Abortion. It’s not a dirty word. If a woman doesn’t want to be pregnant, she should not, under any circumstances, be unduly burdened to carry the pregnancy to term. And unruly strangers should never victimize women with their antediluvian meanness, pathological prudishness, and morality mongering.
Antediluvian Meanness
In 2012, it is beyond comprehension how a radical fringe is allowed to promote an agenda based on primeval, misogynist ideology. In locales around the nation, women are treated to heartless invectives just because they choose to enter a clinic. A woman with an appointment shouldn’t be treated with the unmitigated nastiness that is so common outside abortion clinics.
So-called sidewalk counselors claim they offer help but what they really specialize in is unbridled callousness toward women and their companions. More commonly called protesters, these mean-spirited folks claim they know what is best for a woman. The use lines like “you know you’re killing yourself and your child” or “do the right thing and don’t be so selfish” or, my favorite (thanks to a particularly nasty woman nicknamed the Walrus), “they’re gonna turn your baby into road-kill” or screaming across a large parking lot to a woman entereing the clinic door, “You’re baby is gonna haunt you at night.”
Like I said, abortion is not a dirty word. Some cruel folks just like to make it seem like it is.
Pathological Prudishness
Sex is natural. It’s fun. Not to be overly religious, but sexuality is a God-given gift to be used as we humans feel is right. But there are those among the unruly strangers (and now amongst some of the nation’s legislators) who would likely be happy if they could put chastity belts on every female who has become of age.
Arguing against contraception, against sex before marriage (because of their heteronormativity), and against sex unless it is for procreation. But sex for the majority is part of everyday living. It’s not some filthy necessity to get over, not some lascivious activity of perverts and certainly not wrong/abnormal/disgusting. Of course, any discussion of sex by yourself, called masturbation, would curl their toes because that’s a sin.
Morality
And speaking of sin, these protesters know all about morality. They quote from their litany of spiritual mumbo jumbo and kiss their rosary beads, saying “In the name of the Father” then launch a verbal grenade at a women with the same breath. They claim abortion is murder. They tell women God is offended by abortion.
A particularly vitriolic man named Gerry told a woman whose daughter was raped and pregnant, “If she got pregnant, it was God’s will.” Another protester lied to a woman entering the clinic when she said, “Don’t go in there. My best friend died there last week.” No one had died, ever. What happened to the stuff about not lying? Another protester, mocked for her undulations nicknamed the pee pee dance, loved to get into women’s face and ask all manner of personal questions about her physical body or talk about rolling around in the sheets–in front of everyone standing outside. While I’m aware that these protesters think they are morally upright citizens, I argue that their behavior is immoral. Their mere presence terrifies women. Their signs disgust them. And their words immeasurably and negatively impact how women feel about them. And, yet, the protesters are blinded by either their faith or delusions or both.
As evidenced by the number of abortions in the United States, abortion is the right option for women who face an unplanned pregnancy. However, recognizing that abortion is not for everyone, that adoption is the right choice for some women while parenting is the right choice for others, the bigger point is this: It’s a woman’s choice. Period.

Me either. I know it’s an emotionally charged event for women but so is having a hysterectomy or a mastectomy. It’s the kooky anti abortion folks who make it into WWIII or some hairy monster genocide.

You know it! It’s not the women who have had abortions who are out there railing against women. Kooky is a good word.

Good piece! I will add that even many pro-choicers feed the abortion stigma by shying away from the “A” word. The word “choice” does not cut it anymore, especially with the younger crowd. The woman’s right to choose has three results and the most controversial one, of course, is abortion. But we are afraid to use the word, although we just love talking about childbirth and adoption. Abortion is okay, folks. Indeed, abortion saves lives!!!!

This week as I was sitting down to help my “9” y/o granddaughter with her homework, the TV was still on the Dr Phil show…(before I could turn it off!) Dr Phil said tell me about the “3” abortions you had!?!?! My little one said what is “abortion” Yaya!?! I heard that word on the news a bunch!!
With an internal gasp! (only because I thought their mother would talk with them about the “A” word initially LOL) I said well… you know sometimes a woman gets pregnant accidentally! or she is pregnant and there is a problem with the way the pregnancy is growing or the woman becomes very sick and the Dr says that she can NOT stay pregnant!! There is an operation called an “abortion” that the Dr can do so that she is not pregnant anymore, or not there is some Rx the Dr can give the woman so that she isn’t pregnant anymore!
My daughter just always knew what the “A” word was because I had been working at the clinic since she was about “3” y/o…so she had just always been exposed to that information and what everything meant! I am glad that the first time she asked about the “A” word she asked me!! I told her the truth…plain and simple!! Not cluttered up with a bunch of political propaganda!!
Because, after all that is what the “A” word is…plain and simple…the “A” word is a surgical/medical procedure done to stop a pregnancy from growing…to save a woman’s life…due to medical reasons!! Those reasons being NO one’s business other than the woman!!
Thanks, Dr. Phil~~

Holy moly! Kate Ranieri writes the essay today (3/11) for the abortion.ws blog (thank you, Mel), the first time someone other than Pat Richards has done that, and other than on a Monday too. Kate’s topic is her usual: we prolife activists are nasty individuals.
I have to believe that Elena features Kate because she wants to set off her star, Pat. And set him off Kate does — with her personal attacks (“a particularly evil woman,” “mean-spirited folks,” “Skillet Face,” etc.), her silliness (“As evidenced by the number of abortions in the United States, abortion is the right option for women . . .,” etc.) her adolescence (“Sex is natural, it’s natural, it’s fun,” etc.) her redundancy (“Sex is natural, it’s natural, it’s fun,” etc.), her lying (“No one had died, ever,” [in the mill], etc.), and her superficiality.
It’s a shame that none of Pat’s gifts have rubbed off on Kate.

John Dunkle will now tell us about feral children! He will also explain why it’s okay to abandon an unwanted dog in a parking lot.
This is to say that like the other self-proclaimed “pro-lifers” he doesn’t have a clue about what it takes to keep a life from being inhuman, and he doesn’t want to know.
Of course, if it were a feral fetus or a fetal puppy, he’d be all over the case.

I hear Todd Stave, Voice for Choice, has a national organization of volunteers who are fed up with the prolife tactics. His counter-tactics will mirror those of the antis including showing the faces of those anti abortion folks and their videos, handouts, and pamphlets they promote. You know, let the whole world see how Sr. Julia behaves in Aurora IL or how Flip Benham in NC bellows at women or how Mr. and Mrs. Murray harass women in a southern Texas town as they attempt to walk to the clinic’s front door or how crazy Mary in Louisville KY uses her bible as a bully pulpit to scare women.
As the stuff roles in, America will finally see these folks for who they really are and shudder in disgust. The evidence will be everywhere.

actually amy, VOC doesn’t treat hateful protesters the same way as their victims are treated.
the VOC site states that when contacting them, members are to be polite and simply let them know that while their right to peaceful assembly is respected and appreciated, their abusive tactics are unacceptable.
VOC lets the abusers know that their behavior will not be tolerated, but takes the high road while doing it.

i agree.
i also agree that such behavior is immoral.
while the hatred that motivates them is powerful, love is a much more powerful as well as effective motivation.

They are not “retards,” Kirstan. They are fixated on abortion because it provides them a way to wage an allegorical battle against their own death. That battle is so important for them they cannot afford to be distracted by the realities of child development, family dynamics and the need to care for real human life. They are scared and desperate. If they lose their aborticentrism, they lose hope of getting any assurance of eternal life. They can’t let go; it’s too risky.
