You have heard, no doubt, people saying that their choice for president is based on sentiments such as “we have shared values” or “he’s authentic” or “he’s prolife.” Political scientist Samuel Popkin of the University of California, San Diego, calls this kind of reasoning “gut rationality.” Essentially, people vote by heuristics and go with their gut, with whom they most identify, or with how the candidates make them feel. But such a vote, while rational sounding, tells us that voters often vote with their heart and not their head.
For most prolife voters (and other single-issue voters), emotional voting is a substitute for their cognitive-processing limitations. Most voters simply do not know all that there is to know about a candidate. The information available on the candidate’s record, the assessment of the veracity of the information and prognostications for what the candidate might do if voted into office, is a daunting task for political pundits. For ordinary citizens, sifting through this data, if available, could cause an overload for even the most studious.
The average citizen is woefully ignorant of facts and, thus, relies on sound bytes and obfuscatory God terms like family values, patriotism, freedom and progress. In fact, according to political voting behavior expert, Drew Westen, PhD, when given empirical data that pushed voters one way or the other, that had no impact, those facts only hardened their emotionally biased views. In politics, Westen claims, “when reason and emotion collide, emotion invariably wins.” It’s a sad reality for our democracy when reason and facts lose to emotions, when politicians’ sound bytes reign over the complexities within the platform of each candidate aspiring to lead our country.
Not surprising, for most prolife voters, abortion, couched as the all-encompassing prolife moniker, is their single issue vote looking for a prolife candidate. So, if you are that voter, ask yourself how ending legal abortion will improve the lives of single mothers, homeless and hungry families or unemployed parents. Ask yourself how your prolife candidate will address the astronomical rise in sexually transmitted infections in teens (one out of four) in spite of the failed conservative-embraced abstinence-only education in school districts. Ask how ending legal abortion will help the woman carrying a dead fetus at 14 weeks or help the woman with a hydranencephalic fetus. Ask how ending legal abortion will help the woman who is forced to continue her pregnancy despite suffering from affective psychosis and serious hyperemesis gravidurum. Ask how ending legal abortion will help the pregnant woman who does not want to continue the pregnancy, does not want to be a mother, does not want the fetus to be inside her, has no emotional attachment to this thing growing inside her and does not want any outsiders telling her what she can or cannot do with her body. These questions are just about abortion. They’re not about the larger issues that support women and their families. They’re not about the very real issues that families face as they try to put food on the table, tutor children with their homework, juggle work and family, and juggle finances to pay the rent or buy the groceries. Some say that it’s a matter of conscience. They say they cannot support someone who agrees with taking innocent life. OK. But does your prolife candidate support the military’s taking of innocent lives in the many U.S. invasions? Does your candidate support capital punishment? Does your candidate support budgetary cuts that break the lifelines for the poor, the disenfranchised and our veterans? And after you’ve pondered your answers to these questions, issues that the Congress and the president can impact,
remember that the president doesn’t decide the abortion issue. The only role the president has in that regard is through his judicial appointments, primarily to the Supreme Court.
To sum things up, consider two more questions. First, if you’re an antiabortion single-issue voter making your bet on the prolife candidate, ask yourself if abortion is something that is paramount to the safety, prosperity, to the very existence of all in this nation. Second, ask yourself if the end of legal abortion will save the nation from destruction in the long run. I’m betting you cannot answer in the affirmative to either question, if you are truthful.

Remember when President Obama stuck his dog on his car roof for a 12 hour drive, hid his money in foreign bank accounts, accepted an FDIC bailout for his company, joked about being “unemployed” and only getting small speaker’s fees, and wrote off 47% of Americans as lazy leeches looking for a government handout?
Yeah, me neither.

Every time Republicans and Democrats come together to get some traction on an issue, they begin “calling them out,” claiming they are “betraying the values of the American people.” Faux news is a political machine, not a serious news channel.

David said in an earlier comment that “pro-life” was code for rapist’s helper. I’d agree with that because antiabortion activists like Frankie Pavone, Geraldine McWiliams, John Dunkle, Joyce Beelzebub Mazalewski, Kathleen Kuhns, Kathleen (Your Friend) Mondok, Joe and his Natalie Kubick believe that a woman who was raped and becomes pregnant should carry the pregnancy to term.
It’s like Paul Ryan and any other GOP mongrels. They don’t have to live with the consequences of 9 months of pregnancy, worry about carrying for the output of the pregnancy, worry about the screwed up realities that a rapist can demand his paternal rights to his kid. Hell, no. Nope. Nope. Nope.
These immoral folks think it’s OK to force a woman into servitude for the sake of some product of conception. And that, folks, is seriously problematic.

You can see one source of Kate’s anger here — the inability at this point in her life to talk straight. It kills her because here is woman who prides herself on a hard-hitting, no-holds-barred style, and yet she just cannot carry through.
So, instead of “carry the young person to term” she is forced to write “carry the pregnancy to term.” Not only is this cowardly (refusing to say what you believe), it makes no sense: pregnancy names the condition of a woman who is carrying a child. Pregnancy is not another name for the child.
If Kate would only become pro-life, she would no longer be a bright, articulate (at times), vital woman twisted by hatred, she would just become a bright, articulate, and vital woman. (Notice I said would, not
could.)

Don’t see anything of what you are saying, John.
I only see BF articulating so well that you and your compatriots cannot keep up so you respond to comments, posts, and questions with only really dumb comments.
Is that the Satan in you that does that?

The medical definition of pregnancy:
Definition
The period from conception to birth. After the egg is fertilized by a sperm and then implanted in the lining of the uterus, it develops into the placenta and embryo, and later into a fetus. Pregnancy usually lasts 40 weeks, beginning from the first day of the woman’s last menstrual period, and is divided into three trimesters, each lasting three months.
Description
Pregnancy is a state in which a woman carries a fertilized egg inside her body. Due to technological advances, pregnancy is increasingly occurring among older women in the United States.
I don’t see the word :child: in here. I looked in a couple of other dictionaries, and no “child” there either.

Get away from the dictionaries, Dave, and listen to people: “She’s with child,” “The woman and her unborn child were killed in the accident,” et al.
Bet you didn’t see “growth,” “contents of the uterus,” “intruder,” etc. there either.

Quite a lot of commenting. Thanks much.
The one phrase from YF — stoop so low you’re eating bugs off the ground–must be some provincial aphorism. Never heard it before.
Enjoyed the **properly formed conscience** comments. That concept reminds me of a proper business outfit or the British proper cup of tea or proper etiquette or proper hypothesis—all concepts open to interpretation.
I suspect that John Dunkle will have a list of code words, drawn from the above comments, to putrify the air this coming Saturday. He never seems to tire of hearing himself talk.

Why would God make us fully capable of rational and critical thought if we are only rewarded for blind faith and obedience like that of prolifers?

Wow Kate. Such a powerful question. Haven’t you ever heard the joke about God saying I have some good news for you and some bad news? The first news is that I’ve given you free will. The second new is I’ve given you free will. God doesn’t want to make us into non-thinking robots or Stepford Wives followers of Christ. No, no. He wants us to know Him and love Him in this world so we can be happy with Him in the next. Instead of calling it blind faith think of it as love and obedience. Hopefully we spend all or even most (some) of our lives learning to know and trust God. Are you trying to know him Kate or are you cynical sarcastically referring to His son as J.C. depicting horrific pictures of an impregnated Jesus on the cross as you have on your previous blog. Or do you have a kernel of faith – perhaps wanting to know Him a bit but keeping your distance so as not to lose your autonomy? Perhaps something so horrific happened to you that your world fell apart and your trust in God fell apart. That is when we need to lean on Him even more again trusting that He loves us so much He will take care of us. Seek Him and He will respond with tenderness.
When we truly realize who we are in Him, we are able to see how much He loves us and how He sees us in His eyes. God made us the wonderful creatures we are, but He also made us with a free will. We can either choose to accept God’s love and forgiveness from Him and choose light and life or reject Him and chose the darkness and death. The choice is ours, of course, but I have choosen life and light and I hope that you will too. John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
Jer. 29:13 – “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with your whole heart.”
Maybe you’ve been in some ‘wilderness’ years – looking, searching, questioning. That’s okay. God understands. He gives us a lifetime to know Him. He speaks to our hearts every day calling to us to come to Him. The great news is He never gives up on us.
Learning to trust God seems to require learning to stop relying on ourselves so much. It means radical change at our core. Most of us don’t like change of any kind, much less surgery on our core self. Surgery hurts; it incapacitates and can even make us scream in pain.
God, the divine surgeon, is worth trusting. He loves us more than we can know. His wounding seems grievous, but it restores us to wholeness. If you find yourself under his surgical knife, be still and learn to trust him. St Thomas Aquinas reminds us that we cannot truly love what we do not know. True intimacy is a deep knowledge of the other person. It also requires us to be vulnerable. You have been gifted with critical thinking. Use it to study God. You won’t be sorry. Look at all of the great figures of the Bible that had to learn to trust God. You are in good company.
Take some time off from your abortion work and give God one month of your time, talent and treasure. Let Him teach you to trust Him and to love Him. You could become a great saint and that is what we are all called to become.

I will not even look at this blog again because otherwise I will not be able to resist coming back. Leave me to my martinis and I’ll leave you, Kate, EC, LDM, Rog, and Chuck to the adolescent illiterates. Someone can then determine which poison is more toxic.

pedophiles and killers and morons, oh my!
i apologize if it offends anyone if i change the subject and comment on the OP.
it appears to me that abortion is one of the issues that polarizes american voters.
BF has presented some wonderful examples, as she always does, of antis who are single issue voters.
i know plenty of choicers who are also single issue voters based on the issue of abortion and would never dream of voting for a candidate who would support legal restrictions on abortion, even if they agreed with that candidate on everything else.
to them, everything else in negotiable, just as to the antis who are single issue voters, everything else is negotiable.
but to these people, abortion is not negotiable when they are at the polls.
i am not saying this is good or that it is bad. it is what it is.

We have our own share of views about abortion. And everyone must respect that. And we all have our views about our two presidentiables. The best thing we could do is to comment rationally so people’s mind could be more clear about the things they’ve been fighting for.
