I practically peed in my pants when I heard this one.
Recently, the Governor of the great state of Mississippi, Phil Bryant, was asked about a new law he just signed that would require all doctors who perform abortions to be board-certified OB-GYNs and have admitting privileges at a local hospital. It could ultimate force the only clinic in the state to shut down.
When asked about the law, he started ranting about abortion and, at one point, he actually said the following about people who run or work at abortion clinics: “…their one mission in life is to abort children, is to kill children in the womb.”
I’m not sure where to start with this one. My first reaction was does this guy think that abortion doctors and staff have all gotten together and adopted a mission statement which declares that “our goal is to abort children, to seek out those little fetuses and tie the woman down to the table and get that kid and kill it. We vow that nothing will detract us from our mission!”
Does this dork – an actual governor of an actual state in these United States of America – really believe that abortion providers wake up in the morning with this “mission” on their mind? For gosh’s sakes, Gov, get real.
I’ll let you in on a not so very secret. When these doctors and staff are driving to their clinic, they are generally thinking of one thing. They are thinking about how they are going to help a number of women that day – women who have sought out their services, women who if they have to will literally climb over hundreds of abortion protestors who are trying to block them from getting into the abortion clinic. They are thinking of the women who will travel hundreds of miles to find that clinic and who will walk in the front door aware that at any moment, they could be blown up. That’s the real mission of these doctors and their courageous staff. They are not thinking about killing “children in the womb.”
Now, if the Governor is insinuating that the doctors are in it for the money, that they want to “kill children” to make the big bucks, well, I’ve written before. The fact is that abortion clinics are also businesses. Many years ago, after abortion was legalized, a number of doctors identified a dramatic need in this country, i.e., hundreds and thousands of women who wanted a legal abortion. So, they set up abortion clinics – and that cost money. Then, lo and behold, they learned that it also took money to operate the clinic! So, they determined that if they wanted to remain available to those women, they had to charge a fee for their service. But, somewhere along the line, some anti-abortion advocates came up with the notion that these services should have been performed for free and it gave them yet another bumper sticker line, that abortion doctors were “making money off of dead babies.”
I could go on and on. But I grow weary of idiots, yes, idiots like this Governor who try to use their position of power and responsibility to stir things up. And, of course, when the next abortion doctor is killed, the Governor will avoid the questions and blame it on someone else.
Shame on you, Governor.

Mississippi governor Phil Bryant has Pat all upset over there on abortion.ws blog: “I could go on and on. But I grow weary of idiots, yes, idiots like this Governor who try to use their position of power and responsibility to stir things up. And, of course, when the next abortion doctor is killed, the Governor will avoid the questions and blame it on someone else.”
Here’s what Phil said that really got to Pat: “When asked about the law, he started ranting about abortion and, at one point, he actually said the following about people who run or work at abortion clinics: ‘…their one mission in life is to abort children, is to kill children in the womb’.”
Both guys are wrong. Pat’s wrong for thinking that those who “use their position of power and responsibility to sir things up” will be responsible when the next baby killer is himself knocked off. Nah, the responsible person will be someone like me who says abortion is murder but doesn’t act that way. There will always be someone who hears that, believes it, and does act that way. She might come along only about once every five years, but believe me she will appear.
Phil’s wrong too. I suppose there might be some killer or killers’ helper out there whose “one mission in life is to” kill people, but I’ve never met her or him. And I’ve met many. Let’s start with Bill Baird. In the early ‘70s we used to talk on the phone for hours. I liked the guy – enemy #1 but I got to like him anyway! Most recently was Erich Schmidt. I really got to like him; my wife and I even visited at his beautiful hundred acre farm home near here. And there were others in between.
So, nah again, it’s Satan’s mission to kill people in the womb and he’ll use anybody he can to accomplish that mission, and lots of us call ourselves prolife.
But here’s the bizarre part: Pat’s all upset because about once every five years a serial killer goes down. Meanwhile, every day, thousands like his innocent victims are tortured to death.

Bill Baird…now you are showing your age “Dunkle” that is really a “voice from the past!!” Nice man… that did a lot for women’s rights helped make trying to see that abortion became a “SAFE & LEGAL” procedure!! Also that “birth control” is/was NOT a “dirty word”!! Bill Baird was a very early pioneer in this fight…so that a women can decide what happens in her private reproductive life…
The “National Coalition of Abortion Providers” had a beautiful “Gala” in Washington, DC in the mid 90’s the exact date escapes me (Pat can tell us the date!) We celebrated all the people that deserved to be recognized for the stand that they took to make sure that abortion will always remain “SAFE & LEGAL” !! Bill Baird was one of those people…”Dunkle” are you saying that Bill was one of your friends??
I know Bill had to go “slumming around” from time to time!!

I am a Consultant Psychiatrist for Children who have a learning diabsility working in the West Midlands in a community service and also a specialised in-patient unit for adolescents. I see children who have a learning diabsility and psychiatric, behavioural or emotional problems. 50% of children with a learning diabsility have behavioural problems. Many also have autism. Many of the children who end up being admitted have received either no, or very poor psychiatric services locally and as a result have major problems often leading to family breakdown. There are still many areas where they are not seen in CAMHS despite recent clear guidance. From my community service I see the clear advantage in early input and multi-disciplinary support for families (from nursing, psychology, psychiatry, SALT and OT). I have not had to admit anyone from my area for over 5 years. My colleague with a poorly resourced service has several children in all the time. The cost of inpatient care for one child is much more than the cost of providing community support.Providing good, early care to families prevents family breakdowns and children being placed away from home in expensive provision. At the moment the only questions Trusts have had to answer about local provision is whether they provide it. They can answer yes if they have one very part time nurse or a fully functioning and skilled team. Clearer standard should be set. QINMAC guidelines and guidance on services is available through the Royal College of Psychiatrists ( and me!)

I remember the gala, Lorraine, but not the date. I think it was the 20th anniversary of Roe. As for Bill, I do remember, however, that he unfortunately felt the pro-choice movement “owed” him something, including money, for all of his work. Remember that speech he gave at the Willard? He really ticked some folks off…..

Boy…that Governor from Mississippi is an “anti-abortioner” that spouts the party line!!
I wish the Gov. could tell us why “any” Dr. would go through all the school and training necessary to be a physician and then start working at an abortion clinic…doing (lets say 20 abortions per day for 2-3 days each wk.)!! Earning approx. $9,000 a week before taxes… when you deduct the $$ for his security every day to not only get back and forth to the “clinic” (safely) but also..to go through every day life!! Then the ^ in his medical liability insurance for doing abortions and the additional $$ it would cost for him/her to keep their family safe everyday!! (ie: protesters following their children to school and their spouses around town threatening their lives…it doesn’t sound that good to me!! I think they could earn way more $$ removing “cancerous organs” or running an infertility clinic!! (Now that’s where the big bucks are!!)
So they certainly are NOT in it for the $$!! They are in it to “save women’s lives!!” As well as to protect their families from the heartache of having a severely deformed child or one that will die at birth!! or for the woman that is facing an unplanned pregnancy that (she feels) will destroy her life!
The Governor of the great state of Mississippi, Phil Bryan stated :
“…their one mission in life is to abort children, is to kill children in the womb.”
REALLY?!?!
I saw this posted on AB.ws and decided this was worth repeating many times during this election cycle!!
“My observation is that if the Republican Taliban has its way only corporations and fertilized eggs will be recognized as people with any rights!”

I am saddened by the gross generalizations being ascribed to my husband Bill Baird. We’ve been together for 15 years. Invalidating someone – anyone – by calling them “needy” or reiterating lies such as he was a “womanizer” makes me wonder if that person has an agenda. We should remember that Bill suffered terribly in the Charles Street Jail in Boston after he was arrested for giving a birth control and abortion speech at Boston University before 2,500 people. He is scarred to this day and few in this movement had to endure such a fate. Yet he has to endure these repeated distortions such as when Betty Friedan labeled him for years a “CIA agent.”
One thing that Bill does do, is he documents everything he says – hence the articles he shows to reporters and others to prove that what he is saying is the truth.
As far as his being “destitute” Bill NEVER asked for money for himself personally. He was trying to raise money to continue to fight against what he thought was a common foe. His U.S. Supreme Court case Baird v. Eisenstadt (he’s been involved in 4 others) legalized birth control across the country for all Americans. All of those cases and his free non-profit clinics left him without funds. Unfortunately he did sacrifice too much – including what should have been his retirement. He never thought of himself. So after fighting for and winning 5 U.S. Supreme Court cases (3 that bear his name) and giving everything he had he’s “pathetic?” Talk about kicking someone when they’re down. NARAL’s Kate Michelman told Bill he had a “golden heart.” I see him as Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince.”
He never said the movement owes him anything. That’s a ridiculous charge. He merely asked for help to continue to fight for a cause that is near and dear to him. I was next to the phone when Bill told Ron Fitzsimmons of NCAP that the anti-abortion side (and please think about calling them that and not the “pro life” side) offered him money to convert. Bill was not saying this so that he would get money from our movement. He was merely sharing information. Anyone who truly knows Bill knows he would never sacrifice his principles for money. Bill is as close to a saint in my eyes as anyone could be. He’s helped those on the opposing side with advice about cancer treatments. If someone falls from grace he is forgiving and will be the first person to back them to others who turn their backs. In 1963 he began fighting for abortion rights way before NCAP, NARAL, NOW and were even on the scene. Planned Parenthood was against birth control for singles and was against abortion at that time. Thousands of women came to Bill’s free birth control and abortion referral clinic when helping them could land him in jail for ten years. I urge people in our movement to stop invalidating those who have sacrificed and given beyond what is even human and to honor them. When such examples are displayed it makes progressive people who might be interested in fighting for human rights think twice. I have to say on many occasions I’ve wondered why I would be involved in a movement that would do to my husband what this one has. On the 40th anniversary of Baird v. Eisenstadt though well covered by Associated Press (who has labeled Bill the “Father of the Abortion Movement along with other media – not a label Bill gave himself as he has been accused of by Pat Richards) no one from national NOW, NARAL, NCAP or Planned Parenthood acknowledged this important case. Ironically National Right to Life News got it right – they admitted that Bill’s strategy in attending and picketing their conventions worked. They were upset about the press he received which educates the public about the pro choice message and not the anti-abortion misinformation. That is why Bill educates through the media. I think someone else did that – her name was Margaret Sanger – And, though Pat seems to think he is now obsolete – Bill continues to fight – He again attended and picketed against the National Right to Life Convention, spoke at Skidmore and before the Democratic Party in Cambridge etc. etc. – I would be happy to correct any other misinformation before it is posted.
