George Tiller would have been proud.
In May, 2009, Doctor George Tiller was assassinated while serving as an usher at his church in Wichita, Kansas. Over the years, he had become known world-wide as the doctor who performed very late term abortions. As a result, he and his staff became a target for anti-abortion zealots. Indeed, years earlier he was shot in the arm as he was leaving his clinic but he survived and was at work the next day. For such a soft spoken man, he became a lightning rod in the abortion “wars” and ultimately one of those zealots caught up with him.
Soon after his death, his clinic in Wichita – Women’s Health Care Services – was shut down by his family. His colleague, Doctor Lee Carhart, publicly declared that he would try to fill the void left by Tiller’s death and would try to accommodate those patients who he would have treated had he lived. So, Carhart started doing late abortions in Maryland. Meanwhile, however, one of Tiller’s former staff people, Julie Burkhart, had another vision.
Working under the auspices of the “Trust Women Foundation,” Burkhart and her troops raised approximately $1 million with the thought of re-opening Tiller’s clinic. They have been busy renovating the office, recruiting doctors, getting permits, etc. The new clinic will offer many reproductive health services, including abortions up to 14 weeks. The clinic is now called the “South Wind Women’s Center.”
Needless to say, at some point the local Operation Rescue folks heard about the plans and they suddenly have a new cause (and a new fundraiser). They are now a constant presence at the clinic (even though no patients are using it yet). They even photographed a plumbing contractor hauling two large trailers onto the building parking lot and they then posted the name of the contractor on their website, encouraging their troops to barrage his office with phone calls. That’s just what they do and, at times, they can be very effective.
Then, Operation Rescue turned their attention to Wichita’s Planning Commission where they attempted to get the clinic property rezoned to prohibit it from opening. Despite receiving thousands of letters and emails from pro-lifers, the Commission voted 6-4 against the rezoning request. Talk about courage!. It is possible, however, that the Wichita City Council could still decide to take up the rezoning request on its own so that battle is not over yet.
Ms Burkhart and her staff have cajones. They could have sat back, held an annual vigil in Doctor Tiller’s name and gone on with their lives. But Burkhart has Doctor Tiller’s same commitment to providing health care to women despite the dangerous climate. And, yes, she has his guts. As she recently said in an interview: “We’re not going to be pushed around by the antis.”
They are facing daunting opposition. And Julie knows better than anyone that her life is on the line, just like Doctor Tiller’s was. But she and her tenacious staff are plowing forward. They will not be bullied.
You go, girls!

Nice post, Pat. The Kansas anti-abortion movement went on from their “Days of Rage” to infiltrate EVERY level of government, right up to the US Senate. Hardly surprising Bob Dole didn’t like to live there even while he represented them. When he retired, they put in Brownback (who’s now Governor).
What you have in Kansas is a government staffed with people who hate the people. So much anger, and so many places to expend it! The pregnant, the poor, the weak, the non-white… I am surprised the Wichita Zoning Board actually stood up to them. Maybe it’s a sign the electorate is starting to believe just because somebody hates abortion, it doesn’t make them a good public servant.

Thanks, Charles. I’m totally surprised also that the Planning Commission stood up to the pressure to rezone. Of course, they have to be careful about “taking” property or else they could get sued. But, like I said, the Council can review the decision and that makes me nervous because they can be influenced a little easier. I’ve got a feeling the battle is not over…

I have the utmost admiration for women who stand up to the bullies. The antiabortion bullies are no different than the witch hunters (Think the scarlett letter days) in our early history–seeking ways to control women.

Let’s hope the Wichita City Council stands up to them as well. You know, the irony is that I’ll be you some of the antis down there HOPE that the clinic starts operating so they have a place to hang out on Saturdays!

Exactly it does seem that these anti’s lack a life and hanging out at a clinic fills a void they have in their lives. Strange but true…LOL

Sarah Rose, they are driven by a need to feel efficacious– and being a self-proclaimed “pro-lifer” is one way to feel like that without expending much energy, time, thought or money.

I find their “devotion” to standing in front of clinics pathetic. As if they are accomplishing anything. Sure, they’ll claim to “save a baby” because a woman turned around but they dont realize that women then probably called another clinic the next day that didn’t have protestors. Again, the good news in a general sense is that the young folks dont seem to be out there on a regular basis, just for “special occasions.”

See how easy it is to be a “hero,” Pat? Just show up. Disregard the fact that, as Woody Allen said, “Ninety-five percent of life is just showing up.”

Yes, it makes sense to change modus opneardi because unless you have the next great idea, changing the way things are otherwise done is the only way a company can grow and innovate.I’m not sure Google+ challenges anyone but rather brings a new player to the table. I doubt it has the tick-box which makes the millions of FB users want to switch, but it does attract the patron who likes to think a little more. The burn-out of social-media users mentioned above is surely going to grow because even in my little corner of the world people are telling me they are stopping using FB or Twitter for one reason or another. And all the kids at work use their Blackberry’s to chat. My other colleagues, who all wanted me to be their FB friend’ and still continue to post, just churn out an endless stream of tedium that makes me wonder what the point is? Where can all this possibly go?For a quick message to a friend I just send an SMS or two.Perhaps we expect too much from early innovators. Google did well, giving us a search engine second to none and found an efficient way of funding future development. The latest live search or whatever it’s real name is, works incredibly well and it’s a new twist others will struggle to catch up with but they will eventually. Bing maps now gives a very good alternative to Google Maps and their innovative Bird’s Eye view a new slant on the technology (sorry ;-D)If search isn’t sufficient Google have to reinvent themselves in someway, not simply absorb. Or maybe they can just lumber along as the richest and biggest etc

The jury is still out, Glenda, about whether or not the assassin had any help. No hard evidence yet. Yes, he hung out with them, attended rallies, etc. but did he actually tell one of his compatriots that he was going to kill Doctor Tiller? Not sure. And we’ll probably never know.

It has been reported that many of these Christian terrorists routinely meet and discuss their murderous tirades as “Justifiable Homicide.”
The web sites alone are easy enough to find.
Yes, they do work together.

I dont know, Sonia. The city council is more susceptible to political pressure than the Planning Commission. The anti-abortion folks will be all over them like glue. I also hope they have the courage to resist them!

I love your work-thank you for the updates.I have been wornikg on a project to develope farm co-operatives in Africa and Asia and this is precisely what is needed .I have been mentoring a womens group in Uganda and would like to help them improve their organization. They already have a successful craft business which sells products in the US and Europe. To have their own land/farm to provide food security/sales and equity would be ideal.Keep up the good work!!

Well, Paula, the fact is that murder and other acts that the “Christian Terrorists” engage in are already against the law. And if someone is willing to sacrifice their life there’s not much you can do about it.

The Police should be more diligent in arresting violent Christians and Christians planning violence.
They don’t seem to do much.
Christians cause so much suffering in the world.
Look at all the children priests have raped and murdered.

I hear ya, Paula, but there are only so many policepeople out there and they’ve got their hands full going after those who have already committed crimes. And the fact is that pro-life violence has decreased over the years.
But I gotta ask: priests have ‘MURDERED” children? Where do you get that?

It is nice first and foremost to dcpeiher what one subjectively and authentically wants devoid of social demands, expectations and pressures.Yet, to actually be able to face the world with that desire and achieve a productive, fulfilling and enjoyable outcome is fascinating, like any artist who’s creation is appreciated throughout his living.I am fairly well read in most Humanities and I have found that I could never stick with ONE specific Ideology or approach until I came across MINDFULNESS Whomever believes we are born into a life without a manual simply has missed the Mindfulness train.Good luck (with envy bad, bad, bad I know).I so appreciate your blog for its candor, openness and edifying presentation.Thank You Sir
