The other day I was chatting with a twenty year old neighbor that I’ve known for years and at some point we got to talking about my history in the pro-choice movement. I talked about working for the National Abortion Rights Action League in the early 1980’s and then how I helped organize the National Coalition of Abortion Providers. And when I related how I had seen several of our doctors murdered by pro-life terrorists, he gave me a blank stare. “They killed the doctors?” he asked.
It’s bad enough that the younger generations have no recollection of the days of illegal abortion but now the string of murders committed over the years (and under the banner of God) may also be fading from our collective memories. Well, if I have anything to say about it I will do all I can to make sure that the violence that has occurred will not disappear into the dustbin of history.
The first doctor to be murdered was Doctor David Gunn.
David Gunn was known as a “circuit rider.” He spent most days on the road, working in a number of abortion clinics throughout Florida, Alabama and Georgia. He had a Bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and an M.D. from the University of Kentucky. At some point, anti-abortion extremists starting piecing together how he was travelling from clinic to clinic and he became a target for harassment. Normally a laid back guy, David started expressing concern for his safety in the early 1990’s, especially after he discovered that Operation Rescue had distributed an old-fashioned “Wanted” poster with Gunn’s picture on it. In addition to the picture, the poster included his home phone number and other identifying information. In response, David purchased three handguns. He kept one in his glove compartment, one under the seat and one in the trunk.
On March 10, 1993, David left his hotel room early in the morning and made his way to the Pensacola Women’s Medical Services on Bayou Boulevard, a clinic that he had helped open just a month before. His new clinic, nestled among offices for lawyers, doctors and accountants, bore no ostensible signs and the patient load was generally rather light. And lately, a group of protestors had started standing outside of the facility in protest. On this day, one of them was a young man named Michael Griffin.
As always, Doctor Gunn pulled into his parking space at the back of the clinic. When he got out of his car, David’s limp was palpable, a result of his childhood bout with polio. He did not grab any of his guns because he did not want them in the clinic around the patients and staff. He took a few steps towards the clinic and at 9:30 am, David Gunn’s life was snuffed out. It came with no warning, he had no time to defend himself. He was just gone.
It seems that when Michael Griffin saw Gunn’s car pull up, he casually left the protest, walked up behind the car then calmly shot David Gunn in the back three times. He was heard to yell out “Don’t kill any more babies!” After the act, he threw down his .38-caliber snub-nosed revolver and waited for the police to arrive.
Michael Griffin was immediately arrested, charged with murder and, despite alleging that he had been “brainwashed” by anti abortion activists John Burt, was quickly found guilty. He remains in jail in Florida to this day.
The first murder of an abortion doctor made national headlines for weeks. Prime Time specials, the Donohue Show, Nightline all covered the act. Doctor Gunn’s son, David, Jr., became a spokesperson for abortion providers. A number of abortion doctors left the field, concerned for their safety. And the federal government, i.e., the Clinton Administration, did nothing. Meanwhile, there were other assassins waiting in the wings, hatching similar plans.
This was just the first assassination of an abortion doctor.

Of course, they argue that they are in fact saving “lives” by killing the one doctor. The irony is that even though David (and the others) was killed, women got their abortions elsewhere. I remember talking to the clinic owner in Mobile a few days later and she said she was getting a lot of patients from Pensacola…

Sounds to me like a relatively humane way to dispatch someone — three bullets in the back.
Relative, that is, to what Dave himself was about to do — enter a little Auschwitz and spend ten or fifteen minutes slowly pulling apart a half dozen young people, most of whom had been living for only two or three months.

Pat, haven’t we been through this before. I said the younger the victim the worse. And remember the quote? The only killing that doesn’t separate the body parts follows ingestion of poison.
Once you can see the little bugger (got that from Kate) you kill him by pulling him apart, except, of course, in partial-birth killings. In those cases you turn cannibal and to ingest the valuable organs you need to be very careful that everything stays intact.

Burt apparently was aware of a plot by Daniel Ware to kill a whole bunch of folks at a memorial for Doctor Gunn in 1994. Ware came to Pensacola to kill them but in some way Burt either talked him out of it or put the feds on to him. The incident is documented in “From the Gates of Hell” that Charles referred to. It’s pretty chilling stuff…

I’m almost finished. Descent into Hell is a book that grows powerful, about someone’s descent into hell, the author’s. He’s a nice kid, from a weak and ineffective nominal Catholic family in a weak and ineffective nominal Catholic church in Buffalo, NY. As a pre-teen he finds a Protestant, Pat Robertson, who is not weak and ineffective. He gravitates towards Pat and becomes pro-life.
Superficially, though, and when he discovers the advantages of becoming anti-life, he switches.
My favorite section, so far, is Paul Hill’s telling the author what’s wrong with the Protestant churches . Paul should have been a Catholic.
Yeah, it was Burt who told the FBI about Ware. They might have scared him into it but more likely he was trying to stop Ware from wrecking havoc.

Ten dollars to a toothbrush Burt didn’t say boo about Ware until the Feds paid him a visit and then he spilled his guts. Rather than be a glorious political prisoner for the so-called “unborn,” he chose to continue to live his fantasy life as a pretend rescuer of those who don’t want to be “rescued.” Typical behavior of someone who is trying to take the easy way out of some pretty significant psychological issues.

Merry asked, “Why are the Anti’s so dumb? They never get your point!”
Merry, they are not “dumb.” They are fixated on hating abortion. It is a way of addressing their own fears about the oblivion they realize that death will bring to them. Because they do not have a better way of dealing with it– religion, philosophy, maturity, etc.– they cannot risk being wrong. Therefore, when you challenge them, they evade, avoid, obfuscate or deny; to engage you seriously would to open themselves up to contrary facts which might destroy their defenses against death– and then where would they be?
For them, it’s a desperate struggle, and unfortunately they have chosen to wage it by forming a dysfunctional self-help group which calls itself “pro-life.”
The main evidence of their crippling handicap is that while they claim to pledge all for the fetus, they do nothing above average for real children. Their real work has been to develop a public relations campaign to link the term “abortion” to a number of negative concepts– and they’ve been pretty good at it.
The ship of aborticentrism founders on the Bundy anomaly– while they would see Ted Bundy be born, they cannot bring themselves to prevent the next Ted Bundy by raising the child they don’t want. Instead they focus on the image of the next fetal Bundy being aborted.

The only foundering that will happen is the Pro-life sector and its denigration of all things intelligent, and in finality the neo-crusade these monsters have created in this society.

One of the many interesting things in Live From the Gates of Hell was Reider’s wife’s attempt after their disillusionment with the dysfunctional self-help movement to bridge the chasm between them and the “pro-choicers” by participating in Common Ground. She of course gave up on it when she found out they weren’t interested in caring for human life.
Another one was Reider witnessing Ralph Reed lying quite unabashedly over the phone. Of course, he didn’t identify Reed, but it was clear that’s who it was. Reider was shocked that a “principled Christian” would do that.
