Ole Randall Terry just can’t avoid the spotlight.
As many of you know, Terry was the founder and leader of Operation Rescue which for years literally struck terror in the hearts of abortion providers everywhere. He first attracted national attention in 1991 when he organized the “Summer of Mercy,” which brought thousands of anti-abortion advocates to Wichita, Kansas where they set up camp right in front of the late Doctor George Tiller’s clinic. Tiller and his staff courageously endured the onslaught but Terry got his headlines and raised a significant amount of money.
Then, in the years that followed, it seemed that several times each year his troops would descend on another abortion provider, blocking access to clinics, terrorizing staff and patients and garnering even more headlines. But I have to give him credit. As a staff person at the National Coalition of Abortion Providers, the minute we heard him announce that he was targeting yet another abortion clinic, we went into high alert. Led by staff from the Fund for a Feminist Majority, help was sent to the clinic to prepare staff for the mayhem that was on its way.
The irony is that Terry and his crew got so out of hand that the Congress ultimately passed the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, which practically shut down Terry’s operations. Also, to make matters worse, Terry started veering off message a little, targeting homosexuals and Muslims. Then, a series of personal indignities surfaced. We learned that his son was gay, his daughter had sex outside of marriage and became pregnant. She had a miscarriage and is reportedly no longer welcome in his home. Then his other daughter had two children outside of wedlock and became a Muslim. Finally, Terry himself was ultimately censured by his church after admitting that he had committed adultery.
Okay, now pick yourself up off the floor and stop laughing.
And now, guess what, Terry is back in the news! Yup – he is running for President of the United States. If you can believe it, he is actually “challenging” the most “pro-abortion President in U.S. history”, Barack Obama, in the Democratic primaries. Yeah, I can’t figure that one out either. Indeed, a few weeks ago I was channel surfing and happened upon a “debate” featuring the “lesser known Democratic candidates” for president. Very kooky stuff. And Terry was actually the most articulate of the group but the problem was that I couldn’t take my eyes off the candidate sitting next to him because he was wearing a big boot on his head and practically spoke in tongues. At the end of the debate, the boot head sprinkled “fairy dust” all over Terry.
But Terry is looking to make more news. He is currently trying to raise money to show a graphic anti-abortion ad to be played during the Super Bowl. He is exploiting an FCC rules that prohibits censorship of “political” ads within 45 days of a primary. The ad will feature the usual dubious photos of alleged aborted fetuses. And, as Terry well knows himself, the ads will have no impact and, in fact, will cause more people to turn against him and his cause. But that’s okay because this is not about the cause, it’s all about Randall Terry.

he is opposed to legalized abortion and from what i see, that is what we agree upon.
but he is proposing laws and penalties?
i couldn’t begin to fathom such things.
she is already facing an unwanted pregnancy. as if that isn’t bad enough, if she chose to have an abortion, she would face that as well. and he is talking about liabilities and penalties?
i simply can’t fathom that.
i don’t have all of the answers, and i’m not going to pretend that i do.
but i do know that laws didn’t stop abortions before it was legal, but helping to change the factors that makes someone seek an abortion helped to stop abortions before it was legal and it helps now.

Randy Randy is only running for Prez so he can get graphic anti-abortion ads on TV. His relationship with his first wife and children demonstrate even better than John Dinkle how stultified the aborticentrist’s view of human life is…
Considering he committed serial adultery to an extent Newt Gingrich would envy, you would think he’d allow his daughters some slack. He has some real hang-ups about human sexuality.

Our nation took a turn down the path of celebrity worshipping beginning at the turn on the 20th century, first with film stars then with any thing Hollywood and media churned out. It’s not that different for the likes of Randall Terry, Troy Newman, Fr. Frank Pavone, Fr. Alberto Cutie or Fr. Corapi. They have their star-gazer followers, financial largesse, media portfolios complete with staged photo ops, online presence, and skeletons in their closet. All desperate men succumbing to the very sins they claim to renounce.

But, yeah, these guys love it. In fact, I noticed that Pavone has a LinkedIn page and twits or tweets or whatever. Then there were folks like Guy Condon, who ran the Carenet Clinics who really was trying to help women in need, with no publicity. Unfortunatel;y, he was killed in a car accident…

I agree with you “Roggie”!! But I also believe that “old R.T.” has/had
a “god complex”!! So when the people that “he professes” to love didn’t turn out the way that “he” wanted…”he” had to take “a time out” to find a new family!!…Does the name”Terry Schiavo” mean anything to anyone?
R.T. was out of site for awhile..perhaps “licking his wounds” since his family didn’t turn out the way R.T. told them too!! So “he” had to take time to find a new one..family…that is!! and.. a new “cause”..or a “new branch of the cause”!! Enter the “Terry Schiavo” case!!
So once again “he” is trying to interfere in “our private family business”…

I think Pavone also got involved with Schiavo as well. But, you know, there are “media whores” like that on all sides of this or any other issue. I mean, I love what Jesse Jackson stands for but it seem that everytime there is an issue of concern to African Americans, he’s right there behind the camera. Then there is Sen Charles Schumer who also has not met a camera he doesn’t love…

And when the guy sprinkled fairy dust on him, Terry just sat that, trying to figure out how to react. It was just a total joke…

I’ve had lots of conversations with Father Pavone and he’s a tough one to read. He comes across in person as a listener and caring, but then he gets on the stump and can get rather crazy/mean spirited. Then, that gets back to the old question about whether or not it does any good to talk to the other side.

When I interviewed him a few years ago, I asked him to elaborate on his view, a view that parallels Santorum’s, about the woman who was pregnant as a consequence of rape. I personally could not wrap my head around his belief that a woman should carry the pregnancy to term. His explanation sounded so sincere, so polished, so rehearsed. All I could think of is how very little he seemed to comprehend of the violence inflicted on a woman and the subsequent emotional trauma. I imagine his response, albeit a canned response, is what he believes. But there are those who believe in transubstantiation too.

In the culture of celebrity, preachers like Pavone, Newman and Randall are more persona than person, more icon than individuals. Faithful fans encounter their preacher celebrity much the way Hollywood fans, beginning with identification, leading to excitement and ending with documentation of the encounter, often with photo opportunities and autographs of their books. There is something superhuman, sacred and transcendent about these celebrities and to the production and consumption of their fame.
But should there be a transgression, moral, legal and/or financial, these religious celebrities are reduced to mere mortals pandering to their audience to feel indignation, sympathy, anger or love.
