There’s a video tape circulating on youtube.com showing the outside of an abortion clinic. And, from the looks of what occurs on the tape, it looks like the constant battle between pro-choice and pro-life forces has not changed in years. It’s the same ole, same ole.
The video is from a camera affixed to the New Woman All Women Health Center in Birmingham, Alabama. This is the clinic that was bombed by Eric Rudolph years ago and it has been the target of anti-abortion protestors for years. Recently, the owner of the clinic agreed to surrender the facility’s license following a state investigation that found that two patients were given an overdose of a drug meant to limit blood loss and had to be transferred by ambulance to a hospital. Under an agreement with the Dept of Health, the clinic will cease performing abortions by May 11 and surrender its license by May 18 unless a new provider can obtain an operating license.
Putting that issue aside, the video is what really fascinated me. It begins with Mr. Jeff White, a long time anti abortion activist, and some other heavy set white fellow walking on the sidewalk at the entrance to the clinic. There is a short iron fence supposedly keeping them off of the property but there is an opening for patients to enter the facility.
Suddenly, a sprinkler on the clinic property comes on and the jet spray goes back and forth onto the sidewalk. From what I can tell, the spray is also hitting portions of the street. I am sure that it was a coincidence that the lawn needed watering at the same time the protestors were in range. Mr. White then runs onto the property inside the gate and steps on the spray. About five more protestors arrive. White is clearly trespassing and, about four minutes later, a police car pulls up and the owner of the clinic, Diane Derzis, comes out to talk to the policeman who is sitting in the car. White then steps off the sprinkler and Derzis goes over to adjust it so it begins sprinkling the protestors again.
Then White goes back onto the property, looking like he wants to adjust the spray, Derzis comes over and kneels down but it looks like she puts her hand on White and he then pushes her to the ground.
Then starts the dance.
Other police cars pull up. In the meantime, some nice Christian types join their friends with four big signs with pictures of dead fetuses. The signs are pointing right at the clinic. Meanwhile, the police escort White into the police car (while he is talking on his cell phone) but White keeps walking out of the car before they close the door. I don’t know what is happening there. And the police are surrounded by the protestors who are trying to get their two cents in with the authorities – authorities who clearly don’t want to be there. Everyone is taking pictures, giving their side of the story, all the while White keeps getting in and out of the car. A clinic staff person is also taking pictures. It just goes around and around.
I’m almost starting to feel sorry for these pathetic, old anti-abortion advocates who feel the need to stand outside of an abortion clinic. They’re clearly not stopping any abortions. Hell, I don’t know if they even get a chance to talk to any women who are going into the clinic. They are a total joke, losers who could be umpiring at the local Little League game or working at the homeless shelter at that time.
You know what I think compels some of them to be there? My theory is that some of them just enjoy staring at women who have had sex. It’s a sick thought, I know but I’m convinced that these are the same slobs who will call these women “whores” and who will advise them to “keep their legs closed,” as many of them are want to say.
It’s just pathetic.

I agree with you about their lascivious nature. The trolls in Allentown love to talk about a woman’s body. Reminds me of the time a young woman was walking into the clinic sporting a camisole that revealed a bit of cleavage. One horny old guy named Don said to this woman, an employee, no less—“looks like you’re all set up for breast feeding.” Another comment stands out from Katie who remarked during a particularly busy morning, “Guess there’s been a whole lot of f*cking going on.” And if that wasn’t crass enough, she told one young man, “Hey, you had your fun romping around in the sheets with her. Now be a man and take care of her.”

Other comments from the Mental Midgets who perform during the Circus of the Absurd usually that float somewhere in the space between deviant and disgusting, usually focusing on wombs:
“You have life in your womb”
“They’re gonna suck your baby out of your womb”
“They’re gonna rip you up so bad you’ll never have kids”
“God put that child in your womb and only God can take that child away”
“Your womb will cry out at night”

Philip Zimbardo Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, author of The Lucifer Effect, asks “Why do good, ordinary people sometimes become perpetrators of evil?” He writes about the ease in which people aggress against innocent others after dehumanizing them.
Protesters like Mr. White in Alabama and like Joe, John and Gerry in Allentown, PA, like to symbolically annihilate women by treating them as if they are baby machines then spew hate-filled invectives like calling them baby killers or the Bride of Lucifer. I’ve seen Joyce humiliate one of the escorts by calling him fag boy or Joe calling several Jewish escorts stiff-necked Jews. All of them invoke the name of Jesus or God. All of them have the choice to be loving or spiteful, compassionate or hateful. They choose to be evil.

There were several women who paraded back and forth saying rosaries out loud, or really much louder–in the passive aggressive behavior of adolescents and ignoramuses–when they said “pray for our sinners” as if to suggest we are sinners and they weren’t (but, hey, that’s a theological fart in church).
What struck me as comical is how they could say “Hail Mary, full of grace” and “God is offended by abortion” in one breath
–OR–
“Hail Mary, full of grace” and “You’ll regret your abortion for the rest of your life” in one breath.
They also were obsessed with women’s bodies to the extent that they told big whoppers about women increasing their chances for breast cancer after abortion by 400% OR trying to force women to look at their pretty postcards that showed fetal parts—saying this is what they will do to your baby, make it look like baby road kill.
There’s no end to their creepy, mean-spirited ways to shame women.

They usually shout “Rachel’s Vineyard”
One particularly nasty comment from the meanest of the mean, a protester named Joyce stands out for it’s utter lack of compassion. In the old location, where protesters lurked by the door to the clinic and frequently shouted to escorts (and to me) in the parking lot, as a young woman, supported by an older woman, to their car, Joyce shouts out to me but within easy earshot of the two women, “Take a look at that broken woman, Kate. Is that what makes you proud?”

Let me share another example of the hate these trolls have for women. This example comes from the old clinic but the old guy still protests at the new place:
One of the clinic’s employees was dropped off right at the door. I was still at the door as the young woman quickly opened the car door and went inside but not before Jerry started yelling at her and then took a shot at the innocent, wide-eyed children sitting in their carseats in the back of the car no doubt wondering at all the commotion in the street just outside. Jerry had to do it, no doubt. His hatred spewed seemingly unrehearsed. Aimed right at the little one closest to him he lowered his face to the child’s level and yelled “Your mommy is a baby killer.”

I went to the hospital with kinedy failure in 2005 after I had my first child. I was in the hospital on an average of 3 weeks out the month for the next almost 3 years. I went to 5 different doctors and had every test done imaginable atleast 5 times. My parents got me an appointment at the Mayo Clinic in Minnisota and with in 3 days Dr Lightner had figured out that I had Bi-Lateral Renal Reflux and had me set up for surgery. I am so greatful that she has given me my life back and I can spend more time with my kids instead of in the hospital. The Mayo Clinic is truely a God sent for me and thousands of others.

I had a terrible exeineprce in the neurology department at Mayo Rotchester. Basically I was labeled as just being neurotic. I ( I wonder how often this happens to middle aged women by male doctors) I later found out they hadn’t looked at my records and had missed important results. They refused to go back and include them in their charting even though I sent copies and they were the reason I was there. I was able to go to another prestigious clinic and obtain a diagnosis.I do not think I would ever return there because I feel any other doctors would be prejudiced by their charting. To those of you who have had a bad exeineprce also I would say that doctors are human wherever they practice. They have prejudices, they can jump to conclusion, they can miss things and misdiagnose things. They might treat the next patient just fine and you got them on a bad day but at Mayo they will never ever admit that one of their own might be wrong or have missed something or that they themselves did. Don’t give up.

the police need to enforce the law rather than ignore it to support their own beliefs.
birmingham is a very troublesome place right now.
the protesters are allowed to break the law as they choose and the police do nothing.
that sends out a dangerous message.
this time, a woman was assaulted by a man.
next time, someone could be hurt more seriously.

Unfortunately, I had a horrible exnrpieece at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. I had gone there seeking help with my migraines and coming up with a new preventative plan. I felt the doctor I saw was made me feel like I was a waste of his time. I had taken a day off of work and driven 5+ hours to go to this clinic and was basically pushed out the door like a piece of trash and no consideration for my time or effort in getting there. I would tell you that there is a reason that UAB in birmingham has a 9 month wait there caring attitude and desire to help a patient in need was way more than Mayo ever could be, but you will have to put up with poor communication after your initial visit. I probably should have done just that.

I left Mayo Clinic in Rochester disappointed in their secrive. My wife has had chronic pain for nearly 5 years. The pain is located in one area of the body and has progressed from a random flareup to a now constant dibilitating pain. Threfore we went to Mayo last month. We were in Rochester 23 days and she went through a number of tests. Some tests showed some abnormalites but the Doctors felt none are cause of her pain.Once finished they told her to live with the pain and go to a pain clinic. GOODBYEI could not beleive that Mayo would give up their search for the cause of her pain. We even called back and begged one Doctor to rethink what could bedone next. Their answer was that the Doctor and his PA would review and call us back. We waited several days and no answer came so we left town. She continues to suffer terribly and we have no idea what to do now. We know that somewhere there is a doctor that knows how to find the answer. My conclusion for Mayo is that they are a beautiful organization, very efficient, very busy and successful, BUT seem only interested in the Low hanging fruit that pass through their doors in hoards on a daily basis. Once they see that the soluition is difficult it is GOOD BYE to you.

Rogelio,
The phrase, the altar of hatred, captured from archives of 9-11 reports in an Arab newspaper is suggestive of the mileu created by the protesters. Rather than sidewalk counseling, rather than offering hope and life, rather than invoking the name of all that is holy, they produce variants of anger, hatred and loathing. The old loser cruisers from the former Union Blvd location continue their hateful ways at the new place, only now that have to resort to amplification of their hateful messages. So when you ask about love or compassion, they offer neither.

Rather than offering compassion and respect, she was lining the streets with tiny coffins, wearing fetal “road kill” (as she called it) postcards secured to her sandals (so women might see as they look down??), screaming about baby road kill, carrying a doll in a carrier and waving its arm to women, wearing a yellow slicker with a banner showing a fetus with a crown of thorns while she waved a miniature American flag.
