One of my dearest friends in the world is Doctor Leroy Carhart. Doctor Carhart is a physician who performs abortions in the tiny hamlet of Bellevue, Nebraska. He has been doing abortions for decades – and, I should add, he has been doing late term abortions over those years. In the last ten years or so, he became an outspoken advocate for abortion rights and, in fact, years ago he challenged the “Partial Birth Abortion Act,” a case that ultimately made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In addition to working in Nebraska, for years Doctor Carhart had been traveling to Wichita, Kansas where he helped out Doctor George Tiller, a specialist in very late term abortions. As we all know by now, Doctor Tiller was murdered almost one year ago and soon thereafter, his clinic – his beautiful clinic – was shut down.
But Lee Carhart came to the rescue. Within hours of the murder, he was proudly announcing to the media that he would take over the late term abortion doctor mantle in order to help all of those women who normally would have gone to Doctor Tiller. He was all over the media, he started giving more speeches, and he pumped up his website. For good reason, he was applauded for his courage and his loyalty to his dear, departed friend.
A few weeks after Doctor Tiller’s murder, I caught up with Lee at a memorial service in Washington, D.C. He shared some wonderful thoughts with the crowd and afterwards I was escorted to a private room to see him. It had been years, so we had a good hug, a few tears were shed and then I looked him directly in the eye and said “Lee, shut the hell up.”
He was incredulous. For years, working through the National Coalition of Abortion Providers, I encouraged him (and his colleagues) to speak openly about what he did, to no longer hide in the shadows anymore. My argument was that if abortion doctors were open about what they did and talked honestly about their work, then it would prevent the anti-abortion movement from filling in the information gap with their own distorted interpretation of things. So, Lee started talking – and talking and talking. Ultimately, he became one of our leading spokesmen.
But now I was telling him to shut up.
“Lee,” I said as I put my hands on his shoulders, “you now have a lot of patients that are relying on you. You need to be here for them. But when you go on television, you’re making yourself a target for some nut ball out there who might get the notion of taking out the next George Tiller.”
He was a little stunned at first and, as he often does, he started mumbling about how he understood what I was saying but….
“But what?” I screamed. “You’ve got an obligation to thousands of women and to George Tiller. You need to be there every day for your patients. You cannot go around making speeches everywhere, walking through crowds. You’re gonna get yourself shot, Lee, and I don’t want to have to come to another memorial service.”
He listened but I don’t think he heard me.
And yesterday I saw an announcement that he will be speaking at the national conference for the National Organization for Women in Boston in a few weeks.
Oh well…..Go get ’em, Lee.

I’m back, Pat. Eight days gone and I’ll bet I missed a lot. Common, now, here, Lee is a dope. I’ve seen him twice on video and you’re not the only one he mumbles to. That’s his way of talking, and thinking.

I dont know if I would say that Lee is a “dope.” He just has that Baby Huey way about him and, yes, he does mumble. I mean, you can’t expect every doctor to be a rousing speaker now, can you?

You know why Doctor Tiller was murdered, it simply becuase he murdered a lot of babies. Whatever you planted on earth it’s the same thing that you will cath at the end. Remember the golden rule: “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want to do unto you”. We are here on earth to save lives not to kill. And to Doctor Carhart, please save babies and mothers. A mistake committed by mother could not be corrected by another mistake.

Abortion is legal. Abortion is safe and the Womens choice.
Murdering a doctor that performs Abortion is very illegal.
Mary, should anyone associated with abortion be subject to execution illegally?
Mary how many babies do you save daily?

I was absent for a while and like John o lost a lot of interesting posts.
I don’t think that Doctor Lee is wrong on speaking up, wrong are people who wants do demand what other people have to say…
Abortion is not right or wrong, it is a complex situation where the pregnant woman has to make a choice to have or not that baby… I am always pro to make people think, for example:
A woman who’s family in under a lot of difficulties, not much money for extra expenses, and let’s say no insurance or even medicare… but sex is free and for that moment she can even forget that they are having a tough time right, and out of the blue she becomes pregnant… what now?????
She should take that pregnancy to the term and after the baby is born give it to adoption??? Hummmmmm as i said in one of my first posts here, adoption is no easy task at all… so let’s not say that… I particularly don’t agree with all the abortions done in US, but let’s face it it is better than to have the orphanages full of children that don’t get adopted and grow up to become a bad person, NOT all of them, i know that too, but that is a reality… It is easy to point fingers but so hard to wear the shoes of the woman who decides to have an abortion…
I believe that Doctor Lee should get security so he won’t end up killed.

I don’t like the fact that I asked Lee to be quiet. But women are flying to see him from all over the world and he needs to be there for them. There are so many other people who can speak for the pro-choice movement. Also, Lee has some protection to some extent. So did Doctor Britton. The day he was killed, the murdered killed his bodyguard first. No one, not even the President, if totally protectable…

I”m curious, Mary. Do you think that doctors who perform abortions should be murdered?

Well, I think Dr. Carhart needs to speak up and not hide himself in the shadows of the pro choice movement.
If he is for abortion and do late terms let him tell the world what he is about. People need to start excepting that not everything is a fairy tale in life. Yes people have abortions everyday in this country and all over the world and we need to be more candid about it.

Mary,
I’m sorry but I believe you are a square minded person.
Are you adopting the babies that are not being aborted???
Don’t be so quick to judge, you and I have no idea what brought those women to make such a decision and if someone was supposed to be paying for what they did wouldn’t that person be the mother who’s child is being “killed” by her own choice?
Dr. Tiller only did a service by request. He did not solicit women to have abortions.

What does the fear of God do Mary??
Does it save lives?
Does it put food on your table?
Does it pay your bills?
I don’t think so. Many tragedies occur where the people are really faithful and are fearful of God. How do you explain that?

I do not think that Doctor Carhart should be so public. It accomplishes absolutely nothing. If a woman needs his services, she will find him. After all, what is the chance that a woman who needs a late term abortion just saw Doctor Carhart on CNN? However, there are lots of nuts out there, wanting to make a name for themselves, who are also watching CNN….

Abortion providers, and Dr. Carhart, thank you for providing abortion care.
Most women appreciate a doctor that will perform an abortion for her when needed.
Abortion doctors should be thanked every day.

Actually, Lisa, every March 10 is “National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.” That is the day that Doctor David Gunn was murdered, becoming the first abortion doctor to be killed for doing what he believed was right. On that day, the public is encouraged to contact their local abortion clinic/s and just say “thanks.” Of course, you can do that on any day but March 10 is a special, national day of recognition that has been observed since 1993.
