If the barrage of fundraising letters I am getting is any indication, there are a number of serious issues facing the pro-choice movement these days. Battles are raging in just about every state legislature and every solicitation for money (do they ever write to us to just tell us how things are going?) has a common theme, which is access to abortion services are being restricted.
Whether or not requiring a woman to get an ultrasound before an abortion restricts her access to abortion is a question that I cannot answer at this time. We’ll just have to wait and see. But it is no secret that the number of abortion providers/abortion clinics has decreased over the years. Of course, part of the reason why there are fewer abortion clinics is that the number of abortions has declined and an abortion clinic, like any other business, has to have a certain number of patients to pay the rent, buy supplies, pay staff, etc. If the number of people using the facility decreases, that facility may be forced to close. Indeed, in the ideal world, there would be no abortion facilities, right?
One thing that has always intrigued me when we talk about access to abortion is how our pro-choice friends bemoan the fact that fewer hospitals are performing abortions. Well, I gotta tell you that if I were counseling a woman right now, I would tell her stay as far away as possible from any hospital if she was looking for an abortion. Let me explain.
Abortion is a specialized form of medicine. It’s not like going to your local orthopedic surgeon to get a lipoma removed. In that case, you have your quick first meeting, the doc tells you it should be removed, you make your co-pay and you schedule the outpatient surgery. Two weeks later, the lipoma is gone. Wham bam, thank you ma’am.
Even though the surgery is just as simple as having a lipoma removed, a woman seeking an abortion has a lot more to deal with – as do the staff at the abortion clinic. With variations on the theme, the women receive counseling about the abortion procedure, possible post abortion reactions and they may even delve into other more personal issues if the woman is so inclined. Then they discuss forms of birth control that the woman might use to prevent her from coming back. Of course, the patient might also have to deal with the possibility of anti-abortion picketers outside the facility and the stress that that might add to an already stressful situation. If a woman has received the abortion pill, the staff is on call for the woman through that multi-day process.
So, abortion clinic staff and their doctors are used to dealing with women not just from the physical side but the emotional side. There is even an organization – the National Abortion Federation – that hosts annual meetings where abortion doctors discuss the provision of abortion of abortion services and how to make the experience a more comfortable one for the woman.
Now, think about your last visit to a hospital. Not very warm and fuzzy, wouldn’t you say?
And if you went in there for an abortion – assuming you found a hospital that does them – you would not be entering a comforting environment. You surely would not receive any counseling about the procedure, no discussions about how to avoid an abortion in the future, no advice on birth control. Even worse, you might be working with some staff people who are actually anti-abortion. Yes, there are conscience clauses out there, but you always run the risk of getting a nurse who is pro-life, so you know they are not going to sit there and hold your hand during the procedure. The only advantage to going to a hospital might be that there would be no protestors and you’d be in a big waiting room with others and no one would know why you are there.
But I would prefer to go to a place where there are experienced staff people who have dealt with the abortion issue from all angles – the medial and the emotional – than going into a sterile hospital where you’re basically on your own. .
The average price for an abortion at an abortion clinic is about $350. Believe me, it’s worth it.

China’s “barefoot doctors” provide preventive care services to hundreds of millions of rural inhabitants. They get paid $35 a month, and there are hundreds of thousands of them.
There’s no reason why the US shouldn’t have a similar grassroots movement to provide abortion services. The broader the base involved, the harder for a shari’a president or Congress to undo it– look at Prohibition.

You’re right, Karen. These anti-abortion types think women are stupid, that they dont know what is going on inside of their body. Indeed, I will bet you anything that many women, after seeing the ultrasound, might actually feel relieved that the fetus is not as big as they thought it might be!

Karen, it’s true that the the older black/white ultrasounds (still used by docs because they know how to read them) are not so useful as the newer 3D ultrasounds. Perhaps you (and Pat) think that women don’t change their minds???
When you see the outline of the body of the baby in the womb – head, torso, arms, legs – some women realize that it just isn’t a “blob of tissue” as they have been told; that it’s a real, living human being with a beating heart and measurable brain waves. They change their minds when they realize they are “terminating” a life. Some other women, perhaps those under the stress of a boyfriend threatening to leave them if they don’t get “rid of that thing”, choose to be blind to what they see.
With the newer 3D ultrasounds, it’s pretty hard to ignore the realities, which is why Planned Parenthood fights all legislation that attempts to require an ultrasound prior to their “counseling”.
How do I know? My wife worked in a crisis pregnancy center and counseled women both before and after abortions. Trust me, the horror stories she told me that women suffer for YEARS after an abortion ain’t pretty. It’s a real form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for which treatment is difficult. That’s why you tend to see women who have had abortions becoming activists for abortion rights. I personally believe (as does my wife) that it’s a way of coping with the PTSD grief and guilt. If I can justify to myself that what I did is right (I do this by convincing as many others as possible to do what I did), then I start to feel better. BTW, according to my wife and other CPC counselors statistical experience, over 80% of the boyfriends who promised to stay with their pregnant girlfriends if ONLY they would get “rid of that thing”, leave them within 3 months anyway. Why? You figure out that one – pretty obvious.
For the polished write-up within the PP’s website as to why to have an abortion at an abortion facility (rather than a hospital), the reality is that docs in real hospitals don’t want to contradict their Hypocratic Oath . . . at least such a way that others know about it. Some of the docs that formerly performed abortions in hospitals now do them in stand-alone abortion facilities so that they can slip in and slip out without being known. That’ why they get pretty upset when what they do becomes known to their neighbors and friends – they are ashamed of what they do, just as a women who’s had an abortion and terminated the life of another is ashamed of the decision she made.
So, then, WHY, WHY, WHY doesn’t Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers want women to have an ultrasound prior to an abortion? Let’s see . . . an abortion IS a surgical procedure, right??? Can you name ANY surgical procedures that are performed by doctors in hospitals or out-patient surgical facilities that are performed without some diagnostic imaging performed either prior to or (in rare cases) during the procedure???
Think about, say, a gall bladder removal. Would it EVER be performed without an ultrasound and perhaps an MRI? NO.
What about orthopedic surgery? Ever performed without an x-ray? NO.
How about a tumor (anywhere)? Ever done without some kind of imaging? NO
Now it’s true that the imaging is being done to help both the doctor and the patient make the best decision regarding surgery (and maybe the insurance company, too) BUT, is it so outlandish to require that before terminating the life of the defenseless, we require that the patient (mother in the case) see what she is going to “terminate”??? I don’t think that’s unreasonable and it surely isn’t an invasion of privacy any more than her disrobing for the procedure and having the abortion doctor going up her vagina to suck the brains out of the baby.
Finally, with all the hoopla about the supposed (non-abortion) services Planned Parenthood is providing to help provide healthcare for women, let me ask you this? If Adolph Hitler (a known eugenicist) were alive today and opened up an health clinic, would YOU go to him to get ANY healthcare? Let us NEVER forget that Planned Parenthood was started by an avowed racist and eugenicist – Margaret Sanger – who openly admitted (check her real publications) to wanting to create a superior race. She proposed to do so b7 eliminating those “inferior species” – citing blacks, jews, etc. True she did this in 1926 when racism was alive and well. But she never wavered from those views . . . . in 1936, 46, 56, and until her death in 1966 (after passage of the Civil Rights Act). Change the name to sound pretty and, Voila, you’ve got “Planned Parenthood”. Oh, what a lovely ring to it. Sounds so sweet for the nation’s LARGEST SINGLE ABORTION PROVIDER.
Read this quickly, cuz I’m sure it won’t last long on PP’s website. While they purport to want rights (like women’s reproductive rights via “Choice”, free speech, etc.,) they really don’t want “Choice” if that choice is to save a baby. They want “free speech” so long as it isn’t “opposing speech” – then it’s “hate speech”. I don’t think I’ve said anything at all hateful here – I’m trying to expose some either inaccurate or false statements but darkness doesn’t usually like to have light shining on it.

Using Hitler as a comparison to abortion is offensive to Jews and totally misconstrues his state-sponsored program of elimination.
Most importantly, you choose to ignore the realities of women’s lives when they are faced with an unwanted pregnancy. They don’t want the pregnancy. Period. Whether they see the fetus on the ultrasound or are forced by misgynistic, patriarchal laws to listen to the heartbeat, they Do Not Want the pregnancy. And that’s OK. It’s their decision.

It sounds to me like the reason you’re against abortion is that it makes you feel really warm and comfy believing that all children grow up loved and nurtured. If I use harsh words against there unkindly offense it pales in comparison to what they are trying to do to me.

If someone finds my words offensive as they attack my body, they are going to be offended even more, and they should reasonably expect no less from me.

The thing is, an abortion that is performed by a medical expert is better than a woman doing it herself. The issue is the child, for whatever reason, is unwanted by the carrier (woman), which means ultimately, she has the choice and nobody else. so it can either be done safely in a medical facility or in a kitchen or basement

If the pro-choice and pro-life movement today reached an historic agreement that said “abortion is killing a baby,” the number of abortions would not decrease.

Although you can’t directly take care of it, short of a surrogate pregnancy, you could be supporting the pregnant woman financially and medically during her term– to the tune of about $25,000 if she’s healthy, more if she’s not. And you could allay her fears about not being able to take care of a real child by posting $260,000 to handle all of the childrearing expenses until age 18, especially if she’s a single mom working for minimum wage.
But you’re not.
You’re just wailing that a fetus is a baby.
A baby you don’t and won’t care for.

So, how many babies are you raising, Ortega, or are you just happy to see that women are having babies that you don’t have to care for?
Like Yahweh, Allah must have a pretty unusual sense of humor to insist that women all across the Muslim world have babies that are going to suffer long and die slowly.
Of course, I suppose that it’s too much to ask that if either of them wants babies born, then either of them should care for them.
Unlike them, I believe that if I want a baby to come into the world, then it’s my responsibility to care for that child. So, how many babies are yoiu raisiing, Ortega, or are you just happy to see that women are having babies that you don’t have to care for?

Teaching at an orphanage is not as intense a caring for human life as adoting one of those children is, Ortega. It diminishes your credibility as a self-proclaimed “pro-lifer” when you tell others, “Because I teach at an orphanage, you have to be a parent,” rather than saying, “I have been adopting a child a year for the last fifteen years. If I can do that, you could more seriously consider following my example”
Notice the difference in credibilty?
So, while the notion of abortion makes you feel nauseated, that’s no reason to insist that the next child be born to grow up like Ted Bundy because you won’t take care of it. If all the so-called “pro-lifers” were more concerned about human life and not solely about abortion, you’d be out of a job at that orphanage.

As I said, Ortega, you have this image of fetuses being fully developed humans, with thought processes, self-awareness, language skills, personalities and all the other accoutrements identified with real human beings– and all of this being brought to a screeching, brutal halt through abortion.
You’d rather not have abortions happen, period. But not because you want to adopt and care for those forty orphans. You want abortions to be banned because they violate your fantasy of how a fetus being just like an orphan.
Orphans to you are cute, responsive to your ministrations, grateful for your attention– and you think of them being butchered. Orphans are not fetuses, though. Orphans still exist after you pack it up and go home for the day. Are they safe after you leave? Not necessarily.
(We had fifty orphans sue the Sisters of St. Joseph a couple of decades ago for priestly behavior inflicted on them big time– and the orphans won in the usual non-disclosure settlement. God has a sense of humor: The vacated building was used as the launch site for the weekly demonstrations of the so-called “pro-lifers” against the Planned Parenthood clinic down the street.)
If you are going to be against abortion without committing yourself to the lifelong nurture of the “precious unborn pre-human angel,” then you are against abortion for selfish reasons– you want someone to bring a child (whom you do not, will not and most likely cannot care for) simply to make you feel good. That’s aborticentrism.
If you want to join RESPONSIBLE Right to Life, then you will raise to adulthood every “unborn human” you want to “rescue.” You want to sign up?
I didn’t think so.

I selfish? selfish for whom? what is beyond your selfishness of the babies you kill? come on .. although not perfect, but they are alive! they are a child your birth!
lucky your family is not including the poor .. if not then you will never be born on earth as a parent you break your neck with the scissors while you are still in the womb ..
exactly the problem is only one: “you are too scared poor and you do not want to be bothered with the cost of your child’s life” that makes me sick .. even the wild animals would die for her .. but not with human beings like you ..

Ortega, whileI admire your passion about abortion, one thing puzzles me: you know perfectly well those children don’t have to live in an orphanage. You could adopt them. You could drop out of college, find a house, and raise just one, right now. But you don’t. You limit yourself to expressing moral judgment and outrage over abortion.
This indicates to me that you clearly don’t care for real life as much as you fear abortion; if you cared for it as much as you care about abortion, you would put aside all thought of continuing your education and you would move heaven and earth to care for each fetus you want rescued, but you limit the focus of your attention to abortion rather than the care for human life.
The graphic images you use tell me that what really motivates you is the fear of abortion, not the nurture of human life. As I’ve said, that’s aborticentrism.

Dropped out of college? are you kidding me? I am 22 years old … I do according to my ability .. and everyone did according to his ability … answer my question .. What am I doing it wrong? since yesterday you always say the adoption of adoption and adoption to me .. but once a person adopts a child you still say “how much longer you are able to adopt?”
If I and they have more ability we would do more than that .. please pray for me and those who still have a conscience to be a millionaire .. Then we will all baby care that you think deserve to be killed!
(Google image search on “abortion”) Only the mentally ill man who was sad to see the fact the murder of the babies.. and do you kill a baby that is the only way to preserve human life .. in other words: “TO MAINTAIN ALIGNMENT HUMAN LIFE then kill the babies in which if will be a burden .. kill disabled babies .. kill the poor baby ..”
Trust me .. for the sake of Alloh that my life was in his hand, abortion is not a solution for the reasons you mentioned.

Ortega, when a parent decides to give up college to stay home and take care of his/her baby, it is because the parent loves the child more than he or she loves being educated more. So, you have shown me which you love more when you decide to stay in college rather than drop out and adopt.
I would pray for you to become a millionaire, except that one woman I know is raising a full dozen adopted or foster children– and she’s doing it largely on various welfare grants. So I see no reason why you shouldn’t be just like her– or do you also value being rich over caring for a real human life?
Your problem is that you are so young you don’t have enough experience to understand what it takes to make a life human. Once you realize the need to care for a life to make it human, you will view abortion differently. Too many “rescued” fetuses face the prospect of a far slower and far more painful death for lack of care after they become real children.

History will never remember the killing of children kindly, no matter what the reasons were at the time. Germans helped the old and infirm die with dignity, well that was the reason then is there any emotion of this now, even though society is now looking at doing the same with them now, any life that can live on its own should not be killed, but then again look here in Canada where we have mid birth abortion at 9 months and a thriving stem cell harvesting industry, on a hundred years my country will be remember as worst than nazis.

Sorry, R Robin, but a fetus is only a child when the host-femal or male- says so. History much better remembers how a society treated its people, as your citation of Nazi Germany illustrates. As for Canada being remembered, you’re way off the mark. Canada will be remembered as having people who lived better, lived longer, and killed one another less than the world’s powerhouse of the time, the United States.
You can fantasize as much as you want about someone else’s fetus being a child, but until you take care of one more child than you want to, in my book you don’t speak with any credibility as one who cares for human life. Your fantasy only serves your needs, not any child’s.

It’s true, the Nazis killed all the men are flawed and unproductive as well as those who support abortion, they killed the babies who will be the burden of life.

Surely a defining characteristic of a truly civilised society will be that it protects the most vulnerable members of society which cannot defend them selves. Liberal abortion laws show a total disregard for the sanctity of human life placing the preferences and convenience of adults above the right for the unborn child not to be deliberately destroyed!! If adults chose to engage in sexual activity they should accept that there will be a chance that this will lead to the creation of human life and if they cannot cope with this they should abstain!!

As for life being human, Iain Bainbridge, see my response to R Robin in #18. I trust that you are 100% for contraception. If you aren’t, why not?
The insistence that human life begins at conception is an aborticentric fantasy.
If the pregnant host (usually a woman) does not conduct herself to ensure proper fetal development, the resulting child might be born without a potential to be fully human– its humanity will only be guaranteed either by a government which pours money into decades of medical and caretaker assistance or people who sacrifice their own priorities. If you don’t already do this yourself, you have zip for a dog in this fight.
If after the child is born the parent, society or both ignore its developmental needs (read up on feral children), it is doomed. You can prevent the next baby from becoming another Ted Bundy or Joshua Komisarovsky simply by caring properly for it in a way its parents can’t or won’t. In fact, you can become a member of RESPONSIBLE Right to Life by pledging to raise to adulthood every “unborn innocent” you want “rescued.”
Not going to? I didn’t think so. Not a single self-proclaimed “pro-lifer” ever has, and I can’t figure out why.
