The pro-life terrorist boarded the Greyhound bus in Houston in early March, 1994, carrying two duffel bags stuffed with semiautomatic weapons. His destination was Pensacola, Florida where he planned to conduct what the FBI later described as a “Beruit-style” massacre at a meeting of the members of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers.
Just a year earlier, a pro-life assassin murdered Doctor David Gunn as he was entering the office of the Pensacola Medical Services, one of several facilities where he performed abortions. The murder was national news, casting a pall amongst his colleagues in the field and NCAP members were determined to get to the funeral in Tennessee, but a major snow storm dashed those plans. Months later, abortion clinic staff across the country still yearned to get together for that much- needed “group hug.” Ultimately, NCAP announced it would host a one year anniversary event at the actual site where Doctor Gunn was killed. Right across the street from the clinic was an open air amphitheatre – a perfect spot for a series of speeches and rememberences.
Meanwhile, a pro-life activist named Daniel Ware took notice and made his plans.
The “David Gunn Memorial” went off without a hitch and it was a great opportunity for the approximately 80 abortion doctors, staff and clinic owners to finally get together and console each other. The evening before, however, I received a call informing me that a man had been arrested in Houston who apparently was headed for Pensacola to disrupt our event. No other details were offered and the next morning we told the attendees about the incident but no one seemed too concerned. After all, they lived with the threat of terrorism every day. Instead, they were intent on going to the clinic where David Gunn was killed.
Years later, I was at a conference about how local police forces protect (or don’t protect) abortion clinics. At some point, a reporter with the Los Angeles Times casually mentioned how the FBI had successfully thwarted a “guy named Daniel Ware who was in Pensacola intending to wipe out members of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers at a David Gunn Memorial.” I almost fell off my chair. I had never been told that Ware had actually been in Pensacola while we were there.
I later learned that a pro-life activist had tipped off the FBI that a man was in Pensacola with the intention of killing as many abortion providers as possible during the memorial event. The FBI then started casting a wide net, interviewing numerous local pro-life activists. Although all of the facts are not known, it seems that Daniel Ware got wind that the feds were onto his plot and he immediately turned around and went back to Houston. He was arrested when he got off the bus.
It’s hard to describe the feeling of knowing that someone was in the vicinity of an event you were hosting and he was preparing to kill you. As I celebrated Saint Patty’s Day this weekend, I couldn’t help but thinking about how lucky we all were back in March, 1994.

i would say that i was lucky as well and didn’t know it either.
if ware had succeeded, how many of my choicer buds would i not now have?
who else do i know that was there that day?
the thought that a group of people could all be murdered at one time for simply wanting to be together to mourn the loss of a common loved one is chilling.
thank heavens that the pro-life activist was actually pro-life and not just an anti. otherwise, the feds might not have been alerted and ware might have succeeded in his evil plan.

I recall that Lorraine was there, Rogie. Maybe she will chime in. Also, I’m told that John Burt was the guy who turned in Ware to the feds, but I was also told that the feds were really “pressuring him” whatever that means….
This was also the event where we had only one protestor – Paul Hill. And about five months later he killed Doctor Britton and his bodyguard. Very chilling stuff indeed…

omg!
i remember you speaking about paul hill being there, but i didn’t know that there was another terrorist who had been there as well.
i literally just got a freezing chill up my spine.
i guess it was too much to hope for that he would have turned ware in because it was the right thing to do and not because he was ‘pressured”
i have no idea what pressuring means either, but i am so glad that they did it.

Actually, Rogie, no one has ever confirmed that Daniel Ware was at our event. I saw Paul Hill and at one point there were two other guys whose names I do not remember. But I dont know if Ware was there. We do know, however, that he made it to Pensacola then he went back. And, yes, I dont know what kind of “pressure” the feds exercised either but that is the word that others used since then….

I think I have said before…we were there to pay RESPECT to one of our own…nothing was going to take that away from us! Mother nature had delayed it…but…some “anti-choice terrorist” wasn’t going too!!
We were all use to being around “protesters”…but …at the time I couldn’t shake this really uneasy feeling…I thought perhaps it might just be because we were there…in a place were “our friend” was murdered!!
But it was Paul Hill…I just knew that he was NOT like all the protester’s we were “normally” exposed too…I felt that he was very dark!! Along with the Phil Donahue Show…there was NO question…in my mind that he would try to hurt or murder some of us!! It was obvious that he was a “ticking time bomb”…but NO one had a “crystal ball”…

And meanwhile I was having regular conversations with Hill. Then, as I’ve reported before, years later when Paul was on Death Row he told me that he had thought about wiping us all out but he “didn’t want to disrupt your event.”

What a great story! Don’t miss Pat Richard’s 3/18 post on the abortion.ws blog. True or not, and brief, it’s got all the elements — drama, intrigue, an informer, a gullible good guy, and especially questions, questions, questions – everything.
I’ve never heard of our almost hero, Daniel Ware, and googling him didn‘t answer much. And it’s hard to believe baby killers would be so stupid as to gather in one place (but wait a minute! What about Pat’s picture of them together in front of the Supreme Court!)
The story is instructive, though, even if fictitious: in this day and age if you are going to break one of the diabolic laws that protect baby killers, their instruments, their helpers, and the places where they kill, tell no one. This is not a guerrilla war, a small war; this is tiny. It’s you alone against them.

This story is entirely true, John. Why would I make this up? And, yes, some providers thought we were stupid but most of them felt they had to go to the spot. We did have I think two security people. And we didn’t know what to expect that day – hundreds of protestors or none? Ultimately, we had ONE protestor – Paul Hill. Before the event he walked around the perimeter yelling out stuff about executing “abortionists”. I even have him on film to this day chanting. But, when our event started Paul got very quiet. I remember giving my speech and watching Paul go back and forth, back and forth. And he never said a word…..
but, I”m sorry my friend, but all of this is true…

What is instructive could be Dunkle’s comment about a tiny war. It’s what he does every time he drives to the clinic with his purple pimpmobile and his trustee bull horn. Or, possibly, buried within his bit of fiction is the very real possibility that John Dunkle is telling everyone, under the guise of telling ‘no one,’ about an murderous event to come.

So “Dunkle”…the reason that you haven’t heard of this guy is because…he didn’t make a name for himself!!
That is the problem with you “pro-life terrorist:…you/they are the “rejects of society”…until they murder one of us…then and only then is when they get their name(s) in print!!
That’s when they become your hero…right “Dunkle”?!?!

You’re right, Lorraine, and that’s what makes this story so chilling. We were all there, there was a plan and fortunately it never came to fruition. What was really chilling to me, however, was I only learned about it much after our event, just sitting at a table with Susan Hill and others. I remember when the reporter mentioned it, my head started spinning, it was like an outer body experience. And Susan, who never got flustered, had a blank look on her face as well.

Pat, first allow me to say that you always write greats posts that is enjoyable to read!
NOW – i understand that we have the freedom of speech and each one of us can do whatever (or almost) we want to do so. But knowing that pro-lifers are assassins, and they do go in front of abortion clinics with the intention of assassinating a doctor or a nurse, because the BS they say that they are there to save lives doesn’t glue anymore, why nobody do anything to them? Why do they wait until something bad happens? I don’t get it!

I just came across this article while browsing an Internet search. I knew Daniel Ware. He was a beloved friend of mine, a true warrior, and a blessed saint. His passion to save children and his love of the Lord were evident in every facet of his being. If only….. Sigh.
