There is a lot of talk these days about guns. In response to the massacre of the day, the debate ensues: should we ban guns, regulate guns, eliminate the current restrictions, mandate that everyone own a gun? On and on the discussions go and there never is a conclusion.
Hey, Pat, why the hell are you talking about guns? This blog is about abortion stuff, isn’t it?
Well, yes, but I have a little story that blends the two issues and explains where I come out on the issue of guns.
As the Executive Director of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers, one of my main tasks was to do media interviews. Whenever a doctor was killed or a clinic blown up, I’d get the call and I would somberly rail against the violence. I was on the Donohue Show, Good Morning America, Nightline, you name it. Never did the Steve Harvey show. I did those shows because our doctors were for the most part afraid to show their face, lest they become the next target.
Every time I did an interview, the calls to our office from pro-lifers would increase. Not very nice calls. Not direct threats but enough to make my stomach turn. After the murder of Doctor Bart Slepian and another round of interviews, the FBI decided it was time to make a visit. They were just looking for as much information as they could get about clinic violence, threats, stalking, etc. At the end of the interview, however, one of the agents said “considering your visibility, we recommend you carry a firearm.”
WTF? Are you kidding me?
I politely told them there was no way in hell I would carry a gun and while they could not order me to get one, they were pretty adamant that I should at least look into it. Ironically, right across the street from my office in Old Town, Alexandria, there was actually a small gun shop. A small place on the upper floor of a colonial townhouse, hardly anyone knew it was there. So, one day out of curiosity I walked over. I was greeted by a crusty bearded southern type guy.
“Hi, I’ve been told that I should be carrying a firearm. I’ve never touched a gun in my life so I have no idea what I should be looking at.”
He asked me to show him my hand and he started exploring his case of guns. “Obviously, we’re talking a handgun here, one that you can hide in your clothes.” He took a handgun out of the case and handed it to me. “Tell me how that feels.”
I held the gun, wrapped my hand around the handle and slipped my finger into the trigger. Thinking I was Clint Eastwood, I pointed the gun away from the clerk and aimed at the clock on the wall. Then I started to perspire, my hand started shaking violently and I became nauseous.
I put the gun down on the counter and told the owner that I had to think about this. I walked outside and was making my way to my lunch stop when I started envisioning walking up the street and having some anti-abortion terrorist come up behind me intent on doing me harm. But, before he could strike I calmly reached into my pocket, grabbed my gun, turned around and shot him in the head. Yeah, right.
Realizing I was not Clint Eastwood, I then had a more troubling thought.
I’m walking up the same street and a friend of mine notices me ahead of him. He runs up behind me and puts his hand on my shoulder, surprising the hell out of me. My adrenaline starts flowing, I don’t hear him call my name, I reach into my coat and turn around shooting.

December 28, 2015 at 3:43 pm
That should be, “so-called ‘pro-lifers,’ ” Pat… Never refer to them as “pro-lifers.” They are not.
I won’t be surprised when they start showing up at clinics carrying openly, eventually segueing to draw and shoot under the aegis of the “stand your ground” laws.

Yeah, guns, people wouldn’t go for that. But what if we defended ourselves the way you attack us? What if we put you in a powerful wind tunnel that first ripped off your extremities, and then your head? Or dipped you in a saline solution that melted your flesh? Or forced you to swallow a poison “pill” of our own invention? What about then? People might go for that/

Just to clarify, John, so you know what you are talking about – abortion doctors no longer use saline solution. Sure, they rip off the extremities in late term cases so you got that one right. Also, we don’t ‘force” the woman to take a pill. Gimme a break.

The issue is not pain. We kill a lot lot things that feel pain, It is, as the Supreme Court determined, a woman’s right to control her own body. The fetus needs the womb; the woman does not need the fetus. Until it is viable, she gets to make that decision, just as she can decide to remove a wart or a cancer tumor.

HMS gives its students intensive education in overcoming their horrible impediments to communicate as best they can after they turn 21 and are put back on the street (or in their parents’ home, etc.).
A wheelchair that will make it possible for HMS to teach this child how to communicate with the world costs around $40,000. Why don’t you step up to the plate for him/her? If it’ll help, I’ll make sure it’s a girl.

Most of the most ardent anti woman and abortion people believe that ensoulment occurs at the moment of fertilization.
From this lunacy, is derived all the babelic nomenclature anti abortion people use, making the rest of us staring to understand any internal logic in the beliefs antis express.
If they believe in ensoulment then it is easier to understand their thought processes in a more logical ( even if severely flawed) manner.

Mr. Dunkle prefers that a child be raised to be tortured every day than a fetus be aborted. In fact, he is so in favor of children being subjected to lives of torture, neglect, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, starvation, stultification, hunger, ignorance and desperation that he will insist that he will not sacrifice his time, money or talents to do anything for them.
So, the questions are, why does he act to protect only photo-human life rather than actual human beings? Why is he so fixated on abortion that he cannot find pity in his heart for the real child whose existence he coerced?

Emily, at bottom of the so-called “pro-life” fixation on abortion is their fear of death. Humans are, as far as we know, the only species capable of contemplating personal mortality.
We can do so to the point where it will paralyze us, but as we know that it might, we struggle to repress it. Since simply repressing it would also paralyze us, we adopt ways to distract ourselves from its horror. We usually do this by adopting a religious or philosophical framework which will let us believe yeah, we’re going to die, but not for a long time or when we do, it’ll be no big deal.
Religions generally offer the latter, and many, many people take comfort in that belief.
However, there are people whose religious faith, despite their claims to the contrary, is so weak that they can’t really bring themselves to believe it. They might be fearful that when they die they will go to Hell, or they might not be able to convince themselves that their religion is truthful about the afterlife. Mr. Dunkle is one of the former, by the way.
Both of this type will act out in this world to prove to themselves that indeed they deserve either an afterlife in Heaven or a lasting memory among those they leave behind– a status of hero, like Washington, Lincoln or Mother Teresa.
But they find it’s too hard to be an actual hero, to spend a life eating scanty food and tending to dying beggars day after day, or putting their lives on the line in an Occupy protest or labor strike.
So they look for a way to construct their own hero scenario. They choose a victim that can never refute their claims (hence, no teen delinquent services for them). They pick of course the most universal villain imaginable– Death. And then they tailor a message to try persuade society that they are fighting Death and therefore they are heroes, even though they do not risk their lives, their fortunes or their time off.
It is an allegorical battle: Abortion represents Death, they represent God, and the fetus represents them. If they can “rescue” a fetus in this world, it provides them with (illusory) proof that God will save them.
Read Ernest Becker’s “Denial of Death” to better understand the need to be a hero and gain society’s everlasting gratitude by losing the only life you know for sure that you have.

Too bad your faith isn’t strong enough that you believe God loves you enough to give you eternal life. Your present lack of faith compels you to prove to yourself that God will “rescue” you. I know a lot of Christians who are comfortable in that belief, who consequently act from love and grant others the freedom to choose how many children they want to care for.
