Methotrexate
Methotrexate abortions are another option for women seeking to terminate their pregnancies.
Since 1993, physicians have offered methotrexate abortions in combination with misoprostol to induce early abortions. Although no standardized protocol has been established, typically a woman receives an injection of methotrexate and about three to seven days later, the physician will give her misoprostol, either orally or vaginally. Generally, 60% of women will abort within 24 hours and 70-80% of women will abort within 3 weeks. Some will take longer and may need additional doses of misoprostol. However, studies have shown that oral methotrexate in pill form works as well as the injectable form for an early abortion.
Methotrexate abortions work by stopping the ongoing implantation process that occurs during the first several weeks after conception. It may also affect attachment of the embryo to the uterine wall. Misoprostol is the second drug used in this regimen which causes uterine contractions that expel the embryo.
By using methotrexate abortions, women can typically avoid the use of surgical instruments and anesthesia when terminating their pregnancies. Evidence-based alternatives have allowed home administration of misoprostol which may offer women more privacy. Other advantages are that it can be used to treat a pregnancy outside of the uterus (an ectopic pregnancy) and women who have used it report that it resembles a “natural miscarriage.” Methotrexate abortions are safe and ultimately as effective as other forms of medical abortion.

Hello Dr. Carter, I really need some advise and help. My wife took the methotrexate shot to terminate her pregnancy, but the shot the didnt work, even though she felt she had a miscarraige and bleed badly etc. She is now 13 weeks pregnant, and is thinking she wants to keep it, however I am being told that their could be major side effects, and an aminocentesis may show the damge to the reproductive cells that were suppoded to be terminated. Can you provide me any useful information to share with her in regards to the side effects, and the likelyhood of the side effects if she gave birth to this child after taking the shot.??
Respectfully,
Don

George,
My daughter is now 13 weeks pregnant and took the first dosage of Methotrexate at 6 or 7 weeks. We believed she miscarried because she lost a lot of blood and clots but is still pregnant. The doctor thinks she may have been carrying twins. We are very worried because she took 2 or 3 dosages of Methotrexate totaling probably 150 to 200 mg. (she weighs approx. 2oo pounds). She now wants to keep her baby but everything we read indicates high risk of the baby being deformed or having abnormalities. Do you have any statistics of how many healhthy babies have been born after a case like ours. She is due to have more tests but I have been told those tests may not show everything. Please help! We are desparate. She says she will have an abortion if the tests show there will be abnormalities.
Thanks!
Pam and a very concerned mom.

Amanda: you have to check at the individual clinics as the prices vary. Go to http://www.abortion.com and you will see a comprehensive listing of reputable (there are some bad ones) clinics in your state/city. Good luck!

Have you checked your HCG lelevs since the injection?? I had the same thing happen to me.. Had the shot on 11/13 and had to go back a week later to see if my lelevs dropped (they were at a 78 so after one week should be at least in the 30s) They should call me tomorrow with the results.. But HPTS detect the hormone when its above 5 I think, and they said it can take weeks to get back to 0 (depending on the number when you had the injection). Also, after the methotrexate your supposed to wait 3 months until trying again (some say diff, my doctor said to wait till the lelevs are back to 0 and till I go thru my next cycle, so after X-mas.. Good luck and get them lelevs checked! Sometimes they don’t go down enough and you need a second injection. But at 4-5 weeks its not likely. But bottom line it can take awhile for the hormone to get out of your system completely to not show up on a test!! Was this answer helpful?

I agree with those stats, E B. That’s why it’s questionable whetehr ectopics would be allowed to be treated at discovery, or whetehr doctors must wait until the mother’s life is clearly threatened by actual or impending rupture to be able to perform a treatment which will destroy the embryo as a side effect. To pull it back to your end-of-life analogy, doctors aren’t allowed to euthanize terminally ill patients, or remove them from a respirator until brain death has actually occurred. It’s crystal clear that ectopic pregnancy treatment, and women’s fertility and lives, would be seriously affected by Initiative 26.

My girlfriend had a methotrexate abortion.
She actually ended having a pregnancy in her tube, and she was cured, in cost almost nothing, and now we have two beautiful children.
Sadly she was Accutane when she got pregnant the first time.
The pill and the condom failed.

What is astonishing to me is that there are ProLifers on this site that think a tubal pregnancy should not be treated.
Where do get these people?
They are nuts, the tubal pregnancy could have killed my wife and I would never have had her or my kids now.

Firstly, I think the way this is written is mintnterpreiisg the idea. I cannot speak for YesOn26, I have no affiliation with them whatsoever, beyond agreeing with their viewpoint. A pregnancy is not ended to save a mother’s life. (Watch the wording here carefully). If in saving the mother’s life, harm comes to the unborn, that is unfortunate, but acceptable. Can you see the difference? It’s all in the intent within the phrase. The minutia involved in this article is muddying the waters of whether a person exists at the moment of conception. All the necessary DNA information is present, the only thing missing is time. Barring interference, the one cell will divide, becoming two, then four. Eventually a new human being will be born. Does the unborn have a right to be defined a person? I say yes! Is someone on a ventilator considered a non-person? No, therefore dependency is not a definition of personhood. Are the elderly endowed with more personhood than a one year old? Again no, so age is not a definition of personhood. Is someone more of a person because they live in Clinton as opposed to Tupelo? No, so location is not a definition of personhood. In the DNA of that single cell is the DNA that person will live with their entire life. Half of it comes from the egg, half from the sperm. But once the DNA forms to make the 26 chromosomes then all that remains is to wait. That cell deserves the chance to become a baby, be born, grow up, have a family, grow old, and pass away. Please vote Yes in 26.
