In the past, I have made reference to a very helpful website named http://www.abortion.com. I do some consulting for the owners of that site, which is an Internet directory of abortion clinics across the country. Owners pay a monthly fee to be listed, just like the Yellow Pages.
The site has been around for a good ten years, if not more and, over the last few years, I’ve watched as some of the original clinics on the list have dropped off the site. One reason is that the number of abortions is declining (for whatever reason) and these offices are businesses so if they do not have the requisite number of patients to pay their expenses, they try to cut back on the amount of money they are spending. Some just close altogether.
Then there are the clinics that have closed because their state legislature has enacted restrictive regulations (under the totally ridiculous guise of “ensuring the safety of women”) that have forced them to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep their doors open. In Texas alone, I count at least eight clinics that have shut their doors in the last year because of their restrictive laws.
Now, the anti-abortion folks are no doubt applauding these developments. Indeed, I subscribe to LIFENEWS, an anti-abortion electronic newsletter, and every time a clinic closes they shout to the mountain tops (and always give credit to the anti-abortion movement) that another clinic has closed. And the assumption is that when a clinic closes, there are fewer abortions. More babies are saved! Praise the Lord!
Out of curiosity, I spent the last two weeks talking to the owners of those remaining clinics. And guess what’s happening, folks? The remaining clinics in Texas are being – in the words of one doctor – “swamped” with patients. Hmmmm, now ain’t that interesting?
Yep, several clinic doctors and/or owners told me that the number of patients they are seeing has increased since the other clinics shut their doors. And it stands to reason. That’s because the bottom line is that if a woman has an unwanted pregnancy and does not want to carry it to term, then she will seek an abortion. And no matter where she lives, she will get it.
The number of abortion facilities has decreased, no doubt about it, but the ones that are remaining – especially in rural areas like Texas – are seeing the number of abortion patients increase. They also report that more patients are coming from longer distances.
Of course, the anti-abortion advocates – who express their concern about the “safety of women seeking abortions” – don’t give a rat’s ass if a woman has to travel a few extra hundred miles to get to that clinic in western Texas. Who cares if she has to miss two days of work, travel across a state by herself on a bus, pay for someone to watch her kids?
The real strategy is to make it financially impossible for them to get an abortion but at least in Texas I’m not sure the strategy is working. And the irony is that these oh-so-compassionate anti-abortion folks are making it even more dangerous and expensive for women to obtain a legal abortion.

Pat, you know you’re my favorite pro-death writer and I should be your favorite reader because at times I catch a faux pas that others miss.
Here in paragraph 2 you write, “… the number of abortions is declining…” and in 6 you write, … “the number [of abortions] has increased…”
You can’t have it both ways. If the number of murders recently has increased, then you can’t say closing the mills reduces that number. If, on the other hand, the number has decreased, you can say that. So which is it?

Where in P6 does Pat write that? Maybe you mean P7 where Pat writes “the ones that are remaining – especially in rural areas like Texas – are seeing the number of abortion patients increase” because others have shut.
Here’s a simple arithmetic example: 20,000 / 20 = 1000
18,000 / 12 = 1500
I guess the nuns were so busy paddling your butt that they skipped some arithmetic lessons.

John, I might well be criticized for what I am going to say to you; I will accept that criticism as I have a few comments to make directly to you.
Many of us appreciate constructive discourse between the two perspectives of the abortion issue. There is much to share and learn, all the while maintaining whatever one’s position is. Repetitive attacks, name calling, and such only invite the same. Each person you address/attack is a decent human being. I would like to think the same of you, albeit your seeming acceptance of people being murdered for your cause does not speak well of you. Murdering people is unconscionable and it sickens me that you would so disrespectfully address those who survived the victims, admirers, or supporters of those murdered. Have you no conscience? Oh, I know, you will resort to your view that murder is what pro-choice people promote – they do not and I know that you know that to be true, regardless what you may say. They promote the empowerment of women to make reproductive decisions without interference from government – or religion. You know full well that much as you consider the fetus a person (and, yes, I do respect your view however much I disagree), the fetus is not legally considered a person. If the day comes in which your cause achieves that status for the fetus, we can have a different conversation. For now, fetus does not equal person and there is acknowledgement that, allowed to fully develop, the fetus can become a person.
It is a shame that you have chosen to use a dialect similar to that of Hannibal Lecter and appear to have no purpose to the time you spend here. A purpose driven life behaves much differently in words and actions. There are plenty of people opposed to abortion who contribute their views with respect that deserves respectful responses. In fact, several weeks ago I was quite engaged with someone you may know on another site. Our dialogue ended with both of us lamenting the fact that people cannot be more respectful This woman and I disagreed on everything and yet we were both able to share and learn. Ultimately, how you behave at this blog only reinforces to others the stereotypes of anti-choice people, especially men.
My words will likely have no meaning to you and there is a greater chance that you will continue to selectively represent the Christian principles that only meet your view. Nonetheless, I wanted to take the time to let you know that it would be so much nicer if you, and those like you, would actually attempt meaningful discourse as opposed to the absurd attacks that invite (and often deserve) attacks in response.

Kimmie, this is nothing but a lecture. To change it into “meaningful discourse” you can’t just accuse me of “absurd attacks” in general; you would have to accuse me of a specific absurd attack.
In other words, select something I say you think is absurd. Then I could either agree with you or disagree, and we would be getting some place.

Pat – regarding the deluge of patients in Texas, what seems to escape the anti-choicers is that the Mexican pharamcias are more accessible for many women. The data is starting to collect on women crossing the border for drugs known to cause or increase the likelihood of abortion and the “black market” for drugs at flea markets or other venues. Thankfully, RU486 is likely being used in some cases but it is not as easy to get. I could not agree with you more that as much as they rejoice at clinic closings, their legislative efforts have done little more than cause inconvenience for those with the means to travel and actually cause grave physical danger – or death – to women who feel that their only alternative is drugs. This certainly does not sound like protection of women to me.

You have a problem if you get your needs met playing Hannibal Lecter as Kimmie referenced. As a pro-choice person I am glad you stick around because you definitely give affirmation of the insanity in the anti-abortion activist population. The whole murder thing you promote is beyond what normal people do to get attention for their view point. Maybe one day you will end up with Rudolph in jail yourself.

The other day I said that when some women turn away from a clinic, they probably go to another one down the street. And John actually said “you might be right.” I was surprised at that response but I also appreciated it. Now John (nor I) are the greatest debaters in the world, or the greatest and clearest writers, so I take a lot of this stuff with a grain of salt. All I can say is I actually appreciate John participating and, in some unusual cases, actually giving us some “credit.” As for name calling and all of that stuff, both sides are guilty of that.

I always appreciate the views of others. Yes, both sides “name call” but there is a bit of a difference in the “how” the name calling is done. This is true for each polarizing issue out there. Some of it unfortunately motivates sick people to do sick things. Glad that you liked the “you might be right” Pat. Kind and sincere words have value and meaning. That is for sure.

Now Kimmie, you have to be fair here. Both sides do not “name call.” Your side does; I can give you two dozen examples. My side doesn’t — I am the only one on my side, and I don’t. This might also answer Pat’s question about why I seem to prefer to defend the pro-life side by myself.

I was thinking more generically, i.e., that people who represent both sides of the debate engage in name-calling. Hell, for the most part that is how Amreicans engage in “debate.” They spew their talking points, don’t listen to the response and then denegrate the responder. But, John, don’t you think calling us “killer’s helpers” is name calling? Indeed, have you ever used the word “pro-choice” to describe us? Recall I have often referred to you “pro-lifers”.

Good questions. I call the abortionist a killer. All of us have to agree that he kills and that you do help him. What or whom he kills is the argument.
Many on our side would call him a murderer. That’s name-calling and it’s why I get nervous when other pro-lifers start talking. He’s not a murderer legally, and morally that’s for God to decide. (I think God will more likely designate us pro-lifers the murderers; after all we’ve been given the grace to see what’s going on and yet after 40 years in the USA more than a million people are still being murdered annually.)
As for the other “name-calls” I’m not so sure. We have to let our opponents use their own language, don’t we? That’s why “anti-choice” and “anti-women” is not name-calling while “stupid jack-ass,” “sick people,” and “creepy crap” is.

JD says abortion providers are killers, and those who support them are also killers because “he kills (sidebar: JD assumes all abortion docs are male) and you do help him.”
By that reasoning, I am 100% sure JD is also a killer. Maybe just a spider or fly or ant, but he kills. If not, JD do you eat meat or fish or poultry that someone else kills? You’d pay for that, so you’d pay for killing which is an extreme form of helping. Even if you are a vegetarian, crops are killed to feed you.

By the way, I use the masculine pronoun because most people killers are male. I know a few are female. One of the ones I persuaded to take a different kind of job is a woman, Dr. Mary Blanks of Princeton, NJ.
