The silence is almost deafening.
The other day, as I was holed up in my house during a horrendous thunderstorm, I took out some old scrapbooks and ran across a bunch of yellowed articles from the days when I ran the National Coalition of Abortion Providers. I got a little nauseous when I read the headlines in USA Today (“Abortion Doctor Murdered in Pensacola”) and other periodicals recounting the days in the mid-1990s when our doctors were being assassinated on a regular basis. I recalled how it almost got to the point where I wasn’t surprised when I got the call.
That’s how it was on the morning of October 24, 1998 when clinic owner Susan Hill (now deceased) called me and, in that sweet Southern accent, said “well, they got another one.” My pulse barely quickened, I knew exactly what she meant. I soon learned that it was Doctor Bart Slepian, a good friend who performed abortions in Buffalo. The only thing that was different this time was this doctor was in the “sanctity” of his home and was killed in front of his children. James Kopp had positioned himself in Bart’s back yard and just fired. This might not come out right, but I think somehow we had come to accept that a doctor might get murdered in their clinic which was the “battleground.” But, now, even standing in your own kitchen was not safe. Over the next few months, my young boys insisted that the blinds be drawn at night in our house. On that day, though, upon hearing the news of Bart’s death, I simply drove into my office and issued an “Emergency Alert” to our clinics across the country informing me of the latest murder of one of their colleagues. Just going through the drill.
Then, for many years, there was silence.
For almost 11 years, not one doctor was murdered by a pro-life assassin. At NCAP, our focus started to change from what kind of bullet proof vests were the best value to how to advertise your services on the Internet. The security detail at our conventions was reduced, attendees didn’t look at every stranger as a potential assailant. Oh, to be sure, at the clinics they still took precautions but you can only stay on Red Alert for so long and you start to let your guard down.
Then, the silence was shattered.
Six years ago today, on May 31, 2009, the target was Doctor George Tiller. George performed third trimester abortions in Wichita, Kansas and was shot in the head as he performed his usher duties at his local church. Shot in his church? WTF? The telephone lines burnt up that day. By that time I had left NCAP but I was still plugged in and George had been a good friend as well. On several occasions we had talked about the possibility of his being assassinated one day and while he took the threat seriously, he was not obsessed with the possibility. So, when the call came from an old friend telling me he had been killed, we cried. But despite the tears, I have to say it was not a shock. The venue was a shock, perhaps, but not the actual act. George had always been a potential target. And he knew it.
That was six years ago today.
And in those six years, not a peep.

Don’t be ashamed, John. The fact is that killing an abortion doctor is not going to save all of those little babies from being “pulled apart.” I can tell you for a fact – and Lorraine can confirm – that when you folks killed a doc, someone either replaced that doc (e.g., Lee Carhart replacing George Tiller) or the women went to a nearby clinic the next day (e.g., when David Gunn was killed, a crapload of women made appointments over in Mobile). So, my friend, hold your head up high! Greet the new day with vim and vigor. You have nothing to be ashamed about!

I don’t know. I’ll bet if killers really believed their lives were in danger, they’d have second thoughts. I can think of only three killers killed in the past forty-five years of legal murder. That wouldn’t scare me enough to quit or to avoid joining in if I were one of those adding directly to the carnage.
And since I don’t have the courage to do what needs to be done, I attack their reputations rather than their lives. If you were God, Pat, would you give me a pass?

I dont think God would give you a pass, John. I know the argument: if someone was going to attack my child, I would kill that person if I had to. But then we go our different ways in that it’s just not the same going into a clinic to “kill” a 8 week fetus. Also, doctors did have second thoughts in those days and some did quit. But there are always going to be those stalwarts who are going to hang in there. Indeed, I think there were some docs who actually thrived to some extent on the potential danger.

The so-called “pro-lifers” are, quite simply, bullies. They do what they do simply because they know they can get away with it.
Notice that their opposition to abortion often does not include abortions for themselves or their daughters. This is yet another indication of the psychological issues underlying their militancy. They need to act out.
If they did not have abortion as an excuse to act out, they would need to find another reason.

Good point, Charles about pro-lifers supporting abortions for their daughter/wife or even themself. I’ve written about that in the past because it did/does happen. We always laughed and I always begged our docs to expose that person but they never did because of doctor-patient confidentiality.

My worst protester had …”3″ abortions….BEFORE she went to a “pregnancy crisis center” for a pregnancy test and found out to quote her “it was a baby”!! My question was and still is, “What did you think it was”??? If you are pregnant and you don’t terminate or miscarry in 9 mos. you will have a baby! Her answer was and still is ridiculous!! Of course with that 4th pregnancy she got married and lived happily ever after!! Except…she was my worst nightmare for many years…until she was convicted of stalking me and federal court gave us a permanent injunction to keep her away from me & the clinic!!

I’d argue that those who kill doctors and who protest outside abortion clinics are equally devoid of any moral grounding. From their micro aggressions to their final assault with a bullet, these [mostly] white men and women communicate nothing but the contagion of their own obsessions. Their destructive indignation propels their hate to be acted out under the guise of virtue. But, peel away the thinly-veiled veneer of virtue and you will see their obsession to fix what they see as broken. Moreover, you will see that their obsession and judgmental attitude illustrate their profound disconnection to the heart and soul of women and their doctors.

Pat, I have read some of your past articles regarding Butyric Acid attacks. I have just experienced this attack and am desperately trying to track down anyone who may be able to assist in knowing how to clean up after these types of attacks. In any of your past research, have you found any resources or people that I may be able to contact in order to save the structure. I am finding the smell is only the bad part, the reaction to the acid is even worse. I would appreciate any help you can give.

I do not run a clinic. Someone (a pest control company) injected the chemical into my home and it is extremely strong nasty stuff that is suppose to be “non lethal” but the amount used in my home has caused very bad respiratory effects and at this point, I cannot even enter the home. I am just trying to find if anyone knows how to neutralize it so I can return home. From reading on line, the last recorded similar incidents were in clinics back in the 90’s. I tried tracking down someone from any of those clinics but it was 20 years ago….I would appreciate any contacts that may help me. Sorry to take up space as it is really a different issue from what you are addressing, but your group seemed to have more knowledge than anyone I have been able to find so far.

:”What about a 9 week or a 15 week or a 22nd week?” you ask. No difference; things change at non-medically aided viability – 27 weeks – because only then is the fetus its own entity.

As usual, John Dunkle does a masterful job of controlling the argument and concealing the fact that his people’s philosphy “rescued” Ted Bundy, who grew up to kill about 65 ex-fetuses, all of them the young women Dunkle fantasizes that he is rescuing.
The disregard of so-called “pro-lifers” for real human life is appalling.

I got ambushed today, Pat, outside of killer Joey Lebed’s house in Cheltenham. Here’s how it began:
him — */#%&&@
me — I don’t talk to adolescents
him — I’m not an adolescent.
me — Then don’t talk like one.
him — How old are you?
me — 80
him — You got me by 3.
me — Then you got 3 years to grow up.
him — %&&/*$#
He calmed down after that and we talked for a long time. He led the ACLU in New Jersey and defended the free speech right of the neo-Nazis when they marched in Bloomfield, I think. A while later one of them phoned him to thank him for what he did. The guy told him that to show their appreciation they were going to allow him to pick the scent to use when they gassed him.
This has nothing to do with our topic, of course, and we argued mostly about baby killing, but I had to tell someone.

Pat,
I wonder if your webmaster might consider adding Backline to your resources because they promote a fully comprehensive approach to decisions about pregnancy?
Backline promotes unconditional and judgment-free support for people in all their decisions, feelings and experiences with pregnancy, parenting, adoption and abortion.
Through direct service and social change strategies, Backline is building a world where all people can make the reproductive decisions that are best for their lives, without coercion or limitation, and where the dignity of lived experiences is affirmed and honored.

I just checked out Backline. It’s the pro-death imitation of pro-life organizations like Lifeline. In other words it offers everything those organizations offer, but will also help to kill the child if that’s what you want.
But I don’t think we need to worry. Those types of prolife organizations haven’t been able to reduce the annual number of murders, so I don’t think Backline will will be able to add to it.
(I wonder why they changed “Life” to “Back.”)

John, you have got to be cheering! News reports show abortions are down in nearly ever state! Opps… they are down because use of contraception, especially long term implants, is way up. But they are up in anti-choice Louisiana because lots of women from even more anti-choice Texas who can’t get abortions in Texas are going to Louisiana.

I tried posting a link but it seems to have been removed. However, JD, you should learn to do your own research. Nevertheless, LTIs can last for three years and basically stop an egg from being released.
So no egg means no fertilization and therefore, even in your demented, misogynistic idiocy, no “baby” and no “murder.”

I would like to recommend David Cohen and Krystan Connon’s book, “Living in the Crosshairs: The Untold Stories of Anti-Abortion Terrorism.” Their stories about different providers, especially when taken as a whole, are riveting as well as shameful. In a conversation with the authors, it’s evident to me that this country has failed to name the anti-abortion activists as domestic terrorists. This failure is the height of our country’s moral cowardice. Using the FBI’s definition of domestic terrorism as the “intent to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a government, or affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping” (FBI web site), the anti-abortion activists are clearly domestic terrorists and should be treated as such. Read the book. It’s a meticulously researched and beautifully written account of an entire population under siege.

Alice, it’s the REPUBLICAN PARTY that is responsible for fomenting the anger of powerless and vindictive people. They encourage them to be so-called “pro-lifers.” Blinded by their anger, those people are putty in the hands of political operatives who are stripping them of a comfortable retirement, affordable homes, good education, affordable health care and a livable income.
So effective have the Republicans been that those people will continue to vote against their own self-interest. You cannot persuade them otherwise.
