OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Senate approved legislation Thursday to essentially prohibit abortions in Oklahoma after six weeks of pregnancy.
The Senate voted 36-8 for the bill, which now heads to the House for consideration.
The bill by Republican Sen. Paul Scott of Duncan would prohibit doctors from performing an abortion, beginning at six weeks of pregnancy, if a fetal heartbeat or brain waves are detected.
“Doctors take an oath to protect life, so this will also hold them accountable for that oath by taking away the licenses of any who violate this law,” Scott said in a statement.
But many women are unaware that they are pregnant at six weeks, said Tamya Cox-Toure, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes.
“The purpose of this bill is to deny access to a legally protected right to abortion,” Cox-Toure said.
Cox-Toure said there are also no exceptions in the bill for cases of rape, incest or potential harm to the mother.
Oklahoma currently prohibits abortions after 20 weeks, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights.

Opponents of such legislation should attach riders committing the state to provide $260,000 in subsidies to help the pg woman raise the child through high school.
It would only be fair, and it would certainly be a shot in the arm for the economy.

Johnnt, remember when you said protestors are mostly women? I was placed in contact with an AWC escort. They said there are five regular protestors. A male in mid 50s who is there multiple days a week, screams loadly and occassionally ends up in court. A male of similar age, usually 2 days a weeks who also screams a lot and prays for the escorts. A third male of similar age or maybe older who comes on Saturdays and mostly just shouts with what might be a Brooklyn accent. A woman, somewhere in her late 40 to early 60s who is reasonably regular on Saturdays but usually arrives later than the three males and does not say much. You, who use to come multiple days but now only once a month on the day of the choir (Escort guesses that age is keeping you in Reading most of the time. Do you still harrass teenage girls at the schoolbus stop?).
The choir (anywhere from 15 to 30 people, men and women) shows up once a month, lines up across the street and sings. At that time, you stop protesting and join in singing. A scattering of other men and women show up infrequently. Bottom line is that, similar to my experience, the serious protestors are older and mostly male.

You got mew there, Dave. You’re pretty good. The only thing you got wrong is the harassing at the school bus stop. What’s that all about?

I have a recollection from a few years ago that you said you protested at or near a school bus site in Reading. You claimed you did so when students, including teenage girls were waiting. I expresed surprise that police let you do so. That you would do so does not seem out of character. However, if my memory is wrong, I appologise. But you are an old guy likely with a failing memory, so maybe you did and you have forgotten.

Dang, Dave, you’re even better than I thought. I still don’t remember it but I bet you’re right.
