It’s hard to believe that it’s been twenty years…
On March 10, 1993 the “abortion wars” began in earnest. To be sure, before that day anti-abortion zealots had bombed abortion clinics, harassed doctors and staff (one doctor was actually kidnapped), verbally tortured women as they entered the abortion facilities and engaged in many other forms of what soon would be called “domestic terrorism.”
But on March 10, the first shots were fired – into the back of Doctor David Gunn.
Truth be told, when I got the call from Susan Hill, the owner of several abortion facilities throughout the nation, telling me a doctor had been killed, I wasn’t shocked because in the previous months, anti-abortion activity had been ramping up. Doctor Gunn worked at Susan’s clinic in Columbus, Georgia and at other separately owned clinics throughout the South. He was known as a “circuit rider” because he traveled from city to city in his beat up car, performing abortions for a few hours then moving on. Without his services (and energy), several clinics would have been forced to close because he was the only doctor. Women would have had to travel much further to receive abortion services.
One of David’s regular stops was the Pensacola Women’s Medical Services, a relatively new clinic in a town that was well known for its virulent anti-abortion zealots. David had mentioned to Susan that the anti-abortion activity had been picking up at the clinics he worked at and he decided to arm himself – to no avail.
That morning, David Gunn pulled up to the back of the clinic and parked in his usual space. There were a few protestors at the front of the clinic but when David pulled in, one of them made their way towards the parking space. When David got out of the car, he did not bother taking his gun. He took a few steps towards the clinic and Michael Griffin, a relatively new face to the protest scene, took out his gun and shot David in the back. He died instantly.
The murder was the lead story in every paper and on the network news. The inevitable had happened – an abortion doctor had been killed in the name of “saving babies.”
Soon thereafter, the dyke burst wide open. Over the next few years there would be more murdered doctors. Then, clinic staff people were targeted. Those who provided abortion services, no to mention their families, were gripped with fear. Suddenly they did not walk anywhere without checking their surroundings, looking under their cars for bombs, watching every protestor with a wary eye. The sale of bullet proof vests escalated dramatically, clinics hired security guards and purchased expensive metal detectors.
And, yes, some doctors decided to abandon their practice and some clinics closed. But the others hunkered down, refusing to surrender to the terrorists. Indeed, the Tom Petty song “I Won’t Back Down” became the anthem of abortion providers everywhere.
Ultimately, the violence waned for many years. That’s why the murder of Doctor George Tiller was such a shock because it had been a while since there was any violence of that nature. And it will no doubt happen again but the “good” news is that that wave of violence that was ushered in on the morning in Pensacola is just a memory for many. Still, we can never forget and we should use this “anniversary” to remember not just the sacrifice of David Gunn, but of the others who gave their lives to further the reproductive rights of women.
And rest assured that we will indeed not back down.

It seems almost as if these doctors need some military training to defend themselves. It makes no sense that we spend so much on the drug war and not on the things that matter most like protecting our teachers and doctors, the real celebrities.

The drug war is dumb.
It is pathetic. We need to protect our health care providers and their patients.

I’m not even sure, Glenda, what we are doing in the “drug war.” Haven’t heard much about it lately. And yes we need to protect patients but…see below

Thanks, Smith…Haven’t we won that drug war yet? 🙂 I agree that we need to protect teachers and doctors but as we have learned, if someone wants to kill someone and if they are willing to sacrifice their life for another life, there is not much you can do about it. It’s just the nature of things. I recall Doctor Britton, right after David was killed, went out and bought a bullet proof vest. About 16 months later, Paul Hill shot him in the face because he knew he had a vest on.

Pat…It hard to believe how much time has past since David Gunn was murdered is!! When I think back to that time and the fear that came over the whole community of abortion providers and their staffs…it makes my “PTSD”
rear it’s “ugly-head”!! My family and friends were very concerned…so I bought a GUN & A REALY NICE POCKETBOOK!! with a hidden compartment…just like a “FANSY GUN & HOLSTER”…that the boys love!!
In fact… it was so GOOD that every time I went through the “metal detector” at the court house the CPD checked it over very good!! After 1 solid week during my stalking trial…the officer said to me on the way out…Lorraine does this purse have a “hidden compartment?? I laughed and said yes and when I showed him…he could NOT believe it!! On the outside where it looked like the seam….there was Velcro….it pulled apart and you stuck your hand in and pulled out your gun!! (of course the gun wasn’t in there he just was observant enough to see it looked different!!
My point is… we all scrambled (or most of us did) to try to protect ourselves…I carried a gun more for my family than for me….because I felt that if they wanted to “murder you” they would and really there wasn’t much you could do!! When Chief Ruben Greenberg said…Lorraine you need to protect yourself because we won’t be there when they…if they decide to try and “hurt” you!! Exactly what Pat just said above!!
Really I believe that my protester(s)…Cathy Rider & her motley were more into trying to terrorize me…rather than “murder me”!! So I think “she…they” were titled appropriately when they were called “Domestic Terrorist”!!
But looking back to Pat…It hard to believe how much time has past since David Gunn was murdered is!! The names come back to me David Gunn, John Britton, James Barrett, Shannon Lowney, Leigh Ann Nichols, Robert Sanderson, Barnett Slepian, George Tille…MURDERED!! June Barrett shot, David Gandell shot at in his home and injured. Emily Lyons severly injured with life changing injuries!! (Five other individuals) injured when Shannon and Leigh Ann were murdered!! REST IN PEACE to you brave men and women…just trying to help women do what they thought was right for themselves personally and their families!! We must NEVER FORGET & WE MUST KEEP ABORTION SAFE & LEGAL…for them and all the women who lost their lives seeking illegal abortions…

It’s very tough, Rogie. As Lorraine would say, it’s just so exhausting. I cannot imagine the effect it had on Lorraine and others, having to be on guard at all times. Indeed, I recall Lorraine telling me one of the anti even disrupted her daughter’s high school graduation ceremony. How sick is that?

my proof of my pregnancy had the cincils name on it, a signature, and an actual due date. i didnt have blood work or anything done at that time so that wasnt on there, but what your talking about sounds fake i think. if it is real, im not sure if the pregnancy test and the blood work could be done at the same time. unless you can test for pregnancy through blood, which im not sure, but i do know when i had blood work done i had to go to a completely different lab/office to get it done.

Thank you for your words of remembrance. Dad would be pleased. The last few years have been heartbreaking as more and more of our sisters and brothers are terrorized, maimed, and killed; yet, our government fails to label the perpetrating organizations as the hate and terror groups they are. Until the unmitigated hate and blatant violent threats for doctors and staff providing a legal women’s health service is shunned and publicly derrided as insults to basic human decency, our families and friends–brave and resiliant though they are–will continue living under constant threat with one eye over their shoulder. Perhaps they will evolve into Janus type figures as an evolutionary defense. Dr. Tiller’s death hit hard. What hits harder is our friends, brother, sisters, husbands, wives, dauthers, and mothers continue to live under constant threat and our puritanical culture has learned nothing from the lives lost in the fight for reproductive freedom, equality, and choice. We need a revitalized response against hate. Please let me know if I may help.
