used, it means black or white, poor or rich, educated or not, married or single, religious or not….no genocide, folks. Just good women who know what is right for them and their lives.

At one time in the U.S., even ardent left-leaners like Jesse Jackson and the Black Panthers warned America about it.
But as the years went by and money exchanged hands, the issue was quietly forgotten.
Now viral filmmaker Molotov Mitchell is tearing the lid off what he calls “one of the most scandalous cover-ups in U.S. history,” the allegation that abortion provider Planned Parenthood has from its inception targeted black Americans for extinction.
Mitchell and the staff of Illuminati Pictures have created the explosive and controversial new film, “Gates of Hell,” an effort born out the desire to reengage America in the debate over life and death.
“If it is indeed true that the black community is being targeted for extinction today, this is like major political thriller stuff,” Mitchell told WND in an exclusive interview. “The challenge was how to communicate what’s going on without preaching to the choir, like 99.9 percent of the movies that deal with the pro-life position. The black genocide angle has not been really explored in an entertaining way. No one has seen the potential for an entertaining, thrilling movie.”
But that potential is exactly what prompted Mitchell to make “Gates of Hell.”
“Whether it is true or not – and it is true – everybody should look into it,” Mitchell told WND. “If indeed, the black genocide directive of Planned Parenthood is true, then it is one of the most scandalous political cover-ups in American history, so it makes great material for a movie.”
Mitchell points to Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger’s views on race, her work on the Negro Project and mounting evidence that abortion clinics are disproportionately distributed among black and minority communities as evidence of an underlying conspiracy. At one time, Mitchell points out, black rights leaders were at the forefront of sounding the alarm over abortion’s “racist” agenda.
“Originally, when Roe vs. Wade hit the scene, the Black Panthers and Jesse Jackson said [abortion] was ‘genocide,’” Mitchell said, quoting a Jet magazine interview with Jackson in 1973. “Jackson said, ‘If it is growing, it is living.’ He had a very strong pro-life position. Of course, that’s before Planned Parenthood started cutting him checks. Then, all of a sudden, a ‘woman’s right to choose’ became a fundamental, civil right.”
The bold and provocative “Gates of Hell,” however, has already been met with scathing controversy.
Dr. Gerard Nadal, for example, wrote a shocked editorial at LifeNews.com, worried that the film will cause young black men to actually seek revenge on abortion doctors, calling “Gates of Hell” a “vigilante apologia.”
“I genuinely fear that it will whip up young black men and lead some to violence,” Nadal writes. “I don’t want this film to ever see the light of day. Its very premise is antithetical to the pro-life movement.”
He continued, “I’ve seen enough in these trailers to give it two thumbs down. This is one baby that needs to be strangled in its bassinet.”
Mitchell responded, “I was pretty stunned to hear not only that strong of a criticism about a film Dr. Nadal had not even seen, but also the terrible analogy of strangling a baby, used by a pro-lifer to explain his disdain for a film he had not even seen.
“The trailer is, of course, shocking and provocative,” Mitchell said. “That’s what trailers are supposed to be.”
Mitchell also responded to claims the film would encourage violence.
“No, I’m not espousing the murder of anybody,” Mitchell told WND. “The film is not a call to arms; it’s a political thriller. The topic of black genocide, the cover-up, the conspiracy – we were shooting for (pun intended) great art, great entertainment.
“I don’t believe that people will walk away from this show thinking that it’s OK to kill abortionists,” he continued. “People could make the same argument based on an episode of TV’s ’24,’ where Jack Bauer is chasing an Islamic bomber, and when he’s talking to Bauer, he explains why he did it and he gives some reasonable-sounding explanation for why he felt he was defending his nation. It doesn’t mean ’24′ was espousing suicide bombing because it shows more than one side of the story; it’s simply good story telling.”
Besides, Mitchell told WND, he believes the abortion argument in America has grown entrenched and “stale,” in need of some intentional stirring of the pot.
“This film is not intended to be didactic,” he explained. “We designed this film with the hope that people would debate it for hours after they watched it with their friends. We’ve discovered that even with people who have just screened the film, it has dramatically shifted their way of thinking.
“For example, one film producer watched it with his fiancée, and they were both pro-life before watching it,” Mitchell continued. “He absolutely loved the film, and she absolutely hated it. And for several hours after the film all they did was debate and argue. He admitted that both of them had never thought of several things the way they were presented in the film and it caused them to rethink all kinds of things. Eventually, his fiancée came around; he won her over. But even if he hadn’t, the goal is the argument itself.
“There really isn’t much discussion about the abortion issue in America today. It seems people have drawn their lines, they have dug their trenches and they just give each other the evil eye across no man’s land,” Mitchell said. “This film just runs right across the middle of no man’s land and causes all kinds of havoc, and that’s the point – to get people up and out of those trenches and thinking and, hopefully, fighting.”
