I am a C-Span junkie. I keep the channel on in my office all the time and every once in a while I hear the “A” word. That’s when I grab the remote and increase the volume. More often than not, it’s some Member of Congress talking about abortion and, in particular, the “horrors” of abortion. They stand there in the well of the House of Representatives, all spiffed up in their $700 suits and chastise the thousands of women who are “killing their babies” every day. They get themselves all worked up to the point where they barely contain themselves from calling these women “whores.”
But there’s more than meets the eye here in the nation’s capital.
The other day I had lunch with an old friend who runs an abortion facility in Washington, D.C. She’s very political, keeps track of congressional voting records and so we started talking about the latest legislative efforts on Capitol Hill to restrict access to abortion.
“What a bunch of hypocrites,” she said. I asked her what she meant. She chuckled and replied “we see them in here all the time.”
Intrigued, I asked her to elaborate.
“Anti-abortion Members of Congress and the Senate come here all the time. They’ll set up private appointments and bring in their wife, their girlfriend, a niece, you name it. They’ll pay extra money to use the clinic when it’s closed to other patients. They’ll come here and procure the abortion, then weeks later I’ll see them on television making some kind of speech about how people like me should be put out of business.”
I had heard rumors about this before but never heard a confirmation. Of course I was intrigued as to whom these elected officials were but, as she pointed out, she was prohibited from naming any names. I could tell she was dying to blurt out a name or two but, to her credit, she remained silent. She just shook her head and said “hypocrites.”
I’ve often wondered what it would be like if on one day every administrator of every clinic in the country just came out and named names. Not just anti-abortion Members of Congress but members of the state legislatures, governors, White House officials. We know they’re out there, we know they are harboring their little secret yet they do not hesitate to criticize OTHER women who have obtained abortions.
But the more I think about it, the more I realize that if they were exposed probably not much would happen. The anti-abortion politician would admit his complicity in this “truly unique situation” and would tell us how he and his wife/mistress/daughter had prayed to God for guidance before making the difficult decision. Then he would share with us how he has since asked the Lord for forgiveness (and received it), his constituents for the most part would applaud his courage and then would forgive him at the polls. For about a year or so he would be conspicuously silent during the public debate on abortion but would still continue to vote against abortion any time he could. Then one day he would reappear on the floor of the House to make the same old speech about “those women” who have had abortions.
So, we probably wouldn’t get anywhere but wouldn’t it be a lot of fun to reveal these hypocrites?
Hmmmmmm…..What if every doctor who has ever provided an abortion for one of these culprits just put a list together and had it published once they died?

Well, Pat, you’ve just posted another reason why the anti-abortion crusade is a “win-win” for the aborticentrics: While patients get harassed by them on the sidewalk, there are no “pro-choicers” standing vigil to get pictures of these people escorting their wives, daughters, girl friends and interns in. There’s simply not enough anger on the “pro-choice” side to fight fire with water.

I think you are right, Charles. There never was a lot of “anger” in that regard and there’s less nowadays. . But, of course, it probably would be impossible to get pictures of these folks cause the pro-choicers wouldn’t know who they were. Especially if that Senator or so was bringing his woman in for a “private” abortion.

I go back and forth on that one, Sarah Rose. On the national level we’re basically okay cause of Obama. In some states, however, it’s a nightmare in that those TRAP laws are forcing some clinics to close. That’s what really scares me, not these silly personhood amendments.

Here’s a bit of news that’s good for a laugh.
An anti-abortion student group in Roswell, New Mexico thought it would be a good idea to pass out hundreds of small rubber replicas of fetuses to students at two high schools.
As it turns out, this was not such a good idea:
Both schools experienced doll-related disruptions that day. Many students pulled the dolls apart, tearing the heads off and using them as rubber balls or sticking them on pencil tops. Others threw dolls and doll parts at the “popcorn” ceilings so they became stuck. Dolls were used to plug toilets. Several students covered the dolls in hand sanitizer and lit them on fire. One or more male students removed the dolls’ heads, inverted the bodies to make them resemble penises, and hung them on the outside of their pants’ zippers.

Regarding Pat’s Q from the previous thread: If a pro-choice activist knows that there is a bona fide abortion “mill” somewhere, should they report it to the authorities?
How would anyone from the outside really know? And what constitutes a “mill?” As I recall, some of Gosnel’s patients had concerns, but harassment at other clinics, cost and travel problems left them with no real alternative. But nobody really knew how bad Gosnel was until hospital reports led the authorities there.
I have been told that in PA (prior to Gosnell) the DOH would only act on a report from a patient or someone inside a clinic. I can rationalize this: otherwise anti-choicers would flood the DOH with mill claims on a daily basis, and the DOH would have no way to glean real problems from the harassment.
About 2 years ago, a pro-choice person told me that a “mill” clinic employee asked the pro-choicer to file out a DOH report on the clinic she worked at. The pro-choicer could not do so – hearsay. But the pro-choicer did help the employee fill out the DOH form. The pro-chocer did not know if that filing had any real effect, but many months later the mill was closed.

David, to be a “mill,” an abortion clinic must meet the Carol Everett standard– staff knowingly deceive a woman into agreeing to an abortion procedure, whether or not she is pregnant. Everett, a typical Texan in my opinion, did everything she could to make a quarter of a million dollars in her next year. She is now a “Christian counselor” who focuses on “post-abortion syndrome” as the major problem for her clients, since it was obviously the abortion she had that caused her to be evil.
There is simply no other criterion which can apply– volume of business, standards of hygiene, philosophical or religious affiliation.

Yeah, it’s a real tough one. And years ago, I gave a quote to the New York Times warning women about a particular clinic and that doc threatened to sue me. It’s a Catch 22. Meanwhile, down here in Washington, D.C., the Washington Post for the first time ran a large article on Doctor Gosnell on the second page.

Also I never thought about this but pro-lifers hold just as much responsibility for this as Gosnell himself, women went to his clinic because there were no protesters outside of his clinic and he charged lower rates.
By cutting off access to safe legal abortions gives women no other choice that obtaining an abortion from the likes of Gosnell.
You cannot ever force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term if she DOES NOT WANT THE PREGNANCY.

I don’t know, Sarah Rose, that might be stretching it. There were/are other clinics in the Philly area and the level of protestors varies, if they have any at all. Look, the guy preyed on vulnerable women to make a buck. We’re all looking for someone or some thing to blame but he sounds like a true sleazeball.

Oh I agree with you 100% Pat he did prey on the vulnerable, I wasn’t blaming the pro-lifers for Gosnell but more to the point that you cannot force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term because women will go to someone like Gosnell because they feel like they have no other place to go. You know that the women of Philly knew darn well what they were getting themselves into when they walked into his clinic and they would rather go to a back alley abortionist(and I do consider Gosnell a back alley abortionist) than carry a pregnancy to term.
Back alley abortionists still exist, and Gosnell was one in the truest sense of the word.

I actually wonder if the women who went to Gosnell actually got what they expected, i.e., so many people still think about “abortion mills” and I wonder when they walked in – since they probably had not seen a real nice clinic – if they were not surprised at all at the conditions?

Jeff Deeney, writing in The Atlantic, offers some sound advice to all the Gosnell hysteria.
He writes, “it seems to me almost inevitable that if a Kermit Gosnell were to exist, he would exist in Philadelphia. The poorest of America’s largest cities, saddled with a dysfunctional system of institutions that serve the poorest communities, a state level bureaucracy hostile towards us because we’re so poor and need so much, with a frequently broken system of oversight that has produced scandal after scandal, tragedy after tragedy in our child welfare system, our schools and our health services. Of course Gosnell, operating in plain sight for years, should have been stopped long before he was. However, I would further argue that if access to safe and legal abortions were expanded, and public funds used to provide them, there wouldn’t have been a Kermit Gosnell. The poor women upon whom Gosnell preyed would not be shunted into the black market if earlier on there had been safe, free services available to everyone in need.”
