In 1969, one of my housemates, Michelle, and I offered to drive a colleague from Fort Collins CO to Denver. All three of us worked at Luby’s Cafeteria. Michelle and I worked part time because we also attended Colorado State University while our friend, Linda, worked full time. Linda was a 30-something divorcee with two children living in a trailer park with her Baptist parents. She had started dating again and found herself with an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. So she arranged for an abortion and needed a ride and an alibi. The story she told her parents (who would be watching her children) was that she was stepping out for the evening with friends and would crash at our house (we were five women who shared a really large rental home). That was her cover story. The real story was quite different. She could not tell them she was pregnant. Unmarried women, according to her parents, did not have sex, did not get pregnant and, sure as hell, did not have an abortion. Linda was convinced that if they knew she was pregnant, they would throw her out on the street.
So, with the best of intentions, Michelle and I made the one-hour trip to Denver with our friend. She was understandably nervous about the arrangement she made over the phone with a strange man, the abortionist. The plan was to meet him at a motel on West Colfax Avenue, cash in hand, where he would perform her abortion. It’s kind of amazing to think about legislators and antis talking about waiting periods and ambulatory surgical requirements now. Our friend had an abortion on a motel bed without any assurance that the man was a doctor, without any assurance that the man had hospital privileges, without any anesthesia, without any assurances of sterility, without any guarantees that she would live and without any state required speeches about pregnancy options.
I do not recall much of the trip. Knowing the three of us, we likely chatted like magpies. I also loved to drive. So, zipping down the highway was just a way of life for me. It wasn’t until we arrived at the crummy looking motel, that I began to feel afraid for Linda as she got out of the car. She seemed scared. Michelle and I watched her enter the designated motel room and the door close behind her. Our instructions were to pick her up in two hours, as best I can recall.
Keep in mind those were not the days of cell phones. We couldn’t text or call her. And we knew not to knock on the motel door. Instead, Michelle and I went to the local favorite, a coffee shop called the White Spot.
They were all over the metropolitan Denver area and had one of the best waffles around. Whether for greasy comfort food, post party munchies or waiting for a friend, the cheap eats at the White Spot were just the ticket.
From the recesses of my memory, I recall feeling anxious while Michelle, a veteran of abortion, seemed more comfortable. I was 20 years old and naïve. I didn’t know anything about abortions except hushed conversations about girls desperately scrapping together funds to go to Mexico or Sweden. I didn’t know even that much about sex or pregnancy. Thinking about this naiveté (or ignorance) now, as I write this post, reminds me of our 2006 documentary fieldwork with junior high students in Allentown. The kids were making digital stories about issues that impacted their community like speeding, litter, graffiti and recreational parks for kids. In what was likely the hottest day on record, our digital documentary campers were doing fieldwork in downtown Allentown when one of the antiabortion ‘truth trucks’ rolled down Hamilton Boulevard. One of the young girls, a nine year old, saw the truck and said, “That’s why I won’t use birth control.” I was astounded at her misperceptions (but said nothing to correct her because it wasn’t my place). But considering my ignorance back in 1969 and her misperceptions in 2006, there seemed to be little difference in terms of naiveté. But I digress.
After polishing our waffles, swilling gallons of coffee, and polluting our lungs with cigarette after cigarette, we eventually returned to the West Colfax motel. Linda was cramping but seemed otherwise OK. I felt a bit of relief because she was with us.
But by the time we got Linda settled in our house, things took a turn for the worse. She began bleeding really heavily. I drove to the drug store for sanitary pads. But the bleeding worsened still. She soaked through an entire box of super soaker pads in no time. Fortunately, we had enough sense to take her to the emergency room. She survived, thanks to an emergency hysterectomy, a short visit to ICU and several transfusions.
This is before Roe v Wade. Others weren’t so lucky.

It’s like that now, in a sense. Girlfriends, daughters, boyfriends, sons–they know. I spoke with several guys last Saturday at AWC—they knew the clinic in its old location—not sure why they knew about it but word does get out…It seemed to be an underground network back then but now it’s more word of mouth

“Dunkle” you are disgusting!! The point being…there was “NO” doctor!! Women were desperate enough to take their chances and pray that the person doing their abortion knew what they were doing…and that luck was/might be on their side!!
Today these same “type of people “faux” doctors” are in motel rooms pumping all types of “crap” into women that are trying to get “plastic surgery” …CHEAP!!
But they are NOT…in any way shape or form “Dr. George Tiller”!! Who was a very knowlegable…caring…physician!! He knew his life was in jeopardy (everyday)…but…he also knew that women needed him…so desperately that their need outweighed his own safety!! Even though he was very cautious…I guess maybe he let his guard down …while he was ushering parishioner’s into the his church on Sunday morning!! Who would have thought a “faux christian” would murder him “in the house of the Lord”!?!?!?

The Jane Group would have been really helpful had they spread out to the western states. I know a woman who was part of the Jane Group. To hear her talk about their work was awe-inspiring. Their service was full of compassion with incredible expertise.
And if ever Roe is overturned, new Jane-type groups will pop up. The need for abortion doesn’t stop just because it’s illegal.

It was a sad and dangerous time when women had to risk their lives to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. It is a sad and dangerous time now when politicians are struggling to out-pander each other by passing unnecessary legislation to restrict the hard-won rights recognized in Roe v. Wade. if women lose even the currently attenuated right to manage their reproductive lives, we can expect to see more unwanted, neglected and abused children, and more women’s lives lost.

I missed the fun at AWC because I was in Manhattan on a mission from the goddess of all that is delicious.
Received a really funny note from an informant about Bertha Bigbutt, “We weren’t sure of Joyce’s identity until she turned her profile to us, her butt has gotten even larger and she really made a fashion blunder, wearing a poster on her back that, as a result of her butt-push, stuck out at a really strange angle.” Too bad the message was lost in the hog slop (or is it hog slope?).
If only I was there to capture this on camera. But, alas, my conversation with a DA about young females being trafficked in NY and Allentown was far more engaging, for more serious than the trivialities that antis wallow in outside clinics.

What stinks? the shaming, invading privacy, telling lies, etc? I agree. It does stink, especially when the antis claim to be so morally superior.
But let me go back to 2007, when the prolife activists at AWC were asked to be interviewed for a documentary. They refused because the documentarian was a former escort volunteer. [it’s clear that they are familiar with hardened orthodoxy otherwise they might have participated). They refused because they could not forgive, because they were suspicious that their actions would be misrepresented, because they “knew” there would be bias. Of course, they didn’t “know” anything. In fact, they don’t know Jack-Doody about documentary work. They knew who they were/are and that their behavior is often less than compassionate, less than civil, less than respectful.
Nonetheless, the documentary was completed without their interviews. It was completed so that it addresses forthrightly and honestly the prolife position. It also addresses forthrightly and honestly the prolife messages and behaviors toward clients who ignored them. In the end, the documentary states quite plainly that there was an effort to understand how religiously grounded activists could engage in behaviors that seemed so uncivil, so hostile toward the very women they wanted to reach. There is an acknowledgement that these prolife activists believe life begins at conception . . . In the sense that a fertilized egg is the moral equivalent of an adult
As such, they feel a moral obligation to save the unborn . . . Regardless of the ethics of their tactics.
It goes on to say that no one on either side would argue against the right to free speech or the right to exercise one’s religion . . . and ends with a grand finale.
But the antis will object, will say it stinks.
I say the antis stink.

Dressing up [like make believe] in ugly [inane, grotesque, illogical, ignorant, disrespectful, pornographic] posters [more like tents] and harassing [terrorizing, stigmatizing, disrespecting] people.

But Martin, lemmings do commit suicide. And that’s what you “prochoicers” do. Course the killing always start with other people before it gets around to yourselves.

Misconceptions about lemmings committing suicide is just that—a misconception. Lemmings, unlike the antis, are not mindlessly following unquestionably the pope’s pack.

After what John has done, He should be worried about death when he meets his creator and ends up rotting in hell for the rest of eternity.

I’m told you don’t rot in hell, but burn. You should be able to confirm that shortly, Bart.

John, I have spoken to Jesus. Everything is very clear. The path you have taken, unless you repent, you are going to hell.
It is as plain as day, and the good lord as told me so.
Repent now before it is too late. I plead with you for your immortal soul.
If you are not concerned, that is your choice. The lord has spoken very clearly to me on this point about you. You can choose to ignore Jesus or to embrace Jesus. You have so far Choosen to alienate Jesus, who dies for your neverending sins. The least you could do is honor Jesus and repent your Satanic ways.
Only an eternity of horror awaits you if you do not follow the word of the Lord!

Cries unheard—He is not listening false prophet hope

Calling, calling on your god
Screaming, screaming from inside
Fear, fear of the unknown
Hope, all your hope is gone
Lies! Cries! Lives! Lies!
Religious zombies following nothing
Christian psychos waiting for the rapture
Programmed people followers of the church
Hypocritical waste of lives

Good news for the prochoice folks. Clinics from across the nation are supplying photographs and addresses of anti abortion protesters. Soon, all you folks will gain some notoriety. I’ll post the link when I get the news.

Can’t get too excited about this because I bet they’ll omit me.
But hey, I like the idea. One link with anti-abortion protesters’ pictures, names, addresses, phone numbers; a similar link for the deathscorts’.
Won’t happen, though. Know why? Because of my big mouth. Why can’t I just shut up and let these killers’ helpers commit suicide. Why can’t I leave the classroom where I tell everybody the truth.
The message goes right out: “Dunkle (or maybe, Johnny-Boy) says it will backfire.” And they’ll call it off. They hang on my every word.

Every month or two a new group of adolescent illiterates rise up. I shoot them down and they disappear. The latest group is composed of Evan, Sally, Carla, Davida, and Ira. You hope they’ll stick around and improve, but they always run.
I have half a mind to ignore them, maybe even give them a pat on the back. I just might try one of those.
